I have posted a rant here - http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=671057 - about how I don't like the way Jagex badmouth Runescape fan sites, and I was thinking what people thought about Jagex potentially showing support in the form of a link for genuine fan sites that offer good information and services to Runescape players?

I would have to agree. Does anyone know what brought the end to the "Gold Star" system they had, or whatever it was?

I would be in favour of this so long as Jagex graded them with two criteria.

 

 

 

• 1. Quality/Content
   
  2. Security level (with popup warning box)

 

 

 

Sites like RuneHQ and TipIt would score highly on quality and content, but HQ would score low on security.

 

 

 

I think it's important that players know when they're visiting a site that's potentially dangerous regarding their account.

 

 

 

PopUp Warning Box

 

This would open a window explaining security measures you should take before going to the site, or subscribing to their forum.

 

1. Ensure your password is different from the one used on RS

 

2. Run a real-time virus checker, to monitor cookies and potential key loggers.

 

3. A quick tutorial on which security settings to enable/disable

 

 

 

You catch my drift I'm sure... security should be paramount when visiting these external sites.

They should only put major fan sites that have a lot of hits. Not little fan sites that have about 5 hits per day.

 

 

 

I think its a good idea, but Jagex won't do it. Its like the Swift Switch issue, they don't want others doing what they could get done. But they can't. Lol. They think they can though..

I'm sure Jagex doesn't like fan-sites because they're exactly that: fan-sites. Jagex has no control over what gets published (outside of complaints to our administrators, which are usually acknowledged) and so could risk harm to their reputation if anything were to happen.

 

 

 

For example, if Jagex linked to Tip.It as an official fan-site, and we have another issue with the password database like we did several months ago, people would complain to Jagex for liability because they endorsed the site that caused their accounts to be stolen.

 

 

 

I'm sure Jagex isn't necessarily attempting to shut down all the fan-sites by taking away their business, but are instead making it less necessary for players to go searching for a fan-site that may be dangerous to their computer and their account.

 

 

 

The reputation of Tip.It has been earned for a while, as has the reputation of RuneHQ. This word eventually gets out and people will then trust these sites and know they are safe. Of course, as I mentioned a bit before, no site is totally safe and Jagex is simply trying to prevent liability for any issues occurring with the sites.

Sad that Jagex won't at least post links to sites they have checked out and such.

To the second point you made, despite warnings we make about not using your Runescape password here, there are some people who are rather lazy or uncaring about the potential dangers of using their password elsewhere, and will still use the same password. I could probably safely bet that 10-20% of the accounts on Tip.It (that may be an exaggeration, but it may still be accurate) use the same password on Runescape as well.

Frankly I have great respect for sites such as Tip.it, and that is why I use it.....

 

 

 

 

 

However it would be a mistake in my view point to link it from the runescape site. As darkblade said Jagex have no control over the content of the sites, and with a company in the business like jagex, they would need to empose ALOT of guidlines on finsites to bring them into line.

 

 

 

Also you have to remember that unlike games such as warcraft, and other major MMORPGs Runescape is alot cheaper, and that piled with its gaming style it appeals more to the caula or younger gamer. Both of these groups are vunrable on the net, they tend to have less web safty.

 

 

 

Jagex as a company is very responsible over protecting it's community, and so they prefer to keep them in an envrionment where they can be protected, if you look at forum such as this one they are at higher risk.

 

 

 

Currently they are fairly safe as it's a small community, but by linking people here, you will be left with alot of scammers hackers etc, there is no censor on this forum an that would become a major issue. It would put mass pressure on the sites and will probaly detract from them.

 

 

 

The runescape site it pratically totaly secure the main point is they dont allow images to be posted, which can contain viruses..... basically there would be much higher levels of peoepl losing accounts.

 

 

 

Jagex also dont liek giving too much away, they deveoped the KB, and the quest help guide so that peopel can get tips and hints about how to do somthing, without beeing told directly how to do it, it does take alot of fun out of the game following a quets guide for example.

 

 

 

By showing peopel to these sites it would detract from the game.

just wondering: how are JAGEX responsible for the safety? - it is the users own responsibility I think..

 

 

 

about censor: well I don't really know if that's really effective, nor do I think it's needed (I mean come on if somebody types some swearing it's about the intention, not the words, so even if they write f*ck it's still the same)!

 

 

 

also I've never understood how an image can have a virus - apart from "bugs" in the software...

I'm sure Jagex could include a simple disclaimer on a links page where they link to Runescape fan sites absolving them of any responsibility for the damage that occurs on third party sites.

 

 

 

To be completely honest Jagex has no responsibility to anyone all Runescape accounts are still owned by them and if any damage was to occur to them there is no way someone could seek compensation for damages. The worst that could happen is bad publicity - which would be lost in the sea of endless complaints about Jagex's customer support.
