Ok, well i have gotten numerous pm's and questions on msn asking 'How do you make those sigs?' Well this guide is just to get you started.

First things first. System requirements must be Photoshop 7 (I don't know what the older versions have and don't have...) or above (CS Professional/Unlimited).

-----------------------------------------

Now to begin. I am starting very very elementary, but its to get things set.

Step 1: Open up photoshop and select File-New. It should come up with a screen like the one below. Put in the settings as shown, and click ok.

----------

Step 2: First, you should have one layer in the layers panel. Make sure that your colors are set at default (press 'D' if not--they should be black in the foreground and white in the background). HOlding down CTRL, hit backspace. This should fill the layer with white.

Next, create a new layer by clicking the icon in the red box. If you do not see the layers panel, go to Windows-Layers.

----------

Step 3: Begin drawing the outline of what you want drawn. In the tools box, right click on the paintbrush icon and select the one that looks like a pencil. Make sure that your foreground color is set to black. To do this quickly hit 'D.' Also, right click in the area that you will be drawing, and drag the arrow on the brush size bar to 1 pixel. For my outline, i stuck my hand on my monitor and drew around my hand.

----------

Step 4: Alright, so you now have an outline for what you want in your signature. Now, go to the tools palette, and select the paint bucket. If you cannot see it, look for a rectangle with a gradient in it, and right click this and choose the paint bucket.

STOP! Before you start filling in your outline, go to the top of the screen, under the drop down menus, and find a box that says 'Anti-Aliased.' (circled in red). Make sure that this is unchecked otherwise your fill will be all faded at the edges and it looks weird.

----------

Step 5: After you have filled in all that you want, go back to the tools pallete and select the icon that looks like a right hand drawing. It is located underneath the paint bucket. This is the burn tool. THis will allow you to shade your sig very smoothly. At the top of the window, there is a small option that says 'Exposure.' Choose how intense you want the shadow to be. Once you are ready, begin shading the sig. However, if you have a main light source, such as a rising sun, moon, explosion, etc., take in mind that you need to only shade what you need to. You do not want to have everything shaded darkly when there clearly is a main light source.

step51ti.gif

----------

Step 6: Ok, so basically you're done now. Obviously mine doesnt look all that great, but hey, not much you can do with a hand...

step60dw.gif

----------

Step 7: Add a background and details, and you're done! Congratulations on succesfully making your very first BRUSHED SIGNATURE!

----------

Well i hope this helped everyone. ANd pardon the crappy looking shading on the hand. For some reason my computer doesn't take very good screenshots. It looked fine in photoshop.

There are a few issues with the tutorial. First of all, if you are using PS do take advantage of it. Never do anything on one layer. The fill should be made on it's own layer just in case and most importantly: the burn tool is destructive, there is noway to remove it easily. The burn tool also gives you wrong colour of shadow IMO if used alone. I usually make a color burn layer and a linear burn layer. Then brush on both to get the best result. You also forgot highlights. Add a Linear dodge layer (all the layers should have less than 50% fill opacity to function properly).

That was the method I shaded the WIP Lordi signature for Azvareth. Here's a scaled down version of an old stage report. The whole face has one base colour with the layers i mentioned above.

Are you sure this should be a "Burn" tutorial, I thought "Brushing" was done with the Brush tool...

i agree, i find the burn tool not to shabby for brushing i prefer using a airbrush rather then a burn and dodge tool so i will call it photoshop art..

like Col. Avanor said take more advantage of the program, btw just save it as a image will look better then screenshot.. and you missed some details in the outline of the hand but thats not a big deal, nice tutorial however
