Help with Norton Internet Security 2006

Recently, within the past couple of days, I haven't been able to access Norton Inernet Security. I first noticed this when I wa supdating guild wars and my firewall didn't display a screen that asks if wanted to allow Guild Wars to run.

I've also tried going to start->programs-> NIS...but it never displays the control center for Norton. However, just 20 minutes ago, it ran it's update system and successfully updated NIS. Also, through some looking, I found that it was listed as 'Enabled'...but the notification icon isn't showing in the lower right. I checked, and it's set to display the icons if it is Enabled.

So, can anyone help me? I didn't find anything useful from Symantec (the guys who made NIS2006..stupid large businesses..). I'm also pretty sure this isn't a virus...I haven't experienced any noticeable decrease in system speed.

Any ideas?

You're not going to like this, but I wouldn't let Norton's Internet security anywhere near my PC.

Uninstall it and use something else instead, there's lots of free software available that does a much better job and doesn't impact on system performance like Norton's does. Use the following instead:

1 Enable the Windows Firewall, there's nothing wrong with the built in firewall as it does exactly the same thing that any other firewall does. If you're not happy with that, use Zone Alarm.

2. Use Avast for virus Protection, only ever use one virus protection software at any one time.

3. For spyware detection and protection, I would install the following: Windows Defender, Ad-Aware free & Spybot.

Quite honestly, I'm all for completely removing Norton. That's the problem though..everyone else in my family is convinced that it's the best thing since computers were invented, therefore I *cant* uninstall it....I'm with you though, if I ever get a PC (besides the one running linux im on right now), Norton's not going ANYWHERE near it. It's missed too many threats in the past on that PC for me to ever use it again.

Thanks anyways though :) :)

This isnt a topic to bash Norton. I expect better advice from you ClareJonsson. This is a topic to help sort out the problem not to tell them that their choice of AV is rubbish (which it's not).

For the record: I don't use Norton on all of my pcs but the ones that do have it have NEVER experienced any problems or slow downs like some people suggest.

Windows Firewall does NOT perform exactly as other firewalls. It blocks anonymous incoming requests ONLY , just like everyones so called "router firewall".

Neither of which stop programs running on your computer from sending information OUTWARD.

Do your research before posting.

And like Mercifull, I have never experienced slowdowns caused by Norton, McAfee, or any other protection suite. People just like to have a scape goat and they point fingers since they aren't qualified to actually find what really is causing the problem.

Post a HiJackThis log.

This will not only display rogue programs running but it'll also tell us whether or not Norton's is running.

Worst case scenario, uninstall Nortons and run the Norton Removal Tool to remove all traces of it.

Reinstall Nortons. :) I assume because it is already installed you'll have the disk for it. If you don't, phone Symantec and see if they can help you. As long as you have your key you should be OK.

Personally I'd use freeware antivirus and firewall like Clare suggested. But if you're already paying for Nortons, I don't see why you should use it. :)

As for antivirus programs slowing down computers, I've never had any trouble with Nortons personally or in a professional environment. McAfee on the other hand I've had countless problems with. All the exact same thing. It makes a computer grind to a halt. Admittedly this has only been experienced in slower computers. <1GHz, 256MB RAM, 5400RPM HDD. But it does happen. So lay off Clare guys. :P

Granted the firewall doesn't popup every-time a new program attempts to open an outgoing port, but then you got antispyware to sort out anything you don't want accessing the net.

If you really want a firewall with all the bells and whistles, then try Comodo Personal Firewall, which is also free.

Sorry if this sounded like a topic bash, but I really have had that much trouble with Norton's. We have a LOT of PCs go through our hands. I was only giving my advice on the experience of my team of which there are 8 technicians in our section in a busy University.

I will avoid this topic now if you like, because of my anti norton bias :|

This happens *any* time Norton is brought up as a problem. Some people chime in saying they've also had problems, Merc and others post saying they've never had a problem with it and the crap storm begins.

Regardless of personal opinions, the OP specifically stated Norton is having issues displaying dialogs properly. If uninstalling it and replacing it gets rid of the problem and still protects the machine, so be it. Removing Norton generally DOES fix the problem when it's having a fit so that option shouldn't be thrown out the window just because some people havn't had any problems with it. I personally have. I know many people that also have. People need to except it and stop bashing the removal of it solely because they have never had a problem.

Alright, thanks to everyone who posted! I won't do any of this just yet..my Dad's back in now, so he said he's gonna take a look at it....so...I probably won't have a say in it. I'll come back if I have any problems, Thanks everyone! :D

I'll get back in sometime to let you know if we got it back or not.
