Stretch the coil so there is space between the loops. Then weight the copper wire to the nearest .01g. 2. Weigh a clean, dry 250mL beaker to the nearest .01g. Then weigh about .30-.45g of silver nitrate. 3. Fill the 250mL beaker 2/5 full with distilled water, and then add the silver nitrate to the water. Stir until all the silver nitrate dissolves. 4. Bend the copper wire handle so it can hang over the edge of the beaker with the coil in the silver nitrate solution. Observe any changes to the copper wire that take place in the next several minutes. 5. Observe what happened in the beaker during the next lab period, and record any observations. 6. Shake all the crystals off the coil, and remove the coil from the solution. Use a wash bottle to rinse off any more crystals and then set the coil aside the coil to dry. 7. Let the crystals settle in the beaker, then decant the solution. Save the decanted solution. Add 5mL of dilute silver nitrate until all the copper flecks disappear. Decant again. Wash the residue with 10mL of water and decant again. Wash and decant three more times. 8. After washing, dry the residue in a drying oven. Weigh the beaker and contents after it cools, then heat for five more minutes. If weight is lost, dry and weigh again. 9. Divide the blue solution in step seven into two equal samples. 10. Evaporate half of the solution and weigh the product. 11. Place the zinc into the other half of the solution. Observe any immediate changes, and any that happen after a day. Explain the observations.
