Kill_Life
Free-to-Play Mining Guide [Table of content] 1. Introduction 2. Pickaxes 3. Ores and others 4. Mining spots 5. Leveling 6. Superheating 7. Speed 8. Other facts 9. Random events [1. Introduction] First of all, Mining is a skill loved by many, but hated by the same amount of people. But hated or not, everyone should agree, this skill can get you rich! Mining has been around ever since Runescape (Runescape Classic), it's one of the oldest skills around and it's a non-combat skill. The "it's a non-combat skill" isn't true actually. Mining is one of the hardest combat skills around. It just doesn't give any combat levels. Why's that? You're pretty much always fighting with someone over a rock, to get the ore, as there is only one ore per rock. So, just like in combat, there's only one winner, and most of the time, several losers. [2. Pickaxes] (Click the names to check the price) - Bronze Pickaxe The starter pickaxe. You don't need to buy these (unless you're collecting them), you can get these for free because they spawn on a table in Falador. - Iron Pickaxe This pickaxe is slightly better than a bronze one. But I wouldn't recommand buying one. - Steel Pickaxe You need a mining level of six to be able to use this pickaxe. It's better than the Iron Pickaxe but not worth the money. - Mithril Pickaxe You need a mining level of 21 to be able to use this pickaxe. It's better than a steel one. It might be worth buying one. - Adamant Pickaxe You need a mining level of 31 to be able to use this pickaxe. It's better than a Mitrhil Pickaxe. If you don't have a Mithril Pickaxe, it might be worth buying one. If you already have a Mithril Pickaxe, I wouldn't advice buying this one. - Rune Pickaxe The Alpha and the Omega. The Rune Pickaxe. You need a mining level of 41 to be able to use this pickaxe. It's the best pickaxe of all, better than all the above. Get it! No matter if you have any of the above pickaxes. As soon as you have 41 mining, get a Rune Pickaxe! [3. Ores & Others] - Clay This little guy is quite popular because it's easy to mine and sells for quite a lot of coins considered the effort. They are also used to train crafting in it's early stages. They give five experience each. You need a mining level of one to mine these. - Rune Essence You can only mine these after completing the Rune Mysteries-Quest. They are popular because they are used for runecrafting and they sell for quite a lot, considering the effort and mining speed. They give five experience each. You need a mining level of one to mine these. - Tin Ore A fairly easy-to-mine ore. Not the perfect ore to earn money with, but for starting players, it pays the bills. They give 17.5 experience each. You need a mining level of one to mine these. - Copper Ore Again, a fairly easy-to-mine ore. Again, it pays the bills for newer players. They give 17.5 experience each. You need a mining level of one to mine these. - Iron Ore A popular ore, often used for powermining. You're able to mine it fast, and the ore respawns fast. Also mined by many to sell or to create Steel Bars on their own. They give 35 experience each. You need a mining level of 15 to mine these. - Silver Ore A not-so-popular ore. There aren't many of them in the Free-to-Play world. Often only mined by players who want to use them to train Crafting. They give 40 experience each. You need a mining level of 20 to mine these. - Coal Again, a very popular ore. It can also be found all around Runescape. There's a high demand for this ore. You need it to smelt all medium and high-leveled bars. The experience/respawn rate from mining these isn't bad either. They give 50 experience each. You need a mining level of 30 to mine these. - Gold Ore There aren't many places where you can mine this Ore, but it's semi-popular since it sells for lots of coins. It's sometimes mined by players who want to train their crafting with it. They give 65 experience each. You need a mining level of 40 to mine these. - Mithril Ore A popular ore, often mined by players who just got 55 mining, and often think it's great experience. Mithril isn't great experience, the respawn speed is too slow and it takes quite a while to mine it. It's main use is for selling, or to create your own Mithril Bars and train smithing. They give 80 experience each. You need a mining level of 55 to mine these. - Adamantite Ore A semi-popular ore. Semi, simply because not that many players have 70 Mining. This ore is bad to level on, because it respawns slow and can take quite a while to mine. But it can be sold for a nice amount of coins. It's often mined to smelt/smith it yourself. They give 95 experience each. You need a mining level of 70 to mine these. - Runite Ore When you think about Runite Ore, you think about cash! This popular ore is often mined to sell, since it's worth a lot of coins! The downside is: it's a very rare ore, it respawns slow, it can take a while before it's mined and it's found at the top of Wilderness. They give 125 experience each. You need a mining level of 85 to mine these. [4. Mining Spots] - Clay There is two good spots to mine Clay. The first and perhaps the easiest spot can be found slightly south of Varrock. There are quite a lot clay spots and there is a bank close to it: Varrock West Bank. [spot] [Map] The second spot can be found in the Crafting Guild. But you need 40 Crafting to enter it. There's a nice amount of Clay. The closest bank can be found in Falador, but that bank isn't that close. [spot] [Map] - Rune Essences There's only one good spot to mine this: Varrock. You need to have completed the Rune Mysteries-Quest. You can access the Rune Essence Mine by talking to Aubury, south of the Varrock East Bank. He runs the Rune Shop. The closest bank is the Varrock East Bank. [spot] [Map] - Tin Ore & Copper Ore There are two 'main spots' where you can mine these ores. The first one can be found in the Lumbridge Swamp. Close to the Mining Tutor. It provides a nice amount of Tin Ore and Copper Ore. The closest bank is in Lumbridge Castle, which isn't too far. [spot] [Map] The second one can be found slightly south of Varrock. This spot contains even more Copper Ore and Tin Ore than the Lumbridge Swamp, together with a small amount of Iron Ore. There's also a bank closeby: The Varrock East Bank. It contains more high-leveled miners than the Lumbridge Swamp. [spot] [Map] ** - Iron Ore There are several nice spots to mine Iron Ore. The first one can be found where Tin Ore and Copper Ore are mined, slightly south of Varrock. (See above) This is a nice spot, close to a bank, but it's often crowded. The second spot can be found in Al-Kharid. There's a mine filled with Scorpions. (These are agressive untill you are level 29! So be careful!) There's a nice place to mine Iron Ore, often used to 'powermine'. The closest bank are Al-Karid and the Duel Arena Bank Chest. [spot] [2] [Map] The third spot is the Dwarven Mine. Players with 60 Mining or up can access this mine trough the Mining Guild. Others will have to use the stairs in a house in Falador. There's a nice place, with a nice amount of Iron Ore. This place is often used to 'powermine'. Be careful, there are a lot of agressive Scorpions! [spot] [Map] Iron Ore spots in general are often populated. - Silver Ore There are two good places to mine Silver Ore. The first one can be found in Al-Kharid. There are several Silver Ore spots. The closest banks are Al-Kharid and the Duel Arena Bank Chest. [spot] [Map] The second spot can be found in the Crafting Guild. Again, you need 40 Crafting to enter it. The closest bank is Falador. [spot] [Map] - Coal There are many places to mine this highly wanted good. The first place is in the Lumbridge Swamp, close to the Wizard Tower. There are several spots of Coal. The closest bank is in Draynor Village, which isn't too far. [spot] [Map] The second one is the Mining Guild. It can be found in Falador. The closest bank is the Falador East Bank. There's a lot of coal! But it can be extremely populated. You need 60 mining to enter this guild. [spot] [Map] There are several other smaller spots. These are less ideal because of the long walk to the bank or the small amount of coal. - Gold Ore There's only one really good spot to mine gold ore: The Crafting Guild. It's far from a bank and populated. [spot] [Map] - Mithril Ore There are some nice spots to mine this. The bad point about this is the long wait for it to come back. In Al-Kharid is the first spot. There are only two rocks, but for Mithril Ore, this is good enough when you World-Hop or mine other ores while waiting. The closest bank is either Al-Kharid or the Duel Arena Bank Chest. [spot] [2] [Map] Another one can be found in the Lumbridge Swamp, close to the Wizard Tower. This place has five mithril rocks and it's close to a bank. This is a popular spot, meaning there are lots of miners. [spot] [Map] There is also Crandor Isle. You need to have started the Dragon Slayer-quest to access this piece of land. There are eight mithril ores! The bad part is: it's far from the bank, and you need to have started the Dragon Slayer-Quest. Because of this, there aren't many people mining those ores. [spot] [Map] There are also two ores in the Dwarven Mine (close to the mining guild). The bad part is, these are often mined. Together with them, there are five ores in the mining guild. And again, these are very often mined. [spot] [Map] - Adamantite Ore There are some spots to mine this ore. Keep in mind, it can take a long time before it's mined and it respawns slow. The first place is Al-Kharid. There are two Adamantite Ore rocks. The closest banks are Al-Kharid and the Duel Arena Bank Chest. [spot] [Map] There are two rocks in the Edgeville Mine aswell. The closest bank is the Grand Exchange, if you have a key to open the door. There are also several agressive monsters. It's a nice spot overall, but not adviced for lower levels. [spot] [Map] The third spot can be found in Lumbridge Swamp, close to the Wizard Tower. There are two adamantite rocks. And there is a close bank nearby. This is a very good spot (and sometimes, very popular which means it can be crowded). The closest bank is the one in Draynor Village. [spot] [Map] Another spot is outside the mining guild. There are three rocks, which is nice. But it's close to the mining guild, which means they are often mined. The closest bank is the Falador East Bank. [spot] [Map] The last spot is Crandor Isle. There are three adamantite rocks. But as said for the mithril ore rocks, it's far from a bank. There are also several agressive monsters and you need to have started the Dragon Slayer-Quest. [spot] [Map] - Runite Ore There's only one place to mine Runite Ore: The top of Wilderness! I's a dangerous place, with many risks but the reward is big aswell! The closest bank is the Bounty Hunter bank. [spot] [Map] - Wilderness The wilderness is a good place for many things. Mining is one of them. The bad part: It's very, very dangerous. There is one bank in the Wilderness: The Bounty Hunter Bank. The Hobgloblin Mine is a very beautiful mining place. Too bad it's crowded with agressive level 28 Hobgoblins. It's awesome for powermining, since there are several iron ore rocks. There are 30+ coal rocks, 19 mithril ore rocks and eight adamantite ore rocks! As you can see, it holds an enourmous amount of good ores. [spot] [Map] Another good spot, not too deep in Wilderness is the Skeleton Mine. This place is swamped with agressive skeletons but holds over 30 coal! [spot] [Map] ** There is also Blurite Ore, but except for one quest, it has zero use in Free-To-Play. Because it's worth nothing (can't be sold, can't be smithed, bad experience, far from a bank) it isn't included in this guide. [5. Leveling] Here comes a guide on getting your mining level up. All players start with level one mining, and depending on how active you were on Tutorial Island, you'll have one to three mining when you leave that place. I'll assume you have level one mining. Now, many players give the advice to mine some Tin Ore and Copper Ore untill you reach level 15 and mine Iron Ore from there. NO! As I said in the introduction: Mining is a player-versus-player skill. There's only one winner and many losers. You are level one mining with a bronze pickaxe, chances of you being that loser are very high. You barely stand a chance. Luckely, there is a place where there are no losers. And you only need level one mining for it. I'm talking about: The Rune Essence Mine. You need to complete the Rune Mystery-quest first, but that's a simple one. Click here if you need a guide to complete it. Anywho, there are an infinite amount of Rune Essences, so there are no losers. Everyone can mine it at the same time and everyone gets Rune Essences. So, untill you are a big player, I advice you to mine these untill you are level 41 mining. Untill level 21, I'd advice you to use your bronze pickaxe. It isn't much worse than a steel pickaxe. At level 21, you have the option to use a mithril pickaxe. I advice you to get this one. You should have mined around 1000 Rune Essences, so you should be able to buy one. Continue mining Rune Essences. At level 31, you can use an adamant pickaxe. I don't advice buying one, but if you want, you can. You should have mined another 1950 Rune Essences by now. So you should be able to afford an adamant pickaxe if you want. Continue mining Rune Essence untill you are level 41 mining. You should have mined another 5300 Rune Essences now. At level 41 mining, you can use a rune pickaxe. Let me correct the sentence above: At level 41 mining, you must use a rune pickaxe. Buy one, two, three, it doesn't matter, use it! Congratulations, you are a big player now, and you weren't a loser. You can mine some important ores already: coal, iron ore, gold ore. Gold isn't good to train on, coal and iron ore on the other hand are good to train on. You can mine some coal in the places I said above for some money. (Lumbridge Swamp for example.) This should earn you some nice money.Another option is 'powermining'. It's very simple: Go to an iron ore spot (Al-Kharid or the Dwarven mine are nice.) mine the ores and drop them. You are able to mine iron ore in a few seconds and it comes back really fast. It gives you fast experience, but no money. If you want the money, bank the ores instead of dropping them. Congratulations, you just reached level 55 mining! You can mine mithril ore! Woohoo! Or not... Like I said above, this is bad to train on. It respawns slow and takes a while before it's mined and there are too many players around level 55 mining who are fooled by it. Only mine it if you need it for money or smithing. Else, stick with the coal or iron ore. Congratulations, you just reached level 60 mining! What? I can't mine any new ores at level 60?! You can't, but you can enter the mining guild! It's coal-heaven! From here, either continue with the iron ore (which is still the fastest and will remain the fastest method) or mine coal in the mining guild (warning: can get populated). Congratulations, you just reached level 70 mining! Adamantite ore! Again, only mine it if you need it for money or smithing. It's even worse then smithing in both ways: slower respawn, slower mining. But hey, it's some nice money. Congratulations, you just reached level 75 mining! What, no new ores? Nothing new? Indeed not! But you reached it! Congratulations! Keep mining iron ore or coal. Or mithril ore and adamantite ore if you're selling/using it. Just know it's bad experience. Congratulations, you just reached level 80 mining! Again, no new ores. But your mining level starts with 8 now! You're getting closer to level 85 mining, and you think you're almost there, only five more levels. Well... You aren't! From level 80 to level 85 mining, you need another 1.27 million mining experience. This means, you only completed 61% of your road to level 85 mining. Meaning you need another 39%. I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm just being realistic. But don't give up! Quitters exist, but you aren't one of them. Keep mining iron ore or coal, or again, adamantite ore or mithril ore if you need it (it's bad experience, but it's experience). Congratulations, you just reached level 85 mining! Runite ore! You go girl! You're male? Get a gender change! You don't want to, oké... You go boy! You can mine this ore for money and money only. It's bad experience, but awesome money for a free-to-play player. Everyone who denies that, doesn't know this game. Now, the road is open for level 99 mining. Good luck! [6. Superheating] Superheating is a way to mine longer without banking, meaning you'll get more experience. Usually, you mine coal with this technique. What do you need for Superheating: - Level 43 Magic - A Fire Staff - Nature Runes - Ores (Iron ore, Mithril ore, Adamantite ore, Runite ore) - A smithing level, the one you need to create bars, the type of ore you're taking: * If you take iron ore, you need level 30 smithing. * If you take mithril ore, you need level 55 smithing. * If you take adamantite ore, you need level 70 smithing. * If you take runite ore, you need level 85 smithing. You wield the fire staff, have a pickaxe in you inventory, together with the nature runes and the rest of the inventory, you fill with ores. You leave some spots open for the coal you're mining, equal to the amount of coal you need to create a bar. Here are two examples of an inventory: Mithril inventory Adamantite inventory You simply mine the coal (the mining guild is good) and superheat it to bars. This way, you can mine a lot longer. You have 28 inventory spots. Minus two for the nature runes and the pickaxe, that leaves you with 26. - Iron ore: You can take 24 iron ore (leave two spots for coal), which means you can mine 48 coal before you need to bank. - Mithril ore: You can take 22 mithril ore (leave four spots for coal), which means you can mine 88 coal before you need to bank. - Adamantite ore: you take 20 adamantite ore (leave six spots for coal), which means you can mine 120 coal before you need to bank. - Runite ore: you take 18 runite ore (leave eight spots for coal), which means you can mine 144 coal before you need to bank. [7. Speed] Now, speed. Speed is important, it decides if you get the ore or not. Mining speed: (I assume you'll be using a rune pickaxe.) For Rune Essences, clay, tin ore, copper ore and iron ore, your mining speed is almost always the same. You mine it rather fast. For coal, the speed is more random. You will often mine it rather fast when you're have a higher mining level, but in most cases, the speed for mining it is random. Mithril ore, adamantite ore and runite ore, your speed is completely random. You can get the ore in one swing, or it takes a minute and up before you have it. A higher mining level helps, but only a little, most of the time, it's luck. To show this luck: Someone was mining adamantite ore with a rune pickaxe, someone with a bronze pickaxe stepped in and mined it before she did: she didn't have much luck. Respawn speed: This isn't about luck, it comes back. The only thing I can say about it is: The more populated the world is (meaning the more players is contains), the faster the ore comes back. So powermining is good in populated worlds, but it has the biggest chance of competition. [8. Other facts] - The mining guild in a PvP World is safe (you can't get pked) but to go to the bank, there's a high chance to die. Falador is popular and it's multi-combat. - It doesn't hurt being polite. I don't mine a coal rock when someone else is mining it and often, they leave me alone. If they don't, I just mine their rocks aswell. - Mining can get boring. Watch television, listen to music, talk to friends, write a guide (yes, I wrote this guide while mining), ... DON'T use an autoclicker. If you do, I hope you get banned. - There's nothing wrong with having crazy mining goals, as long as you have fun. Go for it! It's so much fun when you complete them! [9. Random Events] Mining contains some random events. Some are nice, some aren't. Here's a list: - There are the all-day random events. These give junk, or some nice gems. You might get a genie (good), an exam (good), a dwarf (bad), a swarm (bad), an evil chicken (evil), Rick (bad, unless he gives gems), a pirate (bad, unless he gives gems), Miles or one of his brothers (bad, unless he gives gems), sandwich lady (bad, if you take something what you couldn't take, she'll try to kill you with a baguette (must be an old one) and you'll wake up in a strange place. Who knows what she did while you were passed out.), and the list continues. - Split pickaxe: Your pickaxe splits, boohoo. Simply take the top off the ground and attach it back to your pickaxe. - Smoking rocks: Smoking kills, we already know that, this one confirmes it once again. If you mine a rock while it smokes, your pickaxe will be damaged (meaning it's useless) and you'll get hit. To repair the pickaxe, talk to Bob (the axe-seller) in Lumbridge. - Rock Golem: A huge beast which will attack you. It uses melee and ranged. Just run away and it'll disappear. - Gems: something nice. While mining, there's a random chance you will get a gem (a sapphire, an emerald, a ruby or a diamond). I hope this guide was helpful. 3PointMan
Just Finished Reading It. I love this. All your FtP guides are amazing. You might want to add the Hobgoblin Wild mine and the mine in rimmington. They are useless for regular mining, but I powermine at both of them, as they are empty. http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt206/samtheninja/Tags/FEARLESStag.jpg http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy156/song4thedeaf/stuff.png what i'm doing now: https://linktr.ee/student1

Sad. :wall: Spelling error: (in bold) Congratulations, you just reached level 85 mining! Runite ore! You go girl! You're male? Get a gender change! You don't want to, oké... You go boy! You can mine this ore for money and money only. It's abd experience, but awesome money for a free-to-play player. Everyone who denies that, doesn't know this game. RSBDavid
Wow  Thats all I can say. You write very good guides Kill_Life.It is in an easy to understand format. Although a lot of the information is common knowledge to me, it will help out newer players alot. Cup Lion
I read through all of it, and I'll say, it was a joy to read. Your humor, and writing style makes it very easy to understand. It's a great guide. Oh, and I learned something new, despite having 76 mining. The whole beginning level one start, when you suggest mining Rune Essence. It's brilliant! You can easily make up for the missed smithing exp from not mining tin and copper and smithing through The Knight's Sword Quest. I wish I would have known that when I started my account. EDIT: I began superheating in the mining guild, when I realized how difficult it is to keep superheating when you get a gem. Would it be notable to make one extra inventory space open just in case of a gem? |Signature by Jason321|
pka7
Quitters excist, but you aren't one of them. Exist* Good guide. Add Rimmington as a power mining spot though, it's a relatively vacant spot most of the time. Something I had a problem with was the green font though. It was a little tough to read and I often found myself highlighting the text in order to read what was written. Other than that though, your guide is a good one.
Inuashakent
Since nobody gave you CC so far, I guess I'll start with the one that really caught my eye. The green titles makes it extremely hard to read (at least for me)... I had to squint. You say that it's not worth buying Iron/Steel/etc, but if you take time/cost into consideration, it's clear that you should DEFINETELY buy these picks. A F2P'er could easily make 100k+/hour, and the pickaxes would save enough time to be worth the costs. You said that Mining is a competetive skill, so why wouldn't you buy them? I liked your take on mining as a competetive skill, as it is true. You failed to mentioned many important aspects, such as how overrated coal truly is for money/exp (like you did for coal). However, this can be ignored because your guide seems to be taking a more relaxed approach, and not a hardcore one (with all numbers). This is a guide that will definetely shed some light on many of the misconceptions of the F2Pers. Definetely good job.   [Summoning guide (AOW)] [Slayer guide] [Melee & Brawl player]
Grasle
Great guide. Just some minor grammar errors: - Split pickaxe: You pickaxe splits, boohoo. Simply take the top of the ground and attack it back to your pickaxe. - Split pickaxe: Your pickaxe splits, boohoo. Simply take the top off the ground and attach it back to your pickaxe. Kill_Life
Thanks all for fixing the grammar mistakes. Since nobody gave you CC so far, I guess I'll start with the one that really caught my eye. The green titles makes it extremely hard to read (at least for me)... I had to squint. It depends which style you are using. It can be hard when you use the Tip.It Theme. I might change that. That's a personal opinion. I don't see the use in buying iron or steel. You should mine rune essences. From 1 to 21 is +/- 1000 essences which can easely be obtained with a bronze pickaxe. Again, it's a personal choise. I liked your take on mining as a competetive skill, as it is true. You failed to mentioned many important aspects, such as how overrated coal truly is for money/exp (like you did for coal). I have no idea how it is for p2p, but coal isn't overrated in f2p. It IS the second best for experience after iron ore. The money is quite nice aswell. Compared to other moneymaking techniques. About the money: it all depends how big 'much' or 'decent' money is. For some 100k is much. For others 5 mill isn't much. However, this can be ignored because your guide seems to be taking a more relaxed approach, and not a hardcore one (with all numbers). This is a guide that will definetely shed some light on many of the misconceptions of the F2Pers. Definetely good job.   Quitters excist, but you aren't one of them. EDIT: I began superheating in the mining guild, when I realized how difficult it is to keep superheating when you get a gem. Would it be notable to make one extra inventory space open just in case of a gem? Keeping an extra spot open for a gem is useless imo. If you keep a spot open, you might get 0 gems, meaning you wasted a spot. Or you might get two gems, meaning you should leave even more spots open. I've gotten three gems once in one inventory (meaning on 25 rocks). You shouldn't bet on the gems. If you think the gem is worth more than the ore, drop one and keep the gem. You can mine the same ore a time later. "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"[Currently playing: K1ll L1f3]
tripsis
I agree that you should change the green because the Tip.it style is the default one and everything should be compatible with the default skin ;) You probably only need to change the shade though, if you want to keep green. Great guide! The "Leveling" section was a real laugh! The_Maddest
I got to lv 60 mining just so that I could enter all the F2P guilds. This guide may make me raise it a little more! Nah, I never liked mining anyway. It's a good guide -- I'd like to see more pictures inside the guide rather than just links. Hide tags would be good too. Oh and if I ever mined, it would be for the money, so money/hour calculations would be great. Xp/hour would be good too, including magic xp/hour when superheating. Cup Lion
If there is no competition at the essence mine, why waste money and time getting a little better pickaxe, when you will be able to use a much better one (mithril) in a matter of minutes? |Signature by Jason321|
Youmu
I'm sorry to bump this guide but I want to add some things to it. -The Karamja Volcano Gold Mine contains 4 gold rocks, and can be an alternative to mining gold if you do not have 40 crafting. -The Steel Mine, located in level 7 wildy, is a great spot to powermine iron. If you wish to bank the ores, Edgeville is the closest bank. -The Rimmington Mine, located slightly north of Rimmington, is another alternate spot for powermining iron. It is also a good spot for clay. -If you are mining in Lumbridge Swamp, Crandor, or Karamja Volcano, ALWAYS wear the Explorer's ring 3. This can save a good amount of time to Draynor bank. -Always bring a chisel in your inventory. When you mine a gem, cut it, then drop it again. Other than that, nice guide! dotadanatic
You mentioned that the speed at which iron is mined is relatively constant whereas for coal, it is more random. If I want to go powermining, should I go for iron or coal assuming my mining level is about 50+

Monk
* If you take mithril ore, you need level 55 smithing. The smithing level for mithril is 50. [spoiler=Quotes]Goddammit Monk, stop being so full of win.I am Monk's [bleep]
