September 1, 200718 yr Only hitch is they now contain ads. Either way - bit of a shame more developers don't do this. List of games stands as: Far Cry Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Ghost Recon I'm two minds about ads in games... but not having played the versions with ads, i can't say how much of an impact they make :? edit: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=42069 and this for some classics http://gamernode.com/News/3971-Get-CC-G ... index.html
September 1, 200718 yr I actually don't mind ads in games. I don't like when they put ads in games, and still charge the normal rate for a game. But it still doesn't bother me too much. Now this situation I am completely happy with. I am assuming releasing from commercial status means you can download them for free legally? I haven't looked on digg yet today for news so I don't know exactly what it means. If it does mean free, then it is awesome, even with ads. EDIT: No news on digg about it, so I checked out Ubisoft's website. No announcements about anything on there either. They are still selling the games in the downloads section.
September 1, 200718 yr Author yea hence why i didn't link to anything - first place i looked was the ubisoft website, including press releases. i can't seem to find anything other than files on various gaming ladders but from whati can tell it is all legit as no one has been told to take them down :-?
September 5, 200718 yr Sweet, I'm downloading Prince of Persia now and will download Farcry later :P I have to wait in line to download them, 33 minutes left to wait for PoP
September 5, 200718 yr I been playing Far Cry for the last few days. The advertisements only occur during loading times, because I often die repeatedly during hard battles I have been forced to watch dozens of ads in a row. To make matters worst I only get 1 McDonald's advertisement. Although I want to eat McDonald's I am also now hate that ad. One thing I have heard, is that the 'games' only work if you live in the USA. I took no chances so when i signed up to the Ubisoft website I put my location down as United States.
September 5, 200718 yr I don't mind ads in games, as long as they stay on in-game billboards and the like. If there is ever a flashing banner ad across the top of my screen, or I'm wandering around an RPG, kill a monster and pick up "Ronald McDonald's Helm of Dollar Menu Stamina", I'm going to kill everyone in advertising, though. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!
September 7, 200718 yr All of the advertisements have disappeared from my game now. Strange. Has that happened to anyone else?
September 7, 200718 yr All of the advertisements have disappeared from my game now. Strange. Has that happened to anyone else? Maybe they get the ads from a server and the server went down. I really want to play some Far Cry, I just don't have enough space for it right now. Do you have to download a file, and then install it? I haven't been able to do it yet so I don't know how it works.
September 10, 200718 yr All downloaded files which have not been activated are going to be made inactive through the ubi.com login. Previously, the ubi.com login would require a US country in order to install the game. Ubisoft will make the ubi.com login reject all entries into country. They hope to relaunch the program once we can add IP-blocking into our login process. So I guess we can't download and play them anymore...at least for now. Though it seems if you've already downloaded and played it, you can keep doing so.

I would think it would be a benefit to them because more people see the ads which would be more money for them. That is if the ads are for international companies.
September 10, 200718 yr The reason why they would block other countries might include. 1) The ads are for the US market. 2) Ubisoft probably has deals with distributors in other countries and they are likely to be in breached of the contracts by giving the game away.
