I've recently had a couple pop-ups prompting me to download Antivirus 2009 because my computer "is infected." I'm well aware that this itself is a virus. :roll: The first time I got this pop-up I basically panicked and click the X button on the popup, which would have brought me right to the site; thankfully, McAfee saved me and and quarantined the virus I would have recieved. I'm pretty sure I was on Internet Explorer when that happened. I got another pop-up of it today and went to Task Manager and closed Firefox. I didn't have any further problem.

 

 

 

My question is, is there a virus or spyware itself that is causing these popups? I scanned with McAfee yesterday (that's what my dad bought, it wasn't my choice -.- ) and nothing was found. I tried to install AVG free just a moment ago, but it recommended me not to because I already had McAfee installed. Should I be worried?

Doesn't sound like a problem, a more experience tech person could tell you on the spot, but I need more details to diagnose the problem. What site were you visiting at the time? Did the pop up appear shortly after the page loaded, and were there any warnings from IE or Firefox that a pop-up was blocked? The Netflix pop-up on tip.it's homepage is reported as blocked by Firefox for me, but it still gets through. If there were no warnings, you likely have something inside your computer causing this. Either way, it is safe to close the window as long as you make sure the X button is outside the actual web page. I'll try to post again if you give some more details.

I had something similar happen to me, turned out it was from a malware called "Virtumonde." My advice is get a program like Spybot S&D and scan, it should find if you have anything serious like that.

Antivirus 2009 is a malicious fake antivirus scanner. If you had been to Windows update last month (like you should every month) this would be gone by now ;) .

 

 

 

Anyway download Malwarebytes. This will remove the whole program and everything that has to do with it. It's free. Make sure you update the definitions before scanning.

I just downloaded Malware Bytes now. Don't have much time for now so I'm going to do a quick scan; will most likely do a full scan later. :)

Yep, a trojan was found. Here's the pic of the scan results:

 

 

I'm going to close all applications now to get rid of the thing.

 

 

 

EDIT: Right when I was posting this my computer decided to randomly turn off. :wall: :wall: This happens for whatever reason after long periods of use, and it was on all day scanning. [bleep]. Well, the Zlob trojan was found after doing a full scan which took 4 hours. I'm just gonna do a quick scan to see if it find it now. If not I'll just do the full scan again. -.-

The quick scan may not remove it fully. Always do a full scan.

 

 

 

Your other problem with the computer shutting off is do to overheating. Most likely the processor overheating. Open another thread and people can help you with that. One thing at a time though, get this spyware issue straightened out first.

You must have a newer version of that malware then. Malwarebytes is the only program that I know that removes it.

 

 

 

Your going to have to boot into safe mode. Start your computer and while it's starting repeatedly press the f8 key till you see a screen that has the option for safe mode on it. Choose safe mode and then scan with malwarebytes in safe mode.

On an iPod touch now as I don't have access to the computer, but I'll try that tomorrow. Did you have this specific trojan? And if so, did you have to restart your computer to get rid of them? :-k

I did not have to boot into safe mode to remove this specific threat before. However, the anitvirus 2009 malware has many different strains and probably blocks the removal while running. That's why you should boot to safemode.

 

 

 

I've use malwarebytes probably 20 times to remove this specific spyware and they are were a little different. (I work in pc repair which is why I have done this so many times)

Alright, I scanned in safe mode - however, it still says that I need to restart. If I click the restart option it gives me, I restart back in the "normal" mode (not sure what you'd call it). Should I be pressing F8 while it restarts?

 

 

 

EDIT: An extra bit of information, it says the trojan is located on my dad's user section on the computer - however, I'm still scanning on my section and it's finding it. Does this make any difference?

It means that your virus software is scanning the whole system, that;s why it'f finding it.

It's probably just simple overheating; but it's not a problem really.

 

 

 

As for the virus problem, it's still unsolved (see my last post), but it's not causing me any issues as far as I know. No popups since I posted the thread.
