Runescape: Paper Dolls For The 21st Century

Featured Replies

This thought occurred to me some time ago while playing the game and people were discussing their character's garb. I just read the Yin-Yang Amulet thread, and observing that it has no effect other than looks, the paper dolls concept came to mind again.

For those too young to know what paper dolls are:

Interestingly, in my wikipedia search I discovered that the term is actually used to describe this style of inventory management in role-playing video games:

... makes perfect sense.

I think this is a huge part of the appeal of runescape and similar games, it is a classic toy that stands the test of time.

I tend to not bother wearing things in Runescape that serve no purpose, but still like to have at least some sense of style in what my character wears.

So when it comes right down to it, we're all playing with dolls!

Another Westerner, ignorant of the yin-yang symbol. It represents balance,my good friend. That's why Kung-fu geeks have them.

Your amulet has no bonus because it is a copy.

The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".

Amen, brother

Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)

amen Bruder! (german ftw)

I'm invulnerable to everything, except Lenin and Dragoonson.

That's impossible.

I love people.[/hide]

I'm sorry, but I can't help but notice that the example for a paper doll appears to be female, yet is wearing no top....

What the yin-yang represents is completely beside the point. The point is, it's only there for looks. :shame:

Anyway, yes, I've noticed there is something of a similarity between Runescape characters and paper dolls. Or dolls in general.

Just look at all the Random event and Treasure Trail clothing.

I know exactly what the yin-yang symbol means. I was doing I-Ching readings for people at the age of 11, using either coins or stalks. (24 years ago).

I have a number of friends in the Taiwanese community in my locality and I get along with them better than most westerners, they recognize my work ethic and selflessness and are equally disgusted by western culture as I. I often shock them by understanding what they are saying even though I only speak english. Words are only a small part of human communication.

Please refrain from making such rude assumptions about people, thank you.

I do not have the amulet in game, nor am I interested in it, as it has no function. The only way it relates to this post is the paper-dolls phenomenon.
