Limited trial for f2p...could it happen!?

Recommended Posts

After posting twice on topics by f2p people, I thought of something interesting. What if, someday, JAGeX implemented a limited trial period on f2p? This is not something I think should happen, I'm just curious if anyone thinks it would. Think about this...

1-You try out runescape as f2p

2-You play a lot and enjoy the game, but realize you want more to do

3-You become a member, either by coughing up the five bucks or begging your parents :)

Now, this is what keeps JAGeX in business. And, despite the are many people who are f2p who never plan on turning p2p, I assume they're doing fine. How many other games have an unlimited free trial? Not many, I assume. So, the question remains, can you see JAGeX ever deciding to, maybe being forced to, implement a limit to the free trial?

I'm p2p, but I have just as much respect for f2p people as p2p, by the way. It was just something I was curious about. Sorry if it's a scary thought to all the f2p people out there :)

That's going to be a VERY long trial, say at least 3/4 to 1 year. If it's only like a 1 week trial then i wouldn't even play the game. Nor would anyone else i bet, considering the other 50+ mmorpg's with much better graphics and gameplay that i know of. Not saying that runescape sucks, but you know what i mean. Just can't see it happening, ever.

just a joke.. right?! please! nooooo!

anyway, if they implemented it now theyd lose half their customers (as well as most of their potential customers in the way of p2pers-to-be)

plus, id have to put my complain' hat on.

people before me are right. If they made a trial period, of almost any length under a year, they would see a major drop in new subscriptions. a week or month isnt long enough to get hooked on runescape, or to do all there is to do in f2p. Plus, how would it work? f2p as we know would be over, since every day people would finish their trial. the f2p worlds would be emptier, and the economy would be shot, since there wouldnt be any people with high stats. A trial period would hurt jagex mroe than help it. It will enver happen.

Are any of these other games free? Just curious.

I would say the time it took for me to be really "hooked" was one month.

I disagree entirely with the people who posted that the trial would be a year...because if you've been playing for a year, hell...just admit it, you're not planning on paying to play anytime soon.

Personally, it disgusts me when people take advantage of the free worlds, never intend to leave, and then proceed to BEG that free players get member benefits. These are no more than leeches in my eyes, and I feel that they shouldn't even get the chance to play such a wonderful game.

Now, if it wasn't also a problem of people not getting to pay to play due to payment methods (the ones who TRULY cannot pay due to where they live, no credit method, etc etc) then I'd be all for maybe a 6 month trial...but it IS a problem, and so a trial shouldn't be inplemented.

I'm not sticking up for all f2p's in general in the slightest...I'm sticking up for the member-worthy free players that just simply cannot pay due to circumstances out of their control.

jagex would never do this because how many other games do have a free trial lots but unlimited and jagex servers would go out cus all people would have to do is keep makeing new accts and therefore jagex would go out of business cus if they put a trial on it i know lots of nonmem that would stop playing cus noone wants to be a member untill they get a highenough lvl also so ulmitatally if jagex did this i think they would go out of business

What would be the point to keep having to make new accounts over and over and over and over?

I don't think people would make another account...they would just quit, or pay for membership. Now while I feel many people take advantage of f2p servers, I also have a brain, and know that if a time limit was set forth, not just the "noobs" would be affected, but the innocent people with a reasonable cause would catch the flames too.

i'm sure they would not do a trial, becuase a huge mumber of people turn p2p, and the ones that dont, so? they have alot of members already, they should let the people to have fun with the game as long as people want, i'm sure that some day i will becuame a member, alot of people do

That's nicely said. I forgot about the people who can't pay due to location and such. About the other free games mentioned, are they also online? And is the software also free? Do you consider those games better than RS?

Yes yes yes, they are ALL free. SOME of them, however, use an item shop, which allows you to buy certain items, (speed up, attack increase, etc) that you cannot get from the game. Yes, their graphics are 100 times better, yes their music is 100 times better, and yes their all online. But for some, their pc specs can't match up to these games, so they play runescape instead. IMO, i don't think the majority of gamers around the world have a FAIRLY good pc, and it's not their problem. To them, runescape would probably be the best choice for a game. I'm not saying that ALL people who have a good computer play other games than runescape. I'm not also saying that runescape is probably the crappiest game ever, and only people with low end comps play it. I'm simply saying that IF there was a trial, not many would bother to play runescape. I suggest that you check some of those games out. I don't think you can post links in this forum, so once again, ill give you the names of it and you can type it in google.

Jeeze no one thinks now adays..f2p *IS* a trial..that's it! You get as long as you want..people just presum because it's a free part of the game it's not a trial..it is..that could all very well be members and f2p get a week total i mean they have enough subcribers to survive without f2p now there we go! I sorted this thread in a paragraph. :P

I don't see why there should be a trial, some people prefer to build their characters up before become a member(this takes time). I realise you may be worried about people just "leeching" off Runescape by constantly playing f2p but there are enough members and the number of members is increasing so I don't think there is any need for concern. That's just my thought and I am aware I could be completely wrong :P

Nah I can't see Jagex implement a limit on the 'trial'. This tactic has payed them off very well and I'm sure they'll keep it for that reason. Not to mention that removing F2P now would create a lot of problems.. Don't forget that only 20-25% of the players are actually P2P.

Unless RuneScape is gonna go downwards in player base within a few years, and the rate of P2Pers:F2Pers is dropping too significantly at that time (jagex making a loss), I don't see why they would or should remove F2P.

To kaibini: Most of the games you named are not as great as you say (or addictive?), and most of them have a (very) small player base and relatively a lot of problems with bugs and inbalanced gameplay. Also, I'm not sure if all of those will stay F2P as some are mainly F2P because they are still in alpha/beta testing fase.

Just to clarify, I never said I was worried about f2p "leeching" or anything like that. It just occured to me one day that people could play f2p forever and still have a pretty cool time at it. I'm not of the opinion that it should change, I just wondered if it ever would.

Neat stat. How'd you figure that?

lpinkus

Calculated it by using the number of servers. Seeing the amount of people playing per server is about the same on F2P as on P2P this number should be quite accurate. I also remember hearing figures of 1mil active player accounts when there were about 250K members half a year ago.

(total number of servers is 84 of which 33 are members. Which means 28% members)

The precise number is probably a bit lower because I'm sure that on average P2Pers spend more hours/day on the game then F2Pers.

Even the so-called "leechers" do more than just use bandwidth. They can reccomend RuneScape to friends who may wind up paying. Another thing, free players often make the game more enjoyable for members. For example I could just quit RuneScape and go play EQ or something if I really wanted, but one of the big reasons I don't is because my friends and family (who are all lousy no-good leechers ;)) play RuneScape, and I enjoy chatting and going to events and such with them.

No, most,(i know some for sure), will stay F2p. They will only use an item shop that allows you to buy items you can't get in the game, but the items are such as speed ups, temp atk increase, etc...Yes, they are in alpha/beta phase, but even so, IF runescape were to have a trial, the people who can't, or just don't want to pay for runescape will resort to those games, other than play a Java based game with "ok" graphics. I went to alot of the "big" game forums, and whenever runescape is mentioned, well, I guess the author gets a flame attack. Yes, the gameplay might not be as good as runescape, and i'll give it that, and only that. Those Koreans who create those fancy graphics, splendid music, and crap gameplay are improving I guess. They just need to get the lvling system a little easier, and more gameplay  . Probably THE best 3D MMORPG made by koreans is ROSE online. Although it's combat based as most other Korean games, there are just so much choice of weapons and armor, and things to do. It doesn't make you do 50 million clicks to enough money for good weapon. (Another flaw for korean games, the way to make money is just TOO hard, as getting drops from monsters is the only way to make money). I guess you could call that a milestone for those koreans. The reason runescape is fun is because there's so much to do, and is probably the only game i know that nearly reflects "real life". (Another reason i quit runescape is because it's becoming more of an afterschool hangout, or a second life for me. But maybe not for some, or most of you). I still play games now, but not as much, and addicted. The only game i play now is gunzonline(mmofps), which is really fun. I'm trying to stay away from MMORPG's, which just takes up too much of my time.

Sup noobs.
