March 11, 200917 yr I've never attended any of the Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence because of time constraints (I had planed on it), but the majority of my friends have. When they leave the school, they come out with a greater knowledge of different fields of study; one that they would never receive in high school. Recently in the news, Gov. Ed Rendell gave a preview of a budget proposal, around Jan, to cut state fundings in certain areas. Now the Gov's School is 100% state funded, so the students don't have to pay a dime. But in his new proposal, Rendell wants to cut funding toward the school which would result in closing it. First off, education should be the last place to cut funding; there are multiple areas that would better PA by being cut. Also, Rendell stands for bettering the education of PA by enabling people of lower/middle class status of education. So his actions are pretty hypocritical. Closing this school would cause over hundreds of students unable to attend a school and may discourage them from certain fields of study. Argh, this makes me upset. A couple of organizations have proposed to set up smaller versions of these schools, but it wouldn't be the same. Rendell also cut other helpful aspects of PA education... Here's a couple of news articles on the topic: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09070/954584-454.stm http://www.mcall.com/news/opinion/anoth ... 5823.story EDIT: Also, please sign the online petition here which has gained a lot of news attention(Takes less than 30 seconds!): http://www.petitiononline.com/pgse2009/petition.html <-- can't seem to get that to work. March 11, 200917 yr Yeah, we lost DARE when I was in sixth grade. Apparently the commercials of kids wearing hoodies and walking away discourage drugs. We need our "brains on heroin," man... That commercial scared the [cabbage] outta me. But, uh, yeah. This sounds like a stupid move. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
March 11, 200917 yr Getting rid of DARE is pretty lame, but getting rid of Governor's School?! Someone needs to do something about that.

That commercial scared the [cabbage] outta me. But, uh, yeah. This sounds like a stupid move. And hopefully they replaced it with some accurate Drug education. "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."

Didn't tell me anything else I already knew. Though, I hate how they say crap like, "Remember, during High School, you're going to be asked to do drugs ALL THE TIME." :wall: I'm not in High School, but I seriously doubt that. But yeah, that seems kinda foolish, cutting gov. school funds. Hm, recently here, they promised teachers raises, but they never gave them any raises. And they also cut the school's budget as well. EDiT:: Fixed some typos.

But no, you don't get offered "all the time." No one actually wants to share their hard earned weed.  Cutting DARE is stupid, but if it's replaced with a similar/better program than it's ok. I kinda didn't read the articles so... [bleep] the law, they can eat my dick that's word to Pimp

March 11, 200917 yr Lol, DARE. Back in 5th grade I didn't even know what drugs were. Seriously though, about 53 teachers and staff got fired in our school district in the last month (in California). Quite sad to see as one of the highest populated and economical driven states having to fire off teachers and reduce education. Last I checked we were about 34-37th place in education in the US. The rich folk up in Sacramento better do something soon. I suggest stop letting the Governor buy steroids using state funds. "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."
March 12, 200917 yr Getting rid of DARE is good as long as they replace it with something that is actually true and not pure propaganda. Kids should be educated about drugs. Educated, not scared. Problem with this is that It doesn't look like there will be a replacement, which is pretty bad. Hey.
March 13, 200917 yr Well, I suppose being scared [cabbage]less works good on the hard, bad-bad drugs. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Yeah, Southern Cal is hit hard by this, and it's pissing me of knowing that the governor can do something but won't, because all he can do is act.
March 13, 200917 yr Author Gov is also using all the funds for personal 'needs' too...Bah, I tried to make the topic focused on the school, not DARE :P Hi Chemp, how are ye?
