Deer Season!

I don't see what's particularly so "enjoyable" about killing another creature for your own entertainment, but if you're fine with it, I wont judge you.

It's not killing another creature that is the most enjoyable, else we would have "kill your own animal" farms, where animals are kept in cages and shot there for enjoyment. It's the act of the hunt that is found enjoyable, hence we have hunting lodges. Why do you think cats play with their prey?

That's what I thought as well, since I've also been to a hunting trip when I was a kid. I don't recall any of the adults "enjoying" the killing of a wild animal, the 'fun' part was chasing, spotting and actually finding a target. Sometimes, they'd also spot a very young animal and let it run along, they only targeted fully grown ones.

My comment was a reply to your claim that since we're also animals we should act like other animals do.

Well, we aren't "just another species on the planet."

I'd like you to clarify on that. As far as I know and have studied biology, history, species, etc.; humans are a species living on this planet, just like snakes, elephants, deer, lions, etc...

Humans, or human beings, are bipedal primates belonging to the mammalian species Homo sapiens in the family Hominidae (the great apes).

I don't have any problem with killing deer or other animals when there is an honest and reasonable justification for it. I DO have a problem when people try to justify it on the basis of myths and invalid rationalizations, such as claiming that being a vegetarian results in a comparable number of deaths to eating meat.

Being a vegetarian causes deaths of innocent animals. Being a male vegetarian increases your chance of dying compared to non-vegetarians due to nutritional reasons.

Just because you don't buy animal meat directly butchered by a human being... How does it make you a better person? If during the harvesting of wheat (so that YOU could have a special diet) animals die, you have sponsored it.

Earlier you referred me to an article about Steven Davis, right? His entire thesis is based on the "Least Harm Principle", and that's exactly what I'm talking about, so I don't know why you are confused.

There are so few "real" vegetarians that don't touch a single thing which has been alive I doubt I've ever even spoken to a "real" one. Even the British Vegetarian Society allows membership to people who consume chicken.

Beef is meat.. Chicken is a vegetable then I guess?

No, they would say the guy who killed 10,000 was less bad than the one who killed 50,000.

That's a ridiculous point. Nobody is calling Hitler "less bad" than Stalin because he caused "only" 6 million deaths compared to Stalin who directly caused the deaths of over 20 million people.

I don't see why a person who "only" contributed to killing 5 animals for his meal is any more better than a person who contributed to killing 10 animals. They are both "guilty" for gathering their meal to survive.

In this post you claimed that humans "need to kill animals to survive". If it's based on a need for survival, how can the number of animals killed for this need not be relevant?

I agree with that. Killing animals as a sport isn't necessary for humans to survive. That's a different moral issue you have to take up with hunters though. Some people really don't do it for the food. I, though, don't kill anything unless I intend to eat it.

Sport fishing is, IMO, one of the worst forms of animal abuse. If you eat the fish, that's different.

I don't fish much, when I do, I eat everything I catch or share it with my friends.

But really, what difference does it make to the fish if it's eaten or not? It's dead, it's not going to care if it's left there to rot or if it gets made into a nice salmon pie.

I leave alone insects that leave me alone. Those that attack me I defend myself against. Again, a simple principle.

How isn't killing mosquitoes and insects animal abuse? They need your blood to survive. They're not attacking you, just like people who shear wool off sheep to survive the winter colds aren't 'attacking' sheep. Does the sheep kill you because you're using his resources without permission?

So you feel it's okay to use that as an excuse to not even make an effort to improve?

What am I improving towards? How is a vegetarian superior to a person like me who eats meat? Both types of person sponsor the killing of animals to stay alive. I'm not judging a vegetarian, and they can't judge me (especially if they eat animal meats such as chicken or fish).

Well, I reckon I am the odd ball in the bunch but I actually enjoy killing deers . I consider deers as one less broke windshield/dent in vehicle o.0

I never said that i don't enjoy killing the deer. I was definitely born with the hunter's instinct. Plus deer steaks are infinitely better than any steak you can get from Outback or the steakhouse of your choice. =P~

Yeah, if you eat it for the nutrition value (steak), I don't see why vegetarians/animal right activists have an issue about it. I *never* bring up the fact that non-meat products such as soy still produce numerous animal deaths while being produced. :)

The only thing that comes to my mind is using traps instead of hunting yourself. That's cowardly. The animal could suffer there in a cold forest for days until it bleeds out and other predators come to feast on it while it's still alive.

Or, torturing animals just for the entertainment value. That's so grossly unfair and sick towards the animal who can't defend itself, it's prohibited by law in every western country and in some countries, you don't just get fined, you could go to jail for that kind of animal abuse.

Not just that, but you know what they say about how 'small animal torturers turn out as adults'...

well, this thread's already gone off topic enough, so I'll just go ahead and say it.

If you live in India, you marry a dog 15 years later to try and make up for it.

i hunt squirrels occasionally, but not very often as they're a pain to clean and cook and i won't kill them if i'm not going to eat them. also there are very few bears in missouri and we don't have a bear season anyway.

Yea they are a pain to clean but theyre really good in stew. But this bear season they killed 74 bears and broke 2 records 1st bear 570 lbs and the 2nd 574  I live in the swamp lol so we got a lot of em

Deer steaks rock. My boss and her husband hunt frequently and she is going to make us deer burgers in a few weeks.

I'd rather eat dear than cow. Deer get a noble death against a predator. Cows just get sledged in the head. And I so loooooove cow.
