Only reason for a roll-back is if the bug affected every single person who played in every way.

i.e. Something messes up the character stat thing and everyone is back to level 3.

[hide=Drops]Dragon: Spear x1, Med helm x3, legs x2, pickaxe x1, skirt x3, scimitar x1

Barrows: DH helm x1, Verac Brassy x2, Karil Skirt x1, Ahrim Hood x2, Guthan Spear

GWD: Arma Helm x1

Other: Handcannon x4, Leaf Bladed Sword x3[/hide]

Well, 3hitm4g3u, why can't they do a similar roll-back like they did with Summoning? No one lost levels. No one lost items.

Because it's impossible to track which accounts crashed because of this.

I am sorry but I have to highly disagree. I used to run a massive online game where several hundreds played at one time. We were able to tell as much as what buttons they pushed at what time, how long they held it, where their camera angle was, etc. There are logs for this. Like I said, they could tell who clicked on a penguin. They can tell who typed µ. They can tell who died.

EDIT:

Plus, they would know which accounts to look into seeing as the victims could post for their accounts to be looked into.

Ok you you proved what? that you can log the activities of several hundred players. Runescape has what? A million or 2? And at one time 10s and 100s of thousands playing at one time. To do a query to get all of those who played during the bug would take a considerable amount of time. Then to tighten the query to only include those who were in areas affected by the bug.. the narrow a query to find those who were affected by that bug. And then do an audit on each of those logs one by one and then make a decision would take more time that it is worth for Jagex. The amount of additional labor, overtime and costs to do such a thing would clearly come as a cost to someone.. and I refuse to pay for that.

I've played since the start, and one of the TRUE roll backs, was when PHats were duped. They rolled back the servers a day and a half, so all the XP gained etc in that time was reversed.

Jagex basically saved all the information at certain points during the day, and all they do is load that save instead of the save that was made when you last logged out.

exactly.

they rolled it back because it caused a great affect in the economy. here, they were able to stop the crashing within a few hours, and nothing major happened. not compared to phat dupe

I guess they don't do roll back anymore, I remember at least 2 from RSC :?

Well in RSC a small bug could have easily effected nearly the entire community. Very, very, very difficult to find a bug that does that with today's RS population. Jagex also didn't have to worry as much about their image back then - roll backs produce some very angry users (for good reason!).
