You could look up some battles on eyewitnesstohistory.com and actually get a good idea of how they wrote back then, and what it was really like to be in the situation.

 

 

 

I'm not sure what your instructor is expecting, but you might get extra credit for writing the journal sort of in-character to someone that would have actually lived in that time, using terms and speech that would have been heard during the Civil War.

...there has been more than one civil war. Im guessing you mean the American one though. I read a book about it once but i dont know any battles :?

Do Gettysburg, as has been said. I just finished a report on it myself, and there's a LOT of information out there, it's a cool battle, very famous, very big, very bloody, very important. I would just start by describing why it happened, then go straight into an account of the first day of battle - the Gettysburg Address might make a good intro.
