Maedie1's guide to not getting scammed. Updated Nov 4, 2007

Welcome

Welcome I see that you have opened my guide to your anti-scam. As a runescape player, I have personally felt these painful scams and I am going to list a few of them. But first I would like to tell you to read this whole guide and comment weather you liked it or not, that way I can improve it.[hide=Scams]

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃââThe take away: Suppose you are selling full rune and you want 180k for it. someone will put up 180k and then quickly take away 162,000GP and quickly accept, you accept without even knowing it and BAM! you just sold you full rune for 18k. Good deal huh?

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃââThe trust scam:A player will ask you if they can borrow your... It can be anything really. they say "Oh, can I borrow ur ... pl0x?" "Ill give it right back u no" The awnser to this scam is 99.99% of the time the player that you got cheated to logs out and BAM! You just lost your ... Whatever is was.... A santa.

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃââThe wildy scam:Heres the situation.. You're wearing full rune, you have on an Abyssal whip, wearing Dragon boots, and you're right behind the ditch. Someone goes up to you and says something that this girl (1 k0ed 2) said to my brother "Can you help me get into a clan? My brother said "...." She said "come on, it'll be super fast" So he gets lured up to lvl 10 in the wild and she says "turn off auto retaliate" so my brother does so and she says "let me lower ur health a little" so I gets lowered to about 20 she then says "here take these real fast" she trades him 4 noted Dragon battle axes, and then after the trade... She attacks him, and you know they're fighting in the whole nine yards in order to kill eachother and then! Sudden silence, my brother is in Fallador with 4 noted dragon battle axes and no whip. She had lured him in and killed him for the whip. she then tricks us into saying "Give me the baxes and ill give u the wip, i need to take a picture" so he gives her them and she logs out like a noob!

-What can you do? When you are in the wilderness I suggest that you turn off trade.

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃââArmor trimming:This is a scam that sadly happens way too much in Runescape. A player will be in Lumbridge usually, and they will say "free armour trimming~~~~~~~~~~scammer" (lol). If you hand them over your armor it is allways a scam and they will log out. There is no possible way to trim armor, the only way to obtain it is through a treasure trial.

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃââFree gem cutting:This one is a 50/50% chance that it will be a scam or real. A player will usually be inside a bank and will be saying "free gem cutting". USE CAUTION WHEN HANDING OVER YOU GEMS. If you're going to allow them to cut the gems I reccomend that you dont go any higher than diamond. Also don't give them more than five gems at a time.

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃââFree herb cleaning:Now that the update has happened, there are no more unid's or herb id'ing. But now the herbs are dirty and you can't make potions with them unless they're clean. People will sometimes advertise that they're cleaning herbs for free, this is like the gem scam, it may or may not be a scam. Usually it is only a 20-30% chance that it's a scam. However you don't need to depend on your herblore skills to clean these herbs, you can have a trusty friends clean them, or you can go to Nardah which is around where you start the quest "Itchlerans little helper". You can have your herbs cleaned for 200gp each.*stretches fingers out* wow I wrote alot about one scam. these are 3 of many scams in runescape. And I suggest you report any lures just like 1 k0ed 2, and eventually they'll learn that it is not right to scam people. [/hide]

[hide=Posting on my guide]

If you fell there is not enough information on my guide then here is what you can do. Write me up a story/Scam that you feel should be on my guide. Please don't put in any pictures as I don't think it would fit in. Also please do not post the topic, PM it to me instead and ill reply if I use it or not.[/hide]

[hide=Anti-virus links]http://www.Norton.com/ http://www.mcafee.com/ These are two sites I know that are reliable and will not put a virus in your comouter(Sounds funny, but some antivirus claiming sites, can harm your Computer)[/hide]

[hide=Key logging and Trojan horses] Keylogging: Keystroke logging (often called keylogging) is a diagnostic tool used in software development that captures the user's keystrokes. It can be useful to determine sources of error in computer systems and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks. Such systems are also highly useful for law enforcement and espionage̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ã

That wildy scam was just your bro being pretty dumb (no offense though). If he was paying attention, he wouldn't fall for it.

Also, the full rune thing won't really work anymore because of the update.

4/10. Not to be too critical, but the guide is a bit bland. After you've done some more indepth research on your topic, this might become a worthy guide.

Just a note: it's "you're", not "you'r".

Post something about key loggers, because they are far more dangerous. Something like GET A BANK PIN. Bank pin is the only way to protect your items - firewalls, anti virus and other stuff helps, but even combination of most popular firewall + anti virus + anti spyware can't stop a simple self-written key logger.

well not bad but u missed the armour trimming 1

u know when a person says that they are trimming armour for free and you giv em ure armour and they log off

another one is the gem cutting routine where a person says they wanna cut gems for increasing their lvl and they log off with the gems. this is sometimes a scam but most players really want to raise their lvls but because of the new updates that are going o take place in runescape this scam will be prevented

Pretty good guide, but I think under the free gem cutting one you should mention that most legitamate gem cutters will be trading cuts for uncuts. Also you forgot to mention 2 player scams, just say something like they usually take place in highly populated worlds, be wary of a level 3 buying something for 2 mil, and stuff like muddy keys, charcoal and polished buttons are used most often for this scam. You also might want to touch on the item duplication scam where they have you drop the item then press alt F4. But overall good guide.

Nice guide however, I fear it gives potential scammers new ideas less than it protects players who read it lol. ;)
