All About Ram! (Ram Discussion)

Hi guys, i'm looking to learn as much information as possible about Ram, as I plan to buy another 1GB stick for my comp so i'll have 2GB for Crysis!

 

 

 

I bought my ram previously at KC Computers, this is what I got from them.

 

 

 

1GB PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 RAM 240-pin DIMM ~$65

 

 

 

Okay, look at this information, I understand alittle about it.

 

 

 

1GB (2 pieces) - ???? 800Mhz (speed) DDR2 (type of ram) 240-pin (not sure) DIMM (not sure)

 

 

 

So whats the -6400 mean? Does this improve if I get a higher number?

 

 

 

My computer accepts 240 pin ram, does this mean I cannot accept a higher/lower pin ratio ram?

Can i use 2 seperate rams from different manafacture brands if they are excatly the same thing?

 

 

 

Last question: Where can I buy a 1GB (1 stick please!), about the same as I have above, thats cheap? :D

Correct, only 240pin memory fits in a 240pin memory slot :P .

DIMM stands for Dual in-line memory module. It's the standard memory for all of today's systems.

Yes. If you get slower ram, all of the ram in the whole computer works at the same speed as the slowest. Which means don't get faster ram because it's a waste of money and don't get slower ram because you will get worse performance.

6400 is the speed of the RAM, I'm not sure exactly what it is or means. But if you take it and divide by 8 you'll get the speed in MHz.

 

 

 

DDR2-6400 /8= 800MHz

 

DDR-3200 /8 = 400MHz

If you increase this number you'll get faster RAM. Your motherboard will have a maximum speed of RAM you can use up to. Most modern motherboards on the DDR2 format can use 1066MHz (DDR2-8500).

The number represents its maximum bandwidth (transfer rate)

 

 

 

PC-6400 is capable at transferring data at 6400MB/s (6.4GB/s)

I"m trying to beef up my computer for Crysis! Here is my specs.

 

 

 

2.13 ghz E6400 Duo Processor

 

7900GT Graphics Card

 

1GB DDR2 800Mhz Ram

 

250 GB Sata Hard drive

 

 

 

So far I can play the game on medium with 20-30 fps respectively. When I try to put it on high, it locks up when I get to big areas, however its hard to take it off since its so beautiful!

 

 

 

So I thought about adding more ram, so thats why I'm adding this ram discussion! Using the task manager, I'm using up 1.5 Ram Wise which is 50% of which I don't have!

 

 

 

So any help on what I could do to beef up my computer? I was hoping I could buy another 7900GT to SLI but as luck would have it, they don't sell the one I bought on new egg anymore.

 

 

 

Any advice would be appreciated! Also, I tried to find adjusting my cpu in the Bio's but I can't find it.

Well there is no way you can play on high with your graphics card. I'm surprised you can play on medium with 1GB of ram.

 

 

 

The demo of crysis does not support dual gpu's (SLI) so buying another 7900gt will not have an impact. I don't know if the full game will, I'll be surprised if it doesn't, because it should. Wait till the full game is released before deciding (nov 11).

But I thought I would throw my opinion in :twisted:

 

Ram in the US is very cheap (well atleast compared to the UK) heres 2gb (1gbx2) of DDR2 800 (6400) ram with a cas of 4-4-4-12 for only $40 after rebates.

 

To improve you performance a bit you can always OC the processor. This is the best air cooled heatsink out at the moment (hence the $64 price tag) it should allow you to hit 3ghz+ with good temps.
