Locke
If the wholesaler charges more than a local shop does then the shops are making a loss. Thats an absurd claim. How is the local shop making a loss? Let me explain how this system works: - Wholesaler sells textbook to the University textbook store for $150. - The university textbook store sells it back for $187 (25% markup). - The university textbook store, at the end of the semester, will only pay $10 for the used back, so a new store opens which will buy the book back for $20. - My friend buys that book for $40, then sells it to a student for $80, because the used textbooks store isn't very common. - The University textbook store will sell it's used books for around $115. - Therefore, the person buying from the used bookstore and selling to students is making profit while selling the book for less than the wholeseller sells them for. No, I don't know why the market works like this - but is does. You can't assume you know how every system works.
Zonorhc
Well, then it's a question of semantics. You never said that he was buying them from a second-hand bookstore. Locke
Well, then it's a question of semantics. You never said that he was buying them from a second-hand bookstore. You're right, and that's my fault for not being clear - except that I did specify that the books were being sold back, for profit, for cheaper than the distributor sold them for. So even without specifying that it was second-hand, you still should have been able to understand my point.
Solidus_77
Weeds good to "Merchant", buy it real cheap, sell it for double ;) or grow it, if you have good farming Also, it's quite clear merchanting is the service of finding a buyer for the person. About the profit margins, well it really depends on a lot of factors, especially about where you buy it. For example, I'll be giving this a try at a flee market where the goal of most people is just to get rid of the stuff. With a bit of haggling I'm sure i can find good deals for second hand items way lower than any shop could offer, thus increasing the profit margins. monkeypie10
Thats my Uncle's entire business. It's made him a multi millionaire too. He buys and sells computer hardware and software to make profit. I've been to his warehouse and I saw thousands of monitors and stuff. I even saw what he said to be 7 million pencils :o/
Viktorkrum77
My aunt and uncle buy direct items from wholesalers, and not in bulk either, then resell online, mostly ebay and such. But it's a great money maker. Take an iPod Nano for example (prices are not exact but very close): Retail prince= $150 USD Bulk price= $75 USD Single Wholesale Price= $85 USD And sometimes even as low as the bulk price. So, it's a huge money maker. Me doing staff.

FuBai
Weeds good to "Merchant", buy it real cheap, sell it for double ;) I've done that. It's better to grow it though. Then go to a local street corner and sell. Know a couple of people in that buisness - well more into the the pills side of things - ecstacy, morphine, 2cb, ketamine etc. They are minted. It's just too illegal and risky for me - an unregulated black market with varying purity and nutters who will beat you up to try and get thier next fix. Though completely unrelated that reminds me of how I knew someone at my school who knew someone who smuggled drugs from Columbia and Peru. I have since found it quite amusing, no idea why, because it's not amusing. :-k Me doing staff.
