How's about we check out one of my pencil drawings? I did this about a month or two ago, and now I wanna know what you guys and gals think of my drawing skills. I know he may be a bit out of proportion, but that's how I wanted it.

Hmmm I quite like it.

I do find it strange though, that the lines of his head are much thinner than the lines of the rest of his body. Also, maybe shade him?

Overall, I think it's quite nice.

Hehehe.. right. Not a buff zombie trying to look gangsta'. He's just big and bad.. and.. tough. And his pants are too big. What can I say?

And no, he doesn't have an invisible corset. It just makes his upper body look tremendously larger.

Thanks. This one's not really going for the anatomy, rather the very over-exaggerated look of big and buff. You all know what I mean.

If you are going to exagerate someones muscles it'd make more sense to research and find out which are which, make sure you understand their whereabouts. From then exagerate from what you know.

I think its just rediculus to say you weren't trying to get the anatomy right, just an over-exagerated look. It sounds more like an easy thing to fall back onto, as in it's just so easy to just say you werent going for anatomy but it just leaves me thinking.. "this guy just doesn't know how to draw anatomy correctly, so will only produce work with 'exagerated features' and show no connection to any knowledge of the human body atall."

But I do understand with a cartoon it doesn't need to be anatomically perfect, I just feel it's better to be able know how to draw something before going off and trying to push the boundaries, exagerate features etc.

For example, the head really doesn't look right, doesn't seem to belong to the body. His pecks seem far too vertically stretched, if I were to exagerate that I certainly wouldn't just stretch it like that, the right one looks asif its sagging.

The arm on the right doesn't look to muscley in comparisant the one on the left of the screen looks far better due to a better understanding of where the muscles in your arm is.

Heres how I'd atempt this, exagerating from what I know. very rough.

You're right, I don't know that much about anatomy. But I do know enough that I can make a basic person, nothing too detailed on the muscles or whatnot. Lemme draw you another one and see what you think of something that's more recent.

Look, Gilformen, if you don't have anything constructive to say, then don't bother posting. It's nice to know that you like terley's sketch better, but why do you like it better? What's better in his than in mine? Tell me that instead of "I like his better.."

*EDIT* How's about this?

Not so thin in the waist. Head actually fits. Got some legs as well.. Pecs aren't as stretched either. Something looks funny about the arms, but I can't quite figure it out. What do you think?

demonslayer2.png

Retired Tip.It Mod || Admin and Founder of Caesar 3 Mod Squad! All are welcome!

I do think its an improvement, but the head position still seems just too uncomfortable.. And maybe slightly too small, his right arm is too far over imo too.. Ive tried to head this in the right direction to show you how I mean. the changes are minor but I feel gives it more sense. Hope this edit helps.

also, there was a slight balance issue.

thats unfair Gilformen, dont post unless you have something valid to say.

Heh. Your rendition of it looks better. You're right.. I knew something looked wrong with the arm. And the head looks better sitting up like that. Thanks for all the help, terley!

His arms are to small

tifsbti6oi.gif

Looks like you are lumping muscle groups together. The arm muscles specifically needed more defining. I added a quick sketch on to your and Terleys drawings showing what I mean. I think this is happening in the legs aswell...

ok, sorry, i wasnt trying to be uber negative, its just that you seem to want to draw well, but without putting much time into knowing how to draw it better than just guessing where certain muscles are...sure that isnt everything but just your style, the awkward stance and the anatomy do not work.

like i said, not trying to be too negative, its better than some ive seen, but if you want to be good, practice more.

Heh.. thanks for being nice. I'll take some more time to learn anatomy then; then I'll get back to the forums with something better.

bullet pointers:

- the chest muscles stretch down way to far, bring them up

- judging by the angle you should be able to see some of the side, not just the chest muscle stretched across

- stomach muscles should be alot wider, and shouldnt be that shape, more curved squares

- never put thumbs inside your fingers, if you punch you could break your thumb...

im the first to admit this sucks, and is probably the sucky-est example in this topic, but it highlights some of my points, and just for general guidance. i drew over your original, but erased it.

Thanks all for your help so far. I'm working on it, and I think I've gotten a bit better. Just a tad, seeing as I haven't had much time to practice. But here's one I've got that I drew after I finished my Algebra II exam today. I had to fold it up to put it in my pocket, hence the creases in it. I need to work on more poses and how to correctly do them, hence the crouching guy in the corner. That's the one that I would like comments on the most.

I think it's much easier to take what you know initially and break it down in to understandable parts, don't make it complicated for yourself because human anatomy is very complicated.. You can only expect yourself to take it a step at a time.. This is very useful I'd say, disney tend to think of their characters as overall shapes to simplify stances. It may help you to become more comfortable with your characters.

I think you need to be much looser, and try and get to grips with body structures before you dive straight into detailing. You're definately improving but I personally have found it better breaking it down for myself into shapes.. you need to consider whether your character would be stood in balance, is the stance too stiff?, is the perspective working etc. Its best thinking ahead.

keep it up, obviously I don't expect a marraculus change into a proffessional straight away, and you shouldn't expect that either, just make it fun for yourself dude, learn from your mistakes and keep pushing yourself and trying different things constantly. your making great progress.

Thanks. Glad you've got patience enough to help me out! I'm working on it, getting better I hope. In the meantime, I made this little sig.. I spent about 30 minutes on it, and I think it looks good. But I know for a fact there's things I can improve on. I've been working on feathering and whatnot. Give it a looksie!
