A couple days ago, I noticed a small addition to the Tip.it forums. At the bottom of every screen, there's a little readout that looks like this: [ Time : 0.048s | 10 Queries | GZIP : Off ]. I get what time means, but can anyone tell me what queries are, and especially what GZIP is?

Thanks to Uno for the awsome sig <3

Gzip is a software compression tool, although I can't say for sure what its purpose would be on these forums.

I have been wondering what that is too over the past days :-k

Anyway, I requested that this topic be moved into 'Forum Updates and Suggestions', where hopefully an Admin' or the like can answer your query.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

It's also used for HTTP compression, and can greatly decrease page loading times. Only reason I can see for it being turned off is that is was replaced with something better. If not, then it should probably be turned back on :/

EDIT: Blah, said increase instead of decrease :/

Could explain why I'm experiencing slow forum loading times...every darn single page. >.>

I doubt it.

I don't know why they haven't turned on GZIP compression either, the database must be quite large by now. It is also recommended by the Yahoo! extension for Firebug "Yslow", I found.

Actually I turned it on in the phpBB config. We've been looking into speeding up the load times on the forum pages, there are two reasons GZip isn't on.

1) The forum CPU load is already massive.

2) Because of this GZip actually makes the pages load slower (or gives no gain at all).

This will be turned back off once I've finished recording my results.
