The Mars Volta + Sparta = At-the-drive-in

I've noticed many of you enjoy TMV's music, and I was wondering if you knew about their former band ATDI?

Their history is long, so tl;dr: At-the-drive-in was emo+experimental. Emos got emo and formed Sparta, which in my opinion, does not hold a candle next to TMV or ATDI. The two experimental musicians from ATDI formed TMV.

If you've heard any of the three, I recommend checking out the other 2. My favourite are:

-The Mars Volta

-At-the-drive-in

-sparta

Amputechture is my favourite TMV album... I can listen to them jam on the bus all morning even if it smells like BO and some goofball is elbowing my in the back. how about you?

You'd have to be a complete imbecile to not know of At The Drive In if you like The Mars Volta. At The Drive-In has always seemed to me to be a little more inspired music while The Mars Volta seems to be the members exploring their instrument's every limit, and having seen them in concert, I can say that they successfully explore every sound their instrument can make.

De-Loused In the Comatorium will always remain The Mars Volta's greatest and most critically acclaimed piece of art.

Oh man, I'd give anything to see them in concert. My "Music in Literature" teacher is totally against all modern music, he's even iffy with some Jazz musicians. Anyways, I played him Vicarious Atonement (for the extremely well done voice & response guitar) and he was actually quite impressed with their music. That pretty much guaranteed my respect for the band right there.

I also wanted to discuss Sparta.. Does anybody like their common music or were they better off in ATDI?

Cedric and Omar MADE ATDI. The whole sound was manufactured by them. The other guys were just there for supporting roles and it is still the same way in TMV to an extent.

Their concert was absolutely amazing. No warm-up band and they came on stage and played for 3 straight hours. No talking, just music continuously for 3 hours. One of the best live shows I've seen. Most of the songs had long improv solos from many different sections of the band.

Yeah, they're pretty cool.

Haven't really gotten round to listening to any of The Mars Volta though (DX), any recommendations?

De-Loused In The Comatorium

Their best album to date, although the Tremulant EP is pretty good as well.

I have At the Drive-in's Relationship of Command, I really like it. I haven't listened to it in a long time though.

I also have the Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium, but for some reason I've never listened to it. I probably should.

I'm with you there. Amputechture's my favorite too, but then again, I still haven't listened to Frances all that much.

As for the others, it doesn't sound like I'd like Sparta much, but I haven't heard any of At the Drive In either.
