Jagex's business plan flawed? Immature?

If Jagex is deleting 50,00th post on a certain issue its time to think about what the majority of the players want. Jagex can be a money hungry pig all they want but only to the point until people get fed up with it. Without players there would not be any real word trading or any "trading" whatsoever.

JaGex + business plan = flawed is a false statement because the fact is, it works. As long as people keep paying them to play their silly game then it doesn't matter what the hell they do with it.

Agreed. Can't look at the success the company has had and put those three words in the same sentence.

If I was starting a browser-based MMORGP right now, Jagex's business plan is exactly the one I would try to emulate. To do otherwise would be a 'flaw' and 'immature'

Language filter is an option you choose to turn on or off. Younger players' accounts are under parental control and parents decide if they want to censor mature language. And if you ever play world of warcraft the community is much more civilized because if players need to say something they can and don't spam because they are constantly censored.

What you don't seem to see it that there is no need for bad language, most mature players, whilst find the censor annoying..... respects its purpose. It is the view of Jagex, and a large amount of the player base that they would like a clean and polite community, there is never a need to use bad language!

But why has it worked in WOW...... to be honest the reason is simple..... Runescape is a free game..... and WOW is quite an expensive one. Just that boundary is what makes all the difference, if Jagex charged more for the game it would be allot better in terms of community, as the more immature players with less money cannot get it, and those in have more to lose by being rude.

Now I am not a programmer so I cannot criticize whether or not runescape has an effective anti-botting system. But what is the deal with random events? From the start this is like putting a band aid on a leaking dam and waiting for the next crack to patch. In fact if Jagex could not predict this from the start the first random event understanding bot should've raised the red flag that this strategy is not a viable solution. Instead of turning to better detection mechanism like the majority of companies do they made another one, and soon after that one was programmed in new bots another one. Jagex is in a constant race with hackers at the expense of the players. They use the "would you rather see hackers everywhere" excuse to put more of them in but it is a ridiculous reason. Jagex is a business and it is their responsibility to look after their game. When players are forced to do the job of an anti cheat system it just gives the game bad reputation.

A simple example is the 60 second time out limit. I am not saying that being AFK for a long period of time should not log the player out but you log out even if you are doing something like cutting trees. Now why would I click on the same tree I'm cutting within 60 seconds if I am cutting it even if I don't click it. It's not whether it's hard but whether it's necessary.

As they have stated they are reviewing the use of all random events, and will be removing alot of them, so I don't see what we have to gain from it;s discussion.

As for the log out system, look at if from another angle, Jagex want people to be playing their games, not accounts afk for who knows how long. People are chucked off the forums for a number of reason:

keep the servers free for people wanting to play

reduce costs of bandwidth of all absent players

protect player accounts from ingame events

protect accounts from theft (remember you must be incontrol of you account at all times)

any many other things

How does any of this relate to some sort of "business plan"?? A company's business plan involves their models for invoking growth and increasing revenue; the only point you bring up that might be related to that is the customer service bit, but heck are there really that many businesses in the entire world that leave people giddy over their customer service?

Now there are countless threads about the language filter Jagex uses. Why is the filter so harsh? Well Jagex made runescape to make money. No it's not about what is best for the players or what is best for you. It's solely about money. Assuming Jagex decided that by restricting content to 0 mature language they will draw in younger audience where parents would tolerate the game as it is "safe."

What about many players who are older and feel the filter in unnecessary? Well Jagex for reason unknown decided to flat out look past this point of view. There are many people who don't like the filter and whether or not they feel strongly enough not to stop playing the game it is a considerable part of the population.

In fact first thread in rants is about the censor.

Why is Jagex ignoring all these people, what is their gain from this?

I couldn't agree more with your statement of "it's not about what is best for the players or what is best for you. It's solely about money". That explains why a filter is in place in the first place - I can guarantee you that the older/more mature population of the game has a lower tolerance for a bunch of people running around spouting off whatever naughty words cross their minds than those purveyors of pottymouthiness have for being censored. In other words, Jagex stands to lose more players due to not having a filter than due to having one, since (in my opinion) older/more mature players don't feel like looking at all that stuff all day while 'scaping. I know I wouldn't.

That picture from the forums only shows that they like to try and keep the boards clean and consolidated, and not much else. The entire rants forum would be inundated with stuff about the filter if it wasn't condensed into a single topic. 13k posts isn't even that big of a number compared to the entire RS p2p population, and it's not like Jagex is somehow obliged to listen to rants.

A censor that can be turned on or off by the player? That would raise potential issues with parents. Either way, though, I don't believe the inclusion of the filter has any sort of negative impact at all on Jagex's bottom line (their income, in other words), which this thread is supposedly about.

Because of lack of programming knowledge I cannot offer an alternative but if you look at Blizzard over 90% of all botters were banned a few weeks ago and not for a second a player was forced to repeat a stupid minigame instead of focusing on his gameplay.

I don't play WoW, but I believe that in order to combat bots they use a separate program that must be installed on a player's computer with the actual WoW program. I don't know much more about that, other than hearing that some have called it spyware. Either way, though, you need to realize that RS and WoW are fundamentally different. The "business model" of RS is entirely predicated on RS being a cheap, simple game (compared to WoW, etc.) that can be played in one's browser with no additional software required. Including an anti-bot program would completely buck the strategy RS has been built on for years now; this is much too radical of a change, especially considering just how successful RS has been with their current no-additional-software strategy. Emulating Blizzard's system simply makes zero sense for Jagex.

Now this literally made me laugh. In the pking section on runescape forum there was a sticky which contained a sentence "Wilderness is not coming back so please stop requesting it, furthermore any threads asking to bring wilderness back will be treated as spam"

Did the company powered by players and players only just label customer feedback as spam?

Sure, maybe Jagex customer service needs a lesson in tact, but what are they supposed to say? It's almost cliche at this point to explain why the wilderness is never coming back, so any queries about it pretty much are spam.

Jagex customer service is lacking, I will admit that. Of your three main points, this one is the only reason for which I have ever seen any of my friends quit RS. However, as I said above, unfortunately the sheer nature of customer service usually leaves the customers disappointed. This is especially true when the poor CS people are dealing with thousands of queries about things like the wilderness every day! That is just one of the fact of life, or at least it is more so than a poor business choice on the part of Jagex.
