First ever vector. P¤¤ auki - an opened head. *Updated*

I made this image for my big brother's weblog. The blog's name is "pÃÆÃâÃâäÃÆÃâÃâä auki" which in Enlish means something like "open head". It's a pun and one that can't be translated nor easily explained. Anyway. He wanted me to design a banner for it. Containing a person with an open head. Trivial. The banner isn't done yet, but the head is.

Before some smart [wagon] *cough* keiph *cough* comes and says it's not a real vector I'll say it myself. It's done in full with the pencil tool in PS but not using vectormasks etc. (the shading is done with filled paths) and the veins in brains are made with stroked pencil paths. Not other tools though.

Now for the official part. "I was pretty bored so I thought I'd give vector a go and please remember it's my first try ever. Rate 0/10!!".

For real, give a comment. I know the shading isn't done per any real light source, it's done purely based on feeling. Oh...It is not traced!! It's mainly based on a mirror I have next to my computer (so it looks a bit like me!!)

New fixed version on the right. Chin, left side forehead. hmm.. I first made the skin tone much darker, so the highlights were much more recognisable. Fixing them later.

Wow that's really good for your first, nice shape and simplistic shading really makes it look good.

Not sure about the green skin color :P .. The front of the face looks kinda wierd.. looks like someone cut off his chin and the ear looks like its facing us..

But that is really good, I love the shape and texture of the brain and face, look forward to seeing more of these :) .

Lowgravity, I want to be just like you. But...I never will be as 1337 as you. :(

Green? It's not green on my display...ow crappy. I hate overly green monitors, so I calibrated mine perhaps a lil too "not green". Going to fix it later. Yeh, now that you said the chin looks a bit cut off. Gotta work on it too. The ear, however, is the way my ear looks. I don't know what the word is in English, but I have ears that are tilted outwards a bit more than normally. I think the only problems with it are that it's placed too high and that it has a little too much detail compared to simplistic face.

Yeah updated version is looking really cool, the face looks more like a face and your highlights looks really good.

Only problem I see with it now is the rim around the brain doesn't really look even in width all the way round, really good work man keep it up :) .

Interesting... I was just commissioned to do an animated spot for a film production group... "Outside the Box."

They wanted a brain like that popping out of a box. My first hour of research turned up absolutely nothing as far as a good brain reference. Maybe I can contract you to draw the brain for me. More info later. Good work, I like the illustration.

Very nice, just out of curiosity, did you trace or use a reference pic? Or did you freehand it?

Also, which program did you use? Is this your first time working with the vector interface? It looks like you've had at least some practice with it before..

I wouldn't think any less of it no matter what your answers to those questions are, I'm just curious.. :)

so easy to answer.

It looks quite good for your first try at it. But for me to appreciate it more, can someone please answer me;

What is a vector? And what does it have to involve to be a vector?

Googles response!

"Vector art is art calculated and drawn using vectors and curves in your computer and printer, instead of by bitmapping. Illustrator and FreeHand are popular vector art programs. Vector art is great for type since the lines stay crisp at any scale. There are no resolution problems with dots or pixels. Type and lines remain crisp not bitmapped."

Basically, a vector is something that doesn't lose any quality no matter what size you make it.

Thanks for comments guys. GSW, the job was made freehand as said and it can perhaps best be seen with the ear. It is too high in relation to the eyes. For the brains I looked at a few shots from google to get idea how the veins are placed. Then I just filled her up with them.

I must admit I couldn't draw a face without the mirror reference. It actually turned out a bit off the original pose of my head. It's more from the side than intended.

Well, this was actually the second time I used the pen tool. The first was the road in the holden signature....a single shape.
