Query: "Notify Me" option on Reports

Recommended Posts

Hello, Tip.It Staff...

I have a query in regard to the reporting system, seeing as it got a major change with the advent of PhpBB v3 ...

  1. [*:2s6g1o0h]Will users actually get told somehow if they set "Notify me" to "Yes", and their report does get handled? [*:2s6g1o0h]Also, will the message show up in the forums somewhere, or will I be e-mailed (which means I'd never know for a while) about it? [*:2s6g1o0h]Or have the forums been configured to never respond back to that option?

Seeing as I know that all of you are totally bogged down at the moment, I'll just sit back and wait a long time for an answer. (BTW, I'd insert some sort of happy emote here, if I could.)

You've got me fluffled to that answer. Why not report your post here and we'll give it a test run?

I just checked what you were asking and I received no reply saying the report was handled. However, I find it kind of a useless feature anyways, your report will be handled in time, no need for you to be notified. :)

By the way, I will edit this in if I figure out how to see if something was notified. I have yet to find it, but I may come across it later in my search. :D

I actually take that back, you receive an e-mail if you asked for notification. :)

(Mine was delayed about 2 days, but I am guessing it is because of our forum work.)

An E-mail, huh? Darn... And I can't get to my mail very often. :(

This may trigger a suggestion from me. Stay Tuned. :geek:

I don't see why anyone would need a notification anyway. The Moderators deal with every report when they have the time for this, and if the users are interested in checking up on the topics/threads, they can bookmark them instead.

You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now?

Sometimes mods don't make it evident if the thread was even reviewed if they don't do anything.

It sends you an email with the name of the mod that checked it and information about what action they performed.

If I may:

Hello YourForumName,

You are receiving this notification because the report you filed on the

post "PostName" in "TopicName" at "Forum.Tip.It" was handled by a moderator or

by an administrator. The report was afterwards closed. If you have further

questions contact ModName with a personal message.

Users don't need to know if they're report has been handled, when it was handled or by who. As long as the boards are staying clean and usable, that's all that should matter to anyone outside the staff. If they wanted people's input on how they handle reports or how long it takes they would explicitly ask for it. If they aren't getting handled in a timely manner the rule breaking content will quite obviously pile up.

Just because you reported it doesn't automatically mean something is going to happen. Notifying people that they're report was handled and a mod didn't feel it broke any rules only opens the door for people to start complaining more.

What Cruiser said. ^

It's really this easy:

All reports are handled. That's it. :) No report gets ignored or closed without a moderator looking at it.

True, but it does help some of us to know when something gets handled and/or ignored... Sometimes, getting that prompt to check back can allow discussion between the reporting user and the Moderator, so the reporting user can understand why the report got handled/ignored in the manner that it did... In turn, this prevents several useless reports happening about the same item, and can also prevent a user waking up one morning with a warning in their inbox about reports. 8-)

Just because the moderators don't act (as you predict or can see) on all reports, doesn't mean they ignore it. There is always the choice of contacting an Administrator if you disagree with a Moderator's decision, or if you think a topic needs a second opinion. I contact an Admin or other Moderators for second opinions if I am in doubt.

As Laikrob said, NO reports are closed for no reason. If no action is taken then it's because no action needed to be taken. I personally review all closed reports to make sure that they were handled correctly. I can assure you that no moderator closes a report just for the hell of it. They close a report because they dealt with it or they felt that no action needed to be taken. If they're unsure on how to handle a specific report, they will leave the report open and wait for another moderator to handle it.
