Built A Computer! Pics Up on My MSN Space

Hey!

Well finally, my new computer has been built. I'm really happy/excited to have done this, and it turned out quite well. However, of course, I am now running into a few problems. It would be greatly appriciated if I could get these sorted out, so I know perhaps what I've done wrong, for next time.

1. Power issues - Sometimes my computer just wont start at all. I turn it on, nothing happens. The CPU fan spins like half a rotation, and stops. No power gets into anything at all. My front power pin cables are in fine, no problems there. I simply unscrewed my motherboard, and it worked fine after that. No problems. I screwed it back in slowly, and it wouldn't work after about the second screw. Whats going on? I can't continue like this running with a loose mobo!

2. USB!! OMG, this is a huge issue for me. I have 10 USB 2.0 Ports. 4 Are in the back mobo, 2 are front, and another 4 are from an add on PCI card. This has frustrated me soo much! My printer works fine on it, so does my wireless keyboard and mouse. My digital cameras also work fine. However, I ran into HUGE issues with my iPod. I plugged it in, and it blew the entire thing. My iPod wouldn't work, had to reset it, and my computer turned off. Just from simply plugging in. I tried all 10 USB ports, it did that with about 3 ports, and just didn't do anything at all with the other 7. Nothing. Plugged in, computer didn't recognize, iPod didn't turn on.

On my other computer, it auto recognized the iPod mini. On my laptop, it also auto recognized. But here, it does nothing.

My Lexar USB Jumpdrive also does not work. I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" error. Tried all 10 USB ports as well. I've tried rolling back the drivers, uninstalling, etc. In device manager, it tells me it's an unknown device, and no drivers are installed. I connected with Windows Update, nothing.

I'm running Windows XP Pro Sp2 btw, all updates are in.

I'll see about posting my pics as soon as these problems are resolved.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Pics are now up on My MSN Space. It's quite a bit of pics, and would be an amazing pain to upload all on imageshack, and post here. If you are interested in seeing my computer pics, room pics, and alla that, give me a pm anytime!

If not, heres a couple good pics.

Well it turned out both my iPod and Jumpdrive were defective. What are the odds...

So my USB problems have been resolved.

Power problems now...

I'm using:

AMD Athlon Xp 3000 (Socket A) Barton Core

AsRock K7S8X Motherboard

2 512 Cosair Ram

300 Watt Power Supply

80 Gig HD

52x CD Rw

3.5" Floppy

Premium Black 2531 ATX Mid Tower Case

Windows XP Pro Sp2

Also...most text on my computer is showing in Italics? How do I change this? Tip it font is fine, some websites are fine, others are italic. Google for instance, is italic. MSN Messenger is italic. Anything on my tool bar is in Italics. :x

Did I forget anything you need to know?

Thanks,

So with one screw in it works but not with 2? When you have it screwed in, is the computer oriented differently? i.e. when it's unscrewed you have the mobo horizontal and when screwed in vertical.

Yeah, its weird like that. Its EXACTLY the same, except for the screws. It worked with 6 screws in I think it was, then stopped. I took a few more screws out, and it worked fine. So I put the screws back, didnt work. Nothing has changed, except the amount of screws.

Try to isolate which screw is the problem. Don't take them all out. Take them out one by one. If it still doesn't turn on, put them back in, then move on to the next one. I bet that screw is making contact between 2 things that shouldn't be (in contact).

Great advice from the above, but you're going to have to do something if you find out what's happening, I suggest using a plastic washer made for mounting motherboards or a plastic stand off, either one that screws onto the baseplate or one that just props the board.

Examples of what you're looking for. :)

I'd also check to see if you've got enough current going to the board, sometimes a 300W power supply will just be under what you need nowadays. Recommended 350W+. :o

I use a 600W in mine and it still is under the recommended current for my board, it works... kinda. :D

Fastening the motherboard directly to the case without those plastic stand offs can cause permanent damage to your motherboard. Chances are the manual that came with it mentions that :|

And no, the chance that you will need a PSU with more than 300W is extremely small. There is also no way an x86 system with one or two processors would ever need more than 600W, assuming less than 20 harddrives and a vapochill or similar setups. However, wattage can be specified in different ways, either the maximum output or the average output. Hence no-name brand PSU's are quite likely to be trash, and thus a 600W PSU could be potentially be worse than a 250W one.

Quick advise: Tomorrow (6/16) is the last day of a promotional event at Best Buy (think there are best buys in canada). 160gb hard drive for 120 bucks - 80 dollars rebate so for a final costof 40 + tax. Very good for a new computer lol and its a pretty decent drive. 160gb, 7200rpm, 8mb cache and 9.8mz avg seek time

Start>Control Panel>Display>Appearance>Advanced Options

You should come across 2 options. Choose the bottom one about font. See if the Italics are already selected.

The problem with the gene pool is that there's no lifeguard.

Simple, you dont got enough power.

So maybe double your power supply.. Nothing wrong with too much power :)
