Tip.It is getting slow

Recommended Posts

I was looking up information on Alexa about Tip.It for another topic I was writing and as a hit the post new topic button, the page wouldn't load. I had to click the button multiple times to make it go to the new topic page. With my broadband connection which my computer says is 100.8 Mbps (Whatever that is, I just now it should be fast.) loading Tip.it shouldn't be a problem so when I found Tip.It on Alexa I looked at our speed rating and got this.

* Traffic Rank for tip.it: 3,564

* Speed: Slow (74% of sites are faster), Average Load Time: 3.7 Seconds

* Traffic Rank for forum.tip.it: 3,564

* Speed: Very Slow (96% of sites are faster), Average Load Time: 8.9 Seconds

EDIT: I now tested the site and forums on Web Page Load Timer (IE only) and got these results.

Done.

http://tip.it/

It took 5.11 seconds to load the page.

Done.

http://forum.tip.it/

It took 8.797 seconds to load the page.

So the site is slow and the forum is very slow. So what I propose is a day every six months or so the admins close the forum and the mods and admins clean up old threads, delete all locked topics and just clean up really, that way we can keep the forum and site faster and better. This day could also be used for forum upgrades and such to. What do you think? Any other suggestions to make us faster? Post them here.

The funny thing is , Alexa only measures traffic generated by users that are using the Alexa Toolbar when they browse the web.

Personally I see the toolbar itself as the problem. My browser contains none of those toolbars or unnecessary add ons and neither the forum or our website ever take more then a second to fully load.

even funnier that it took me over 5 seconds to load THAT site. :P

But, I used it anyways :P

http://tip.it/runescape

It took 1.453 seconds to load the page.

Done.

http://forum.tip.it/

It took 0.953 seconds to load the page

The funny thing is , all these tools are never going to be 100% accurate due to their own servers load. Your own personal route to the server you are trying to view, etc etc

All connections go through up to 30 different hubs (or servers if you like) when transferring data between the server and the user. Any one of those servers could have an extreme load and slow the results. Results will never be perfect but we get very little complaints about speed overall.

Trust me , I monitor statistics on our servers quite closely and make as many adjustments as possible when they can be found, but I cant fix every network router in the world to ensure that every ISP delivers its customers the best connection at all times :)

I do appreciate the feedback though, don't get me wrong , I'm not trying to knock your info , just adding that there are way too many factors that come into play when it comes to serving content to millions of users worldwide :)

You are right about that but, I continuation of this topic it would be nice to clean out the forums a little, the General P2P section has 135 pages its just getting a little crowded in here.

People like having the old threads there for reference sake. The biggest complaint about the "move" from ScapeBoard to our own server, away from DK3, was that we didn't get to keep the database with thousands of old threads and references.

The Staff prune the boards that people don't really care about in regards to nostalgia. The rest are left with their histories so people can look up old threads. I see the archives as more of a positive thing than a negative - and if they were really that draining on the server and its bandwith, then they wouldn't be there now.

You have a good point Sith but I would like to see the mods taking more action against spammy topic and just not locking them and sending them to the archive.

What more action can they take other than locking. The mods lock a thread, tell the user what they did wrong, leave it up for a few days, then it either gets moved to an archive by a mod or pruned automatically. Most people don't go to the end of forums to look at locked topics.

What do you want the mods to do?

And you can honestly say that all the topics in the archive are useful and are not spam like this topic on page 135,

With my broadband connection which my computer says is 100.8 Mbps (Whatever that is, I just now it should be fast.)

You shouldn't be using something as evidence if you don't know what you're talking about. That 100Mbps is your LAN speed, not your true download speed. Test it using speedtest.net and you'll see.

It's much easier to just leave them there instead of spending thousands of hours pruning them by hand while trying to leave the topics people may actually want to read again.

You're complaining about something just to be complaining from the looks of it. You're trusting sources that are known to be shady (or random unproven ones) to make your point and you are the only one complaining about this. Tip.It is constantly being bombared by users and if it truely was slow loading and it was Tip.It's problem, there would be tons of people complaining about it, not just one.
