Punctuation, Grammar and the problems it can cause.

I'm not having a dig at people who post threads that are uncomprehendable, they do annoy me but i can keep my feelings to myself most of the time. I hang out on Help and Advice most of the time, and there's usually about one thread a day where the poster just uses so many abbreviations and 1337 type speak that the post cannot be understood properly.

Now i don't think perfect grammar and punctuation is needed, but i would like to suggest a new Global Announcement - something along the lines of...

"Reminder for comprehendable English and clear speak on the forums"

This would make life so much easier when (in my case) trying to respond to questions. If the question is clear, one doesn't have to read the post 5 times to try and understand it, and then write 5 times as much trying to cover all areas of what could have been asked (if you catch my drift?)

I also find this rude, if people want help - they should at least have the decency to make their problem clear, or 'comprehendable' to the other browsers. Perhaps oppurtunity for another sticky in H & A? - "Please make your questions readable!"

Maybe this is more of a rant, but it's all been said in good spirit - honest! ;)

I don't really think it's necessary, you can still understand what people are saying, even if they do have poor grammatical/spelling skills, or use leet speak. If they've posted entirely in 1337, report it and a mod will tell them to translate it.

I agree with pryomancer. Like he said, if posts are completely illegible, report them and a moderator will deal with it. We're not going to force people to talk in a certain way, not use certain abbreviations, etc. As long as it's still understandable, there's no problem with it. But again, if you just can't understand someone at all due to a lack of proper spelling, lack of punctuation, syntax that makes no sense, excessive leetspeak, etc., then report the post and we'll handle it.

There is a limit to what you can control, and I feel that spelling and grammar isn't in that limit. If the person can't use proper English, they will miss out. People won't be able to help them etc. Eventually they will learn to speak properly. Simple as that.

The golden rule when complaining about bad grammar or spelling, is making sure that your own post is written in clear English and as perfect as possible.

That aside, I kind of agree with your basic point in that a lot of people just post rubbish these days but I don't believe we need ant formal rules about this. Self regulation works for most people.

If their post is completely illegible due to grammatical issues, or using 1337 speak etc., they just don't get help and they don't have anyone but themselves to blame. Really, if you don't understand what they're saying at all, just don't post.

I know my own English isn't great, but at least it is understandable when read. Thanks for seeing my point though :)

As for the other comments - thanks for the feedback, but in all honesty there are threads i can't understand.

However i will report threads i can't decipher - thanks

I think that its not much of a problem since alot of Tip.It isn't English speaking. What would help(although I don't know how much hard it would be to like code it or whatever)would be a Spell Check/Translator for the users who don't use English as their first language.
