Is Firemaking useless as a general skill?

I wanted to answer this so you could understand...

Here are a few reasons why it isn't useless:

1. vyrewatch burning- lots of money there...

2. pyre ship burning- if you're lucky there's some money there

3. hot air balloons- makes traveling easier

4. inferno adz- dragon axe/rune pickaxe all in one

5. without firemaking you wouldn't be able to relight lanterns and candles when they go out

6. you wouldn't be able to light house burners by alters in your house without firemakeing- less xp/bone offered=more expensive skill and longer skill?

1. Wrong. Even Flax picking wins over it.

2. Getting the bones is so tiresome and costly its just not worth it.

3. Those things are useless...

4. When do you WC and mine at the same time?

5. WITHOUT. <-- Keyword.

6. Do those even need FM levels for that? If it does, then its back to Ecto.

If you have to ask, then no, they don't. Neither do lanterns and candles and hot air balloons--they would function just the same if the firemaking skill did not exist. Shade/vyrewatch burning, pyre ships, and the adze are pretty contrived uses for the skill, as if someone in Jagex said, "Hmm, firemaking sucks, what could we add to the game that could use it?"

I think firemaking needs to move away from making little campfires. It should focus more on elemental control of flames, sort of like magic, only with completely different mechanics (no runes). Flaming arrows and swords are one obvious usage of the skill; there are also potential applications in smithing.

It would be so awesome if they actually made firemaking useful like that. ::'

They already have fire arrows although I'm not sure if they actually do anything different then normal ones.

They don't, which is exactly why it would be so easy to revise them.

I don't think it can be made into a combat skill or affect combat.

You have to "do" the skill to level skills up(in most cases). If it was a combat skill, or could make "combat" items, it could be trained by burning logs, which is much differnet from the other part of the skill. Its unlikely Jagex would make a whole new "part" of the skill, so different from it's original purpose.

Also, flame arrows would probably be more fletching. Adding fire to arrows would be the most likely possiblity, but its still a very weak idea considering there is fletching.

Also, fire arrows do have a use, besides the quest, I BELIEVE(think) they have a max hit +1 of the normal type. Also, if your AFKing killing Ice Warriors/Giants, they are fairly useful. For some reason you get them from PvP alot.

You could rationalize firemaking as a "log sink" in a similar way that construction and summoning are "money sinks." Fletching is a very popular skill. Before 07 you could make money even while buying the stuff. Even when you have to gather certain materials to make a profit, it' still turning items in gold.

Firemaking turns (at least) logs into...well, nothing. There's no reason to do so other that another 99 for trim, but it does serve the rationalized purpose 8-) .

Bows are log sinks aswell.

But thats besides the fact we don't REALLY need to destroy logs from the game. Theres a massive amount of logs comming into the game. One example is MTM. I get over 20k logs a week.
