A plea to teenagers : get into college now.

My dad is about to lose his job along with 6000 others at the MG Rover factory. The entire art and music department at my school hate me and my prom date hates me for not buying a prom ticket (4 weeks away...)

Everything has gone beyond pear shaped, which is why i'm writing this topic. This is a plea to anyone who's just leaving high school : GET INTO COLLEGE NOW.

I applied for two colleges mid-late on in the year - south birmingham college, and new college. At both i applied for a course in music technology at BTEC level (2 a level's.) South birmingham sent me a postcard in the mail over a month ago telling me that i'd gotten an interview to get in. So I waited...and waited...and waited. Until tonight, I was still waiting until tonight, when my friend told me they'd rang him and told him there were no vacancies left. Nice of them to keep in contact.

2 weeks ago i applied for New college. Once again, I scored an interview. Same story - my friend was phoned, I wasn't. He applied for them both early.

Now i'm going into employment for a year to buy some good musical equipment. I regret not trying harder to get into college because now paying the consequences - a full year of employment because I didn't bother to fill in a form which would take half an hour at max. Lock this topic if you want, but don't delete it. People my age and younger need to know that if you don't apply for college early, it really screws up your life.

And why does the entire music and art department hate you?

Going to college is about as good as having a job. More likely than not you're going to end up broke for the rest of your life anyways.

This is the way the world ends. Look at this [bleep]ing shit we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm splitting, Jack.

I already leave college last year ago. I'm University student but I recommand most children who are about leave school then going college. Lots of my friends don't going college and most friends get jobs, quit college or unemployment. I'm pretty sure some my friends would screw their life in a few years soon.

My family is currently doing this E-commerce business and it seems to be going nicely. So far they've been making an extra $800 a month from it.

E-commerce is the future, right now only 6% of people in the US use it, so it's a good time to be getting into it, because once it's up to 100% (things like car companies, drug companies, etc are in 100%) you'll never be able to get in without investing million of dollars...My parents invested $150, already made 10+ times that back. :P

I don't know what I'm doing yet, this thing my parents are doing seems like a good thing to do. The guy they're "under" in the company makes $200k a year from this alone, he's retired, he's like 30 something, he just does this now. At this rate we're only making 10k give or take a year from this, but it's growing fast as they're getting more people to sign up.

I'm not 100% sure on how it all works, but the more people you have working "under you", the more you make. The guy who started all this is a billionare. You make something like 5 cents for every $2.17 the people under you spend, and the people under them, and under them, and under them, etc. So essentially, if there is 1,000 people total "under you", you make a ton of money. Right now my parents only have I believe nine people under them and they're already making $800, so..

I talked to an Economy expert the other night, he makes predictions and whatnot and has never been wrong, he says the economy is going to crash within the next 10 years or something, social security will be wiped out, 401k's, everything. People won't be able to live off SS or 401k's anymore.

My parents are doing e-commerce stuff. More specifically its something called quixtar. Right now there making an extra 20 grand a year from it and its a part time thing. Its basically just a way to get your own business started. And thats where financial security is: owning your own business.

College is like for skilled trades like electronics, engineering, accounting, police studies and etc. While universities are for academic studies like law, medicine, psychology and etc.

They are generally way easier than universities and the demand for their graduates are very high. But compared to universities, college graduates have lower pay.

Not to mention college tuitions are generally cheaper.

Good post.

However people, don't misspell 'college' as 'collage', because a collage is an artistic composition made of stuff stuck to paper, like the pasta collages you made as a kid. And I made for my mum for christmas last year.

And spelling it collage makes you look silly.

Ah, well if about sixthform: good idea. I honestly don't understand why some of my friends didn't come to college--they were perfectly capable. I gather that some people didn't want to come because they thought it would be too hard: I say that these people should give it a try anyway--colleges tend to offer a lot of good quality help for people who are finding it difficult to understand... what's more, even the people who didn't do so well at school have been holding their own at college, so far.

Sounds sort of pyramid scheme-ish, Dark_Tigra

Nah, e-commerce is totally different from pyramid schemes. A pyramid scheme is theoretically a scam like those iPod offers where you have to refer like 100 people under you and enter valid email/home addresses and sign up to tons of free trials, only then will you get an iPod.

E-commerce is more like being a site affiliate, like for Amazon.com. So every time you refer a new customer to amazon, you'll get 20% of everything they spend (a lot of people put these ads on google and make huge money by "selling" books).

Amazon benefits because they get guaranteed profit and only pay you the commission after the purchase is done. The only problem is that you'll need at least a few thousand dollars to start with advertising with big sites like google.

I'm not sure if it's true what Tigra says about the "economy crashing" etc. but I agree that this is the right time to get to e-commerce. It's still a relatively small business area making billions annually it's extremely cheap and easy to get in compared to other businesses. You could compare it to being able to buy Microsoft stock in 1980; The next couple of years could make you rich if you know what you're doing because in a decade or so the goldrush is lost already.

I think this is a silly post. What exactly is wrong with a year of employment between High School and College? I took a year off and Ive had one of the best years of my life. My will to continue my education is still as strong as ever.

My point is, college isnt right for everyone. And it is right for some people, but maybe not RIGHT AWAY. You shouldn't rush it. I was not ready for college so a year off was great for me.

Because this is england not america.

For all americans that don't know he means completing grades 11 and 12 in high school. Here we have 6th form which is 2 more years after grade 10 and have the option of staying onto a 6th form college. Then we either take a gap year and work and travel as nat said. Or we go straight onto uni for you college.
