My Grandfather was part of the Kokoda Trail history. He was on it in World War 2 (though his job I'm not quite sure of - but would of been a soldier obviously). He survived though he passed away 17 Years ago. I never met my Grandfather. :(

warri0r45
My great grandad fought at Gallipoli and France. He was a sniper and luckily survived the whole ordeal. He's dead now though. Personally I think war is the sadest thing ever and I thank my lucky stars on days like these that, through others sacrafices, I'm able to be free and live in a very liberal, proud, and for the most part friendly nation. Lest we forget so god help us we never make these mistakes again. On a sidenote, anyone here seen the movie 'Gallipoli'? The one with Mel Gibson. It's pure genious and I highly reccomend it. It culminates in one of the bloodiest battles of the Gallipoli campaign - 'The Nek' It was a stuff up and watching it in the movie and hearing real stories about ANZACS saying 'farewell cobber' as they knew they were going to be slaughtered by the Turks is very sad indeed. I mean tearjerker material.
jemathonical
I watched Gallipoli last year some time. I don't really remember the whole thing but remember the final shot of the film. Isn't it like one of the best aussie movies ever made? ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it!
Iamdan
The thing that bugs me about this is the forced ANZAC ceremonies at schools. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for those guys, but a lot of kids don't. Making them stand in the sun for an hour won't make them have any more respect than they already do. I think the schools should still pay their respects and make it voluntary, but focus more on educating students about the ANZAC's, rather than make them detest the whole idea because they have to stand in the sun for an hour involuntarily. If those kids had a better idea of what the war was like, they would have more respect for those who suffered it.

king_kenny69
I went to the dawn service this morning wearing my grandfather and great-grandfather's medals. I've been attending the dawn service as long as I can remember, and each year more people are attending, which is great. My Last.Fm

It depends where you go, i reckon a good 80% of my 1500 student school would go. There would be the people who would see it as'cool' not to go though, and others would follow suit. I think that unless you are very ignorant you can see the connection between the diggers and us, and the amzing sacrafices that they made to protect our country. I went to the dawn service in Sydney today, it was very moving. It was raining pretty much the whole time, but there were thousands and thousands of people there, which just shows you that people do realise what the diggers did and want to honour them. jemathonical
I think as people get older they realise the importance of ANZAC Day. I went to my towns dawn service too. It's just awesome seeing how many people went. Theres a poll on http://www.ninemsn.com.au asking if you think ANZAC Day is the most important day on the Australian Calendar. warri0r45
I really dont care about the history, only care about the day off school. Then you really need to pull your head in and show some respect. I'll go with that sentiment. To DOOMY - Whether you know it or not, out attitude of fighting against axis powers gave our country character and aided in our freedom. You can either take it as a day off and shun the people who died in the name of keeping that privalege or rather at least be thankful and respectful. Liberty is a privalege, not a right. People died in the name of keeping that privalege alive for all Australians (and New Zealanders, to be technically correct :P ).

I agree with everyone, we should all know about the day and respect it. I don't think you should have insulted him, though (that's if he sincerely is ignorant to the day and the meaning of it). remoteman
If i remember correctly the casualties were 87,000 turks and 8700 Aussies, 2500 Kiwis, coincidental numbers. Not to mention the British, French, and New Zealanders who died aswell. But it's not the casualties, but rather the extrodinary bravery that they showed in the face of defeat, the mateship and comradery that should be remembered, and makes us who we are today. So...I made a mistake and sounded like a jerk...I'm not having a good day...Trust me. And the spelling....I posted that in a rush (and this thread isn't about spelling, so lay off it.), and if you want to know...I'm allowed an opinion, and i should be allowed to express whatever views I have. I respect the Australians and New Zealanders who fought, but that war wasn't good for my family, I almost feel like i'm celebrating the deaths of my ancestors. Also...Calling me a [bleep], shows your not too mature either. =; So lay off it, i apologised. Doomy edit: I like sheep
