Bah another wireless question (problem)

Alright, I'll start off first with what I have.

LINKSYS WRT54G IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router

LINKSYS WUSB54G IEEE 802.11b/g USB 1.1/2.0 Wireless-G Adapter up to 54Mbps Data Rates WEP Encryption, WPA Security, CCX 2.0

Ever since I have had the two I have gotten random disconects out of no where. Usualy this is fine if it is simple browsing the internet but when I'm in the middle of a group in WoW or a match on CS:S it can get incredibly anoying.

I've never been able to really figure out why I will randomly drop/reconect. It isn't my PC specificly (all the PC's in our house will on random and it is at the same time. It's usualy only droped for few moments but sometimes we need to restart the router).

The first question is if I should bother with trying a 'different' brand. Both of these products suposidly got good reviews and the router is also compatable with my 360.

We are running on a WEP (I belive so) secured network so other people can not connect to us.

Is there anything I can try to stop the disconects?

Another question is about my 360. Currently I have it running through my PC 'sharing' its connection. However when I am on live I will randomly get a disconect in the middle of the game. Suposidly my adapter is not a 'supported' adapter with the 360 but does that really matter if its going through my PC to get to it? I'm thinking of just breaking down and buying the $90 xbox 360 wireless adapter unless I can find something cheaper to dedicate to it.

So thats pretty much my question(s), but the main one is does anyone have any idea how I can get a steady connection?

ps: to add to something 'odd' about it my sisters laptop obvoiusly doesn't have the same network adapter as we all do. She still gets random disconects. However I have tried getting internet from the neighbor next door and while it will work it will also sometimes get 'random disconects'. That however may just be becaus of a slightly lower signal strenght (4/5 bars while ours is 5/5)

Try a different channel for the router. There maybe somebody close to you that is using the same channel as you and causing interference.

Make sure you have the latest firmware and drivers for the router (and adapters).

Alright I'll try that when I get home :) .

Any idea how to switch a channel? I'm about to google it >_>.

You'll have to log into the router admin panel. Check the manual but it should be http://192.168.1.1

Alright I switched my channel, I'll update later about it :).

Trying out GRAW 2 on live to see if I get kicked atm.

Also checked and I have the latest firmware, at least for the router. If I still get problems I"ll check about the adapters too.

I had a similar problem but on a modem using Ethernet so after calling the company witch they said their connection was fine and i should get a new modem. So i got the new modem and it still didn't work so I decided to keep it rather than keep my 4 year old one with a piece of a metal chip rattling inside it and pay a 15% repackaging fee. Then I checked the line and hooked up the cable that was run to my tv, about 20 feet away in the neighboring room. After it was hooked it up to the computer for the next day I realized that it was because of the cable. I would suspect it was the squirrels since they have been known to chew on the power cables leading to the electric bird feeder.

Here are some other things you could try because it is most probable it is not my case:

-If you have a ups you could plug the router into it and see if that will help at all since I have herd of that causing routers to disconnect.

-Another think you could do is holding the reset button in for 30 seconds witch will change everything to its original settings, including passwords.

-Try removing the security of the wireless network too-Maybe demote your modem to a simple brige by

going to advanced settings (set to brige/PPPoE) and then do it for the router and give

it direct access to modem by providing login credentials after you save your settings it should be good and not cause miscommunication because of dynamic ip addresses.

Unless it's a complete power failure, this will not change anything. An UPS is nothing more than a backup battery.

This won't change anything. Random signal drops won't be caused by any settings you can change in the router.

------

Is your line constantly being used (torrents, large downloads, ect)? I have heard that the WRT54's can have issues if you have a lot of connections in and out (ex large torrents swarms). I have a WRT54GS v4 (4.70.6 firmware) and have *never* had it drop on me, even when I've maxed out my line. We also have that same wireless adapter plugged into my dad's tower upstairs and on the other side of the house with no issues.

Does is happen at all when you're plugged in with a cable?

If you are going to buy a new WRT54, buy the GL. They changed the firmware on the G and GS to some closed source software that has a lot of known issues. The GL (slightly more expensive) uses the opensource linux firmware (what my older GS currently runs with no issues).
