growing tomatoes - should i pay farmer?

Featured Replies

I plan to grow tomatoes. I will use supercompost and plant flowers to prevent crops from disease. Is this enough protection or should i pay farmer to take care of my crops?

Well, i pay a farmer for everything even tho i use supercompost. I've found that the flowers always grow before my regular plant, which then leaves my tomatoes (or other item) open to getting diseased.

I think the flowers are pointless anyway.

just my opinion tho.

Actually the full grown flowers in there protects the plants, not just growing them at the same time.

But to the original question, in my opinion, if you have what the farmer wants without too much effort to gather, then pay them. If you're going to spend more time gathering the payment than growing the tomatoes, not really worth the bother.

If Jagex ever made a perfect update, there would be players complaining about nothing to complain about.

Once the flowers are fully grown, you'll have all the protection you can. However, keep using supercompost to increase your yield and you exp.

Here is my advice whatever your crops are:

Plant your flowers, water them and watch them for about 15 minutes until they are fully grown. Do not pick up your flowers, use them over and over again to protect your other crops (it may sound like less xp but it worth it on the long run). Plant your corresponding allotment seeds nearby (use super compost for a much better yield) and go train your other skills at ease while they are growing safely. :-w

If you prefer to plant limps instead of the other lower level flowers, always pay the gardener to watch your crops! :ohnoes:

At a higher level you will find yourself planting tomatoes only when you are running short of better seeds. In my opinion, and unless you take my advice and plant your flowers only once, it's not really worthy to wait for your marigolds to be fully grown before to plant your tomatoes. Tomato seeds are very common and easy to get from thieving the Master Farmer. ;)

Since there is no flower to protect your strawberries and you don't want to loose those expensive seeds, I would advise you to always pay one basket of cooking apples to the gardener to watch after them (get them from your own apple trees, from the cooking guild or from the culinaromancer chest).

Sweetcorn is very easy to protect with a scarecrow (no waiting time) and is used to make the best food one can get = the awesome corn & tuna baked potatoes (healing as much as Manta Ray in one bite). :D

As they give great xp and are the most expensive of all the allotment seeds, always protect your watermelons with grown up nasturiums.

I sincerely hope this will help.

I always pay the farmer to watch my sweetcorn.

Jute seeds are dirt common, and the little exp I get when I farm them adds up in the long run. There are 2 easily accessible hops patches near places I frequently vistit: north/west of Seers and in Yanille. You only need 10 jutes per patch, so farming all kinds of things helps a lot!

Being self-sufficient, I steal all my seeds or get them from monster drops. This means I'm always low on seeds > tomatoes. In the time I fill my patches with tomatoes, I make sure I replenish my batch of jute fibres.

Only pay farmers for trees or allotments that you can't use flowers on (strawberries for me). Between supercompost, flowers, and the low cost of tomato seeds, I wouldn't waste my time paying the farmer.

I agree with lostdreamer3. While Zou Lou's advice is good, I prefer to pay the farmer to look after everything. I don't have the patience to stand around watching plants grow for 15 minutes, or even 5 minutes. I just plant the seeds (and always use super compost to increase yields) and pay the farmer to look after them. Why waste the time (and seeds) planting them if you can't guarantee the xp from checking/picking them??? Paying the farmer guarantees your crop - so no risk, and no waste! :D

For low to medium level farmers there are very few items that you get from farming that are much use to use in general, or are much value to sell (herbs are the exception of course). Therefore, bank all the flowers, fruit and vegetables etc you farm and use them later on to pay the farmer to look after your higher level crops. Make sense?

This is just my opinion, 'cos I can't stand to waste time and seeds with dead crops. I hope this helps.

I never pay the farmer, just use super compost. Sure I get dead crops, but IMO it isn't worth paying the farmer

Why isn't it worth paying the farmer? What else are you going to do with the fruit and veg you collect?

Because sometimes collecting the payment takes too long as compared to the cost of, say, tomato seeds. Tomato seeds and lower are easily obtained, thus cheap, and gathering the sack of cabbages...well I just cannot be botherd to do that. Tomatoes I keep in my bank, lower then tomatoes I never plant.

As stated before, I always pay the farmer for sweetcorn, strawberries and watermelons, as well as all trees I plant. I cannot be bothered to pay for hops, or bushes lower then whiteberries. Jangerberry seeds are quite common as well, below that people want to pay YOU just to get rid of them.

I must be one of those weird ones. I don't pay the farmer to check after my crops for me. I do everything myself.

I farm in Catherby, that way I can easily train something else while my crops are growing. Usually, I fish/cook swordies. I will get an entire inventory of swordies, cook them, deposit in bank, check on crops. Lather, rinse, repeat.

It seems tedious, but it's a good way to 1)train multiple skills at once, 2) replenish my food for combat, 3) get a little bit more money in my bank (I sell all produce to the store next to the allotment).

I'm a married mother that plays RuneScape. Got a problem with that?

I sometimes do that as well, especially in Catherby when I grow tomatoes, because I don't pay for them!

The cycle you are describing works great. Sadly, I grow bored with fishing fast, so I end up leaving after all.....

Same here, I usually train the farm/fish/cook only until I make a level in farm, or I've been playing for over 4 hours straight (sore bum from sitting all day), then I go and train something else. It's not power lvling, but it works.
