Butterfly Commission.

Recommended Posts

Using this stock: http://heimito.deviantart.com/art/3-Vec ... s-78111501

Got commissioned to design some butterfly's and a program for a funeral.

Kinda morbid, but whatever.

I have to make 4 of them, blue, green, white, and brown.

Nothing special in terms of technique, just cell shading and adding texture.

Colors/textures are not final, I'm just trying to rough it to see how it will look with the techniques used.

workinprogress2ny9.jpg

workinprogress1nu9.jpg

P.S.

Don't [bleep] at me for using those stocks. read the description.

"3 Beautiful Vector Butterflies. Feel free to use them how ever you want."

Commissions like this need fast output, which doesn't give me time to design from scratch.

Meh. Colored filters over a butterfly image? That you apparently didn't make yourself....

...I just don't see much effort put into it. Sure you apparently "didn't have much time to work on it" but still... hell, I could've done that myself. I mean, people are paying for these, right?

If you don't have anything suggestions/advice then bug off. Which apparently you have none.

Instead of posting what I already said in my first post, and getting your post count up.

I didn't ask for crits, and I stated I didn't make the vector resource. (Resources are meant to be used by the way)

So if you wanna go ahead and show me up and do one yourself that isn't a pixel. (Pixels wont fly in the print world)

Go for it.

Also, no filters were used. So please, unless you know what your talking about, refrain from trying to tell me what I did.

Exactly why I rarely post here anymore, I get told stuff from people who strictly make signatures, an know nothing more.

Chill out... Hes just saying that your telling us that you took some the vectors someone took time to make and covered them in some colour... You dont want C/C so why even post them? We know the all you did was take some pretty brushes in some different colours and say POOF ART !

Im honestly glad you dont post here very often, the Gallery is a place to learn, and you just go tearing people open when they point out a flaw or mistake.

So seriously, just gtfo.

I didn't use any brushes either, so what does that say about you. (you have no idea what your talking about)

Your right he is saying I took some vectors, but guess what.... I stated that in my first post.

Why repeat it.

He Didn't point out a flaw or a mistake, because there are none. (although some things can be refined)

He was discriminating me for using resources that were made available for people to use.

That, is called being a [bleep], and pointing out the obvious.

You have no authority to tell me to get out. So deal with it.

So what exactly did you do then? Just ask someone to colour it in for you so you could sell it?

And remind me why you even posted it if you werent looking for C/C

Looking for the glory that no one is willing to give to you?

My point was, it didn't look like you did much, and virtually the same results could be gotten with the application of a few filters or brushes. When you post something in the Gallery, assume it will be critiqued. That's what this place is for, and if you can't take it, then don't post.

Furthermore, assume makes an [wagon] out of you and me.

A)You assumed that I only do pixel art.

B)Why does it matter if it "won't fly in the print world"??

C)Far much more work goes into a pixel than a borrowed vector with brushes applied on top of it.

D) I know you didn't make the vector. I know resources are to be used. But you don't just slap some stuff on a resource, call it art, and them make someone pay for it. That isn't cool.

E)Sure your time is limited. But if you can't make something worth the customer's time in the allotted time limit then don't take the commission.

He Didn't point out a flaw or a mistake, because there are none.

 Do you really, really, really, REALLY want me to point out the flaws? Because I will. As of now, even the slightest mention that your art may not be up to par seems to set you off...

I post here to get suggestions from people who are not amateurs, (exclusively) sig makers, or pixel artists.

Which means, people who have the credibility of knowing what they're talking about

Which, unfortunately, this place is plagued with.

What I did was nothing shameful.

In the comic book industry there are line-artists, who, after finishing their line work, pass it on to colorists

With the vectors/linework I used from DA, I took on the job of being a colorist.

If you're still wondering heres some of the tools I used.

Laso Tool

Blending/layer modes

Color Balance + Levels

Textures/Texture Fills.

just because its not complex doesn't mean it doesn't take skill.

I have refined my techniques over the years to KEEP it simple and quick for cases such as these (that need fast output)

Do you really, really, really, REALLY want me to point out the flaws? Because I will. As of now, even the slightest mention that your art may not be up to par seems to set you off...

I know its not that great, but, it needs to be done fast. When something needs to be done fast you have to sacrifice quality in many cases

You see, people like you think they're so superior to free-lance people because you get commissions. I am very very offended by the fact that you seem to think that pixel art is for amateurs, or that a pixel artist knows nothing about things like color or composition. You are wrong. All art exhibits all the elements.

What I have a problem with is the fact that you're acting just plain rude and elitist. That's great that you're a colorist. Good for you. However, I for one still don't think popping a few special effects on lineart is doing anything really. Sorry, but by posting this here I thought you wanted my opinions. If not, that's fine... go back to your hug box on Deviantart then.

Do tell, because really whats there that can be wrong with it?

composition, no... since the fly' is going to be applied to a program, not just rectangular image you see

colors, maybe... but like I stated they're not final. & I have more to go.

The only thing you could would be the cut-off of the antenna, which I can fix,

or take the jaggedness of the vector and pass that idea/theme on to the program.

Wow learn what YOUR talking about... Comic books it is like you said but they are noted and payed too. Are YOU paying for the lineart.... I think not. Welcome to Reality.

Free-lance line artists perhaps.

But those who work for companies like DC and Marvel are paid in salary, they have to complete so many per year (depending on how many issues of that comic franchise are to come out)

They work like a manufacturing line, just like a car factory. Someone does the concept > goes on to be drawn by another person > goes on to be colored by yet another person > then they often have people who put in the dialog > and finally someone who gets it ready for prints, and production.

I didn't state specifically that pixel art is for amateurs, Pixel art requires a *different skill set that doesn't associate with what I am doing.

*Being able to compose and replicate scenes/objects in very small form

You're correct about the color/composition part, but I said colors are not final, and composition is not a factor in what I posted.

If you didn't want criticism, then you shouldn't have posted here. Just because someone doesn't do the same thing as you, or doesn't get commissions, doesn't mean that their advice isn't valuable. It is.

Thus, you admitted I was right... and I'm a pretty crappy artist I can get some opinions by some people on here. So, take my "amateur" advice or logic whatever you want. Also, who says rectangle images can't be great... Look at an art gallery... About 90% are rectangle such as the Mona Lisa. So, go to your little crew that follows you around and says "Oh, LP that is such amazing artwork you did by yourself. Your AWSOME!".

Its rectangular because its cropped off to reduce file size, and to display the main object, and it's details.

-You get opinions on here because this place has a large population of pixel artists (some who are legitimately good). And sig makers.

--and judging by your DA, you appeal mostly to those sig makers.

Paintings aren't files... They are on a canvas... Or have you ever seen one? And by that comment you are say that I am good so you can't get "burned" by my "amateur" work.

I'm just so gosh darned proud that it's not a photo of yourself made to look like a 9 year old.

But seriously, this doesn't seem like anywhere near professional and looks like it was done by a twelve year old. I don't have much to say about improving, or what you are doing wrong, all I can say is it's terrible. But if I am mistaken, do go into more depth of what this will be used for, and don't use any artsy [cabbage] to try and glorify your job. I want to see how proud you are of something which takes little skill.

Also great to see such a "professional" artist take critique so well.

Do tell, because really whats there that can be wrong with it?

The overdone, overused glow behind it, for one thing... as well as the blotchy "leaf prints" on it's wings... The textures you used don't blend well. Anyone can use the magic wand tool to fill in areas with the texture paint bucket. The brown doesn't mess well with the aqua blue...

Furthermore, there can't be much wrong with it because you didn't do much in the first place...

since the fly' is going to be applied to a program,

the blue glow isn't universal with all backgrounds....

But those who work for companies like DC and Marvel are paid in salary, they have to complete so many per year (depending on how many issues of that comic franchise are to come out)

Ehem... how can something produced via assembly line be your own work anyway?? I doubt the line artist takes credit for the colorist's work...

I was requested to do this by someone who seen my work and wanted me to do this job for them.

All art is good to people who lack the eye for it.

It's there for the presentation factor, it isn't going to be in the final.

All art is good to people who lack the eye for it.

I made $5k-6k last year with promotion solely from facebook. How much did you make from your art in your lifetime?

Also won $1500 in prize from a contest last November.... (which was voted on against 20 pieces by the public)

And for those bashing DA, I don't care. look at my last 4-5 peaces and look at there submission date.

I don't use it often anymore, or take it seriously.

Making money from art doesn't mean much.

People pay millions for Damien Hirst's drivel, he's the smart one for making them believe it's art.

Van Gogh and lots of other artists' paintings were worth hardly anything when they were alive trying to sell them, and they certainly aren't bad artists. Really, selling art just means whoever paid for it is stupid enough to buy it, or they realise it's good and want to pay for it. Either way, you've made a profit and they've bought something.

Art is judged by others, and don't you dare say that people in the Gallery can't tell you your work sucks because they haven't made any money from theirs, or you deem them too amateurish.
