No, these are not manipulated (apart from being scaled down). No, these aren't ripoffs from someone else - I shot them myself when I was in Crete, from the beach and hills of Agia Pellagia, near Heraklion. (read the EXIF data for some kind of date/time confirmation if you still don't believe me).

Anyhow. I shot the above on holiday, and I'm simply wondering what you think. CC would be very helpful - I'm abysmal when it comes to creating photoshopped sigs or whatever, but I can't say these look all that bad - but which is best? Why?

What could have been improved when I shot these? (read the EXIF data if you think you have ideas)

What could I improve using Photoshop / GIMP?

FYI, these are scaled down versions of the original 5 Megapixel pics. So plenty of additional data if I do indeed choose to edit them.

yeh, some nice shooting. Personally I prefer the 800 x 598 (2nd one). In photoshop you could einther darken the bottom to get a complete sillouette or lighten it to show a bit of detail, I dunno which would look bast without doing it.

To turn this one into a sig, you obviously need to make it more rectangular rather than square shaped (i know, i know, a square technically is a rectangle) But it would be a pretty good sig even if you just put text on that I think (perhaps animate text?) To get it more to a 1:1.6 dimension (which is what most people prefer) you can either strach it or crop it. If you're gonna crop it, I would suggest keeping nearlly all of the sky and cropping away some of the foreground

These are just my opinions, I can't really say what other people like best...

Crete...

wheres that...?

South of Greece mainland, west of Israel, North of Egypt. Ought to give you an idea.

As for the sig thing, I don't know if I want to make a sig out of it. I might, I just don't know :)

i think you should at last try to make a sig ofit, it wouldn't take much effort at all, and if it dont look good, what have you lost? 15 minutes?

anyways, up to you...

Umm, yeah. Well, you asked for it. *shrug*

I care more about the originals than about the sig - if I wanted a goodlooking sig, I could just use stock photos.

;) Okay time for some C&C since you requested it hehe.

The first picture reminds me a lot of the Odyssey where Odysseus is staring out to sea, wondering if he'll ever return home. Of course, the person in the picture is female... But it does capture a feeling of just staring out and being lonely. If you wanted to make a signature based on such a theme, that'd be the picture to use. :)

The second one sort of reminds me of Mt. Fuji, where the sun and mountain meet. :D There's a good sense of balance between the landscape and the buildings surrounding it. Definately would use that image for a signature if were to do.

The third and fourth ones: I LOVE the color the sunset (I'm assuming it's sunset lol) has made. If only there weren't any boats there. :P

The fifth one, sadly, is the one I don't like as much as the others, mostly because the buildings just seem to kinda hang to the side and don't really seem to fit with the rest of the scene. :-?

Great shots, Hanni! :D

Very good Han, but i think the best one is the second. Sunset pictures look really great but the time of day you took them is still a bit too light. Wait a bit later until its darker but you can still see the orangey red clouds or take it earlier when the sun is low in the sky but still visable, you want it a key feature in the image. Well done :D

Actually, everything but the first is a sunrise. I took them at about 6.30 local time (the time on my camera was dutch time, so one hour earlier). We had to be somewhere near a hotel place, somewhat uphill, for an excursion. So I took the opportunity to make the above. I suppose that you're right though, so it may have been better to go there earlier (in this case).

Thanks for the hints though :D

If I had to choose a favorite it'd be the second one. There's just something going on, it's interesting. The rest, there's nothing really spectacular. The colors don't pop, so it makes it sort of bland. Something that can be done about this is adjusting levels in Photoshop. If that's too complicated, just adjust the brightness and contrast. A border also adds a lot to images, and cropping does too. It can make an image entirely different depending on the cropping.

Last, they are the slightest bit blurry. If you want a little better quality, you might downsize them a bit (along with the other tips I gave). A 5 Megapixel camera isn't perfect, that's all I have, but it should be able to look better at smaller dimentions.
