I've been seeing this a lot too. I personally report my thread and request a lock when my question is answered to stop further postings on it. I suppose that's all we can do.

 

 

 

If you see a thread with many of the same answer, you could just report it and put "answered" as your reason. I've done that a few times and some friendly neighborhood mods helped locked them :D.

What seems to be a more apparent problem is people asking staff to close their threads.. why? I have never understood this desire to have one's thread closed, especially if it's a tech problem. The point of having a forum is not for people to create a thread and have it never be looked at again but rather for threads, old and new, to be posted on with new commentary. There can't be any new discussions or questions raised if all the threads are locked or the original post is wiped clean and replaced with "Question answered."

 

 

 

 

So... I don't know. Maybe it's an unsolvable problem...

Well I agree that some threads should be left open to further encourage discussion and different opinions, some threads present questions that are straight forward

 

The latter doesn't really need further answers if a single answer (or possibly a few) is sufficient in answering the question. These are usually the types of threads I see the most repetitive answers since it's usually a simple answer that many people know and agree on.

 

 

 

Giving people the ability to lock their own threads may be a bad idea, but letting moderators decide when a thread is answered seems ok to me.

Either way, I don't really see this as a matter of extreme importance. Sure people are probably just doing it to increase their post count, but whatever. It's silly to obsess over post count, but it's also silly to obsess over people obsessing over their post count :anxious:

 

 

 

As long as they're not posting jibberish and are making an attempt to help out (even if it's not necessary), it's not really an issue in my opinion.

But seriously, if that was done the rank above your avvy would be blank. As long as the people who post are not spamming to raise their post count, meh, let them post. It doesn't hurt. If they were spamming, they'd be removed from tif. A win-win! :o :o

Albosky was actually all for removing it but didn't because of the mass of idiots that would scream their brains out over a number when that huge 20 page thread started.

:lol: Exactly what I was thinking as well. Who cares really if post count stays or it doesn't, you don't post on these forums (I hope) to increase your ego by a high post count, neither should people care enough to be annoyed at people wanting post count to stay. Its not really a big deal.

In some cases people refesh the page, see that theres a new question asked, click on it, read it, and reply to it.

 

 

 

I've seen this donw with four people once, they all hit 'Submit' at the same time (not knowing theres someone else answering it) so you get a few answers saying the same thing, Also people have been know to clarify what previous people have stated above them, however these arn't the case for the thread you posted a link to.

 

 

 

The only conclusion I can come to is people either A think there answer is explained more, or B just want a higher post count... :-k

As a H&A mod, I personally don't see the point in locking topics when they've had a couple of answers, as others have already said; having more people post will increase the accuracy and depth of each answer. :)

 

However it is not my place to stop users from requesting their topics to be locked and deciding for myself.

 

 

 

I really do hate it though when a user edits out the initial post and title to ask for the thread to be locked, as I strongly feel that questions should be archived for other Tip.iters to search for when they have a similar question.
