Nacs16
I'm going to buy a new computer. All the ones im interested in operate under windows Vista. I have heard that there are still lots of kinks in Vista and I'm not sure if I should buy it or not. Should I wait a while for it to get sorted out or buy it now? Brandon_7
Well if you really want the computer, just buy it. Yes, Vista does have quite a few bugs. However, it's constantly being improved. You could wait a while if you want, but if you're waiting for quite a few of Vista's bug to be worked out, you could be waiting a year.
blade995
To add to the above post: If your buying a pre-built computer there "should" be less bugs than a normal pc that upgraded to Vista. The reason for this is that the OEMs that build the computer choose hardware that is garenteed to work with Vista (or atleast not have any problems), other than having a hit or miss when somebody upgrades. One thing you should do first is any program you can not live without google it and make sure it will run on Vista.
binarypi0110
Personally I would, when I get the computer, wipe the hard drive and install WinXP professional SP2. Vista is basically XP with eye candy, but takes up a lot more resources and is also buggy. Also, some computers "certified for vista" might be only for the "Home Basic" edition, which is basically the same as xp, but with the bugs. Or, if you prefer, take a look at Xandros 4 OCE or Ubuntu/Kubuntu 7.04. Excellent introductory Linux OS's. You might never want to go back to Windows. -binarypi0110
ooberman
I've had vista since it was released and have had no problems with stability. All the problems I have had have been with software and theres not really a lot you can do if it doesn't work, so if you do get it now do what blade995 said and google the software you can't live without to be sure. Also make sure you don't have on board graphics, and it has at least 1gb of ram. And don't bother if it's home basic. oober edit* if your feeling really adventurous, you could take binarypi0110's advice and try a linux distro. It is quite daunting moving to a new os and thats why there are live os disks so you can try before you fully install.

mastermule52
My first instinct says "nooo don't do it" But, I will say the average user's experience isn't that bad on Vista. Yes there are a lot of bugs, but there are in Windows XP as well (and for that matter, ANY operating system.) However, most of the bugs will only be found by a few people. Of course, those few people will say "I found a bug that gave me a really hard time!!" and they'll be upset about it, but the chances of running to too many major problems are rather low. Besides - cool people only need Java and a web browser (h) (oh and mIRC) The refuge that you built to flee that places that you've come to fear the most ... is the place that you have come to fear the most.Operator - http://www.heartunit.orgCouncil - http://z8.invisionfree.com/skillazModerator - http://forum.meebo.com

dsavi
People are making a big deal about this. Vista is not as buggy as you might think- of course there are some, only one is dangerous, but it's actually not that bad. I have two computers with WVHP. (Windows Vista Home Premium, if it wasn't obvious.) Oh yeah, that bug. DON'T change the power settings, it crashes the computer every five minutes. The Observer
It is better to get it now because you can download updates periodically from Microsoft which will fix those bugs. And service packs too will be released and can be downloaded for free.
Cruiser
Oh yeah, that bug. DON'T change the power settings, it crashes the computer every five minutes. This is not true. I played with all kinds of power settings on our Core2 laptop before reinstalling XP and the only issues I had was waking from standby when the lid was closed. Yes the power management is buggy, but not to the point of crashing everything every 5 minutes.

Yes it is true, I have a very decent computer (core 2 duo, 2 gb ram, 256 graphics ram) and it seriously did that. Annoyed the living daylights out of me and it was really lucky I didn't need to save anything. I remembered that my dad had changed the power settings, so I changed it back and it never happened again. Still hasn't.

This happening to your machine does not make it a fact that it will always crash on every machine. This just shows it is a problem with drivers and your specific hardware configuration, not every machine running Vista. Just because something breaks on one machine, doesn't mean it breaks on all of them.
