What Errdoth suggested is about popularity aswell.

People will give friends a good rating, no matter how bad it is.

And people they don't like may make the best post this forum has ever seen, they won't give him/her a good rating.

That's why a generic point system would work better. If only mods/admins/crewbies can hand them out, there will be less abuse. Plus, if they post topics about them saying "my rating is better than yours", their rating will be deducted because they clearly aren't performing up to the standards that the forum wants.

Of course it's about popularity, it's _always_ going to be about popularity. But if you're making "good" posts, there's no reason why you wouldn't be popular. (popular in that you're someone whose post's people enjoy reading)

I can't say I agree with you on the other points:

Friends might be more apt to give other friends better ratings, but I don't think that, once past the initial hype, ratings will be important enough (remember: they do *nothing*) for people to go around and hunt down their friend's posts to rate them :/

If people you don't like are making the best posts in the forum, then you probably don't have the best reason not to like them; one or two people refraining from rating a post (there doesn't _have_ to be a disagree option) isn't going to hurt anyone, and if the whole forum is refraining from rating them, they're probably not making the best posts the forum has ever seen, or they've gone done something that completely frelled their reputation with the community.

Again, I don't think not getting as many ratings as the next guy is going to make people go emo. In example: The forum I capped those pics from is filled with [developmentally delayed]s. The rating system works fine. Sure, the admins and the people with craploads of posts have more ratings than the average user, but that's because they've earned them. Tbh, if those forums can handle it (where if you're reading a topic and there's not at least one mention of a meme, you're probably reading the archives) Tipit most definitely can.

I don't really see a use for forum points. I mean what would you "buy?" You mentioned Tip.it avatars - well most people have their own - and custom ranks - but we have the Rank Contest specifically for that.

I have been against a rating system in the past, but I honestly don't have a problem with trying it out as long as there's a MOD for it that will suit our needs/wishes. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, no harm done. Naturally there would have to be some limits (how many ratings you can give per day, etc.). Clearly it's a popular idea so I don't see any harm in trying it out. Oftentimes people just say "No" every time it's suggested because "The idea was rejected before," but don't really stop to think about it again. As long as limits are set, I don't think it would do too much harm (if any) and as others have said, it may be kind of fun.

I personally would love to have a point system. <3:

For example, you could buy guides for the points (Runescape, Graphics, etc.). The of-course custom titles, colors for your name and so on. I really would love it. ::'

But then I understand the No-factor. Of course it would lead to more spam.

We could try this thing out in the Guides, Rate this, and gallery. If the bugs&suggestions forum was split into Bugs and another for suggestions, i'd say that aswell. They're the main forums where people rate ideas.

Also, we could have it to that nothing can be bought with these points except maybe the honour of receiving them.

Sorry, but I really don't want to have to spend my time handing out point thingys. Even if I just did it as I was browsing, there wouldn't be enough of us (staff) doing it to make it worthwhile.

I do, however, support a system where only positive "points" can be given. Just make sure that there's nowhere public that says how many "points" a user has been given, as that would bring it back into a popularity contest type thing. This also might help with stopping the "+1" posts.

Thanks for all your input guys. Like Jimmyw3000, maybe try it out in one of the forums to see if it works.

And Kaphias, I know what you mean. There are two ways there. Overworking the mods or giving this privilege to users. I don't want it to be too much work for you guys, you do enough already, this will be straining their boundries.

I would say only give points to the people who take the time and think through a mature response to a post. Somehow it has to be practical :|
