Windows Activation error

Featured Replies

Well I format my computer about 2 months ago, everything was fine, it activated fine. Worked perfectly.

Now all of a sudden soon as I log into my Windows XP account I get "You must activate this copy of Windows in 7 days" (now 6). I then go to click OK and to activate it and it says "this copy of Windows has already been activated" :?

This copy of Windows is legit and I payed for it.

I repeat this copy of Windows is legal.

Any ideas?

Well, you really only have a few options, you can :

- Call Microsoft support and see if they can help you (make sure you have proof that you bought the copy and everything).

- Buy a new activation key from Microsoft.

or

- Find an illegal crack that will give you a new key and help you activate your copy of Microsoft Windows.

:-w

I'd probably contact microsoft about it. Really there isn't terribly much you can do yourself, and I'm not sure how well a cracked windows would work for you.

Ok, I'll call them. How would I show proof I bought it? Just tell them the serial key?

I think so yeah. Not sure what they'll make you go through but hopefully you won't have to jump through too many hoops. With any luck they can give you a correct (new) key.

This same thing happened to me, and all you do is call them up, tell them your situation, and give them the cd key that should have been valid. Thry will give you a new key that you should write down as well as typing it into your computer, and when you do that, you now have a valid copy of windows. :D

when you activate windows chose the activate by telephone option.

dial the number and an automated system will ask for a long number displayed on your screen

after that the system will give you a activation number to enter on the same screen

this will only work if it a legit version of windows of course -.-

Never argue with an idiot - it only drags you down to there level, where he then beats you with experience.

Please read my first post again. When I say yes to activate it, the screen pops up and it says this version is already activated.

How can I use the activate by phone option if I can't click a darn thing when I go to the activation screen. I can't enter a code on the activation screen because it says it's already activated.

I'm going to call the main support line on Monday and speak to a real person.

It sounds like you may not have completely formatted your drive. If you simply used your Windows disc to do a repair, then it probably didn't repair properly and is giving you this problem (For example, I had to do that before, and several things wanted me to install SP2, but when I tried to, my computer said I already had it). Best thing I can say for you to do is to gather all the new files you want to keep and try reformatting again...

don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?

Nope I did a full re-format :x . O well I was hoping to not call tech support because usually they don't help at all, haven't tried Microsoft's yet.

I dislike a lot of things microsoft, but to be fair, when I've had to call their activation help lines, they have been very good and also don't try to keep you on the phone for too long like other support lines.
