Locking bumped topics

Recommended Posts

Ok, I never understood this. Here's my two cents. Instead of locking a good thread that was pointlessly bumped, why doesn't a mod post that there was no reason to bump this, and instead of locking it, just let it fall back down. Some of these locked threads are worthwhile, and when it comes to when we really need to save them from flying off into cyberspace, we won't be able to, because they will have been locked.

This idea of locking good bumped threads just makes absolutely no sense. :?

Technically, threads are not supposed to be locked if they are bumped with a good reason - if they are bumped just for spam, then they are locked. I think a good idea/replacement would be to just split the reply that was spam and let the thread go back down to where it was. That way, nothing is ever locked.

Good idea??

I think it's reasonable. I dislike it when some mods are as an ex mod said "lock-happy".

Brilliant idea. :)

Can this be made note of then?

All set and done. The rules do not necessarily reflect moderator policy but rather what to do/not do, so I didn't update them. The moderator team, however, is aware of the new changes in procedure. :D Thanks for the suggestion, Viktor.

I really like The Siths idea of splitting off the uneccesary bump.

Well why this thread is here I might just say something. Why is it that if you make a post that has already been done before the mods tell you to use the search button. You think ok, I've used the search button and found it now I'm going to add my two cents, oh its been locked for bumping old topics.

Cruel circle anyone?

Definitely a new perspective, nice find. Maybe instead of posting directly in a bumped post, we use the word "bump" and a short reason why, like an explanation, that should solve this problem.

I don't quite understand what you mean by this. We moderators never locked topics unless someone bumped it for no reason. For example, if someone posted something like, "lol" on a 2 year old thread, then it would get locked. If you had contributed to the topic, it shouldn't have been locked.

Either way, the policy has now been changed so bumped topics will no longer be locked. If it was a pointless bump (like "lol," ":D," "cool"), then that post will simply be removed. If the 'bump' contributed to the thread, then it will remain unlocked and the post will stay.

I still thinks its a cruel circle, you could argue by bumping an old topic you are restarting an old good topic which is benefiting the forum if anything. It would also prevent people from continually posting the same topics, bumping should be encouraged, not just left as Viktorkrum said but positively bumped by the mod that locked the said repeated topic.
