Internet speed / time - relation

I have noticed recently that my internet speed seems to be incredibly fast on weekday mornings, then on evenings it is about 1/4 of the speed that it was in the morning. And on a weekend during the day it gets really really slow. It is lightning fast in the middle of the night however.

Is there anything i can do about this? or is it my ISPs problem?

Thats because thats when more people are using the internet(during business hours, etc.) the slower it will go. The only way to solve it is to get a broadband internet provider that is known to have good speed in your area.

Sounds like your connection gets shared when mroe people are on. You should be able to fix this by switching to a different ISP or I would suggest doing any downloads in the morning.

Where do you live? Like, are you in your own house / parrents house or a dorm room?

Its probaly due to the ammount of traffic you get during certain parts of the day. I know when I lived in my dorm it was speed up during the night when not as many were on.

I share a wireless connection betweeen 4 devices in my house, but it doesnt seem to affect the speed if more than one is on at a time. I think its my ISP, but i've never had this problem with them before...

Unless one of my neighbours has switched to the same ISP as us now... That might be it.. That would be incredibly annoying.

You can safely bet money that it's your ISP if it a regular occurrence during different times of day. It also won't be just your neighbors causing the problem. It will be the entire surrounding neighborhood saturating the lines during the times you experience slow downs. Rather hard for one person to saturate the line for an entire neighborhood. :P

Is your ISP cable or DSL? I've heard somewhere DSL is a more shared line so it will slow up when a lot are on at once.

It's deffinitly your ISP though.

Getting a business connection will generally alleviate this as they normally have lower contention ratios. 20:1 compared to the normal 50:1 on UK lines at least.

Funny, I've always heard that cable is the one that slows down when many are on...

I've never really had my DSL line slow down any, no matter what time of day I'm on

Yeah honestly I'm not sure which it is. However I was fairly certain it was DSL (I run cable and never slow down).

It might just be a lie and not be either, lol.

It might be possible someone is using your wireless internet connection :P

Is that wireless network secured? (Mac filters, password, ... )

Cable gets slow based on number of users sharing it

DSL gets slower as you get further and further from the main server.

It is most likely your ISP. You could always call up and complain. I had 6 friends that lived within 4 blocks of each other - every night around 8:00 they would randomly lag a ton, which was bad for them considering they usually scheduled their matchs for an online league around 8 or 9. Eventually they complained enough that the ISP fixed the issue, and now everybodies happy :D
