I was thinking that it could use some random rock tiles that are not all the same(like the grass). You could also have something special like ropes to climb or have a set that would be walkable but you couldn't see your character all or some to make a tunnel. Maybe even those trampolines or different terrain such as fire,ice or veggie.

would you mind asking your bro what program he is gonna use to make the game? cause i only know flash to make simple games but for this one it would need a better program designed exclusively for making games
