Shade burning for Profit, XP, and Fun!

Intro

Why would you want to burn shades? Well, they give firemaking xp, prayer xp, and combat xp. Also a small bit of crafting xp, but that is so slow (roughly 20k xp/hr) that one wouldn't count it.

Not only that, but if you get all things by yourself, you get 100% profit. And it is alot of profit. Once you are able to burn yew pyre logs, you get alot of rune items, which you will alch!

Quests required

REQUIRED Quests

Priest in Peirl to access Mortton

In Search of the Myreque (shortcut access, and required for..)

Shades of Mortton (basically a tutorial of the minigame. Doing this, I will skip the basics)

Suggested Quests

Nature Spirit

In Aid of the Myreque (for banking)

Items

The only items I would say you would have to have are:

coins.gifcoins

frune.gifnrune.gifMany alch runes

-Decent combat gear for acquiring shades

-lots of logs banked. See below for what kinds of logs you should use

Recommended items:

telekhar.gifAncient magics for canifis teleport. This is really useful if you havn't done In Aid of the Myreque, because it cuts your banking time in half

spirit_terrorbird.gifSpirit Terrorbird. It will allow you to carry more shades with you, and the run restore is quite useful.

bunyip.gifBunyip. Extra healing when collecting shades. though at a fairly high level, one would preferable use a BoB

Logs

log1normal_pyre_logs.gifYou need to at least be able to burn some logs. If you don't have any logs, there are many trees around to get them from. Normal logs can only used to burn the lowest two level shades, and their rewards are rubbage and not worth the time.

log2willow_pyre_logs.gifAt 35 firemaking, you can use willow logs to burn the next highest level shade. The rewards are decent, but still at this point it is a waste of time.

log3mahogany_logs.gifAll the way up to 55 firemaking, you can use mahogany logs to continue burning the third highest level shade. Still, worthless for rewards!

log4eucalyptus_pyre_logs.gif63 firemaking is where one can begin to profit. You can burn Asyn shades with Eucalyptus logs. They have quite good rewards. The logs cost quite a bit, and there isn't a good place to cut and bank them. So we will move on to yew

log5yew_pyre_logs.gifYew for a long time were the only log that could cremate the second highest level shade, the Asyn shades. Most of you reading this will be able to burn them, and will be burning them. So these are going to be the ones I'm going into detail with. I don't reccomend you to buy these. It is easy enough to cut them yourself. They require a (4) doce of sacred oil

log6magic_pyre_logs2.gifMagic logs are the best, and the only type of logs that can cremate fiyr shades. They also give the most xp of any other log and shade! 404 FM and 100 prayer xp. Which is allot, seeing as you will profit from this! They also required (4) doces of sacred oil

Getting There

I'm just assuming that you have done all the quests required to access the minigame, but here is a map. Because all good guide includes maps!

map.png

Sacred Oil

Now, when you are there, you should hop to one of the shade burning themed worlds, because making the sacred oil needs a team. In the past, world 2 was the only world for this. But with themed worlds, you can pretty much do this any time of the day!

Go to Razmire and buy at least 5 limestone blocks, 5 planks OR beams, and at least 25 swamp tar. You need 5 swamp tar for every 1 limestone brick and 1 beam you use.

001.png

Limestone is in BLACK

Support beams are in RED

Swamp tar is in YELLOW

Hammer is in WHITE

You can either use a normal 1gp hammer to build the temple, or spend 13k on a flamtaer hammer. This hammer greatly speeds up building the temple, and thus getting sanctity. If you are only going to buy sacred oil, you can skip the next few steps.

Recommended items are at the top.

Lots of coins to buy building supplys

Spirit terrorbird for energy restoration

Next, go to the sacred temple in the north of the town

002.png

The top HUD (heads up display) will show things you need to know.

Temple repair state is how much the temple is built. You can only create sacred oil when the temple repair state is at 100, and you have 10% sanctity.

Resources are the amount of limestone bricks, swamp tar, and support beams you have stored. I suggest you try to get this to 100%, because it always stays with you. When you are out of resources, you can not build the temple any more.

Sanctity is how much you have helped the temple. You need to get this to at least 10% before you can start making sacred oil. You can raise sanctity by building the temple or attacking the lore shades that attack the temple.

003.png

When you are at a high level of sanctity, go to the general store and buy many olive oils (3). There is no drink option, so it is very easy to combine them into (4) doses. If you are using any type of log under Eucalyptus, you need less then 4 doses. But turning them into (4) lets you do more at a time, and uses less sanctity then doing 3 and then combining them.

004.png

When you have the desired amount of sacred oil, go back to the bank and use your oils on your logs. This will turn them into ____ pyre logs, which are only good for burning shades and barbarian bones.

Getting the Shades

Now that you have pyre logs, you need to get some shade remains.

To get the best types of remains, you need a high level key. To get a high level key, you need to gain access to the deep parts of the shade tomb. If you do not have a key, then you will sadly have to burn 1 shade of each type to gain access to the highest level shade you can burn. This can be skipped, however, by simply buying a shade remains from the GE! Though this is NOT recommended, because the shade remains can cost allot.

So, always keep a key or two in your bank!!

The shades themselves aren't that dangerous. They have more hp then any other stat, and their max hit is roughly 10.

I recommend bringing some backup food, just in case. Accidents DO happen, and it is better to come prepared then not.

For med-levleled people, I recommend guthans. You may wish to exchange the spear for a whip and shield, or other weapon, but if your defense level is low, you will take allot of damage!

005.png

For higher leveled players, you may wish to focus more on offense then defense. Although Bandos costs allot, its defense is pretty good. I was able to get a full load of shade remains by using only two sharks.

006.png

NOTE THAT SHADES ARE UNDEAD. USING A SALVE AMULET WILL HELP YOU GREATLY! TRY TO GET A SALVE AMULET (E). DO NOT USE A GLORY. DO NOT USE A FURY. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $200!

Inside the Tomb

tomb_map.jpg

If you can only burn yew logs, then you need a black key. It can be aquired from the Ryil shades.

Most people can only burn up to yew, and that means they need Asyn shades. They have the biggest room, and have semi-decent rewards. Simply kill them, collect their remains, and then bank.

However, if you can burn magic pyre logs, then you should kill Fiyr shades. They have the best rewards. They are also the most powerful shade. To gain access, you need a silver key, which can be gotten from burning a Asyn shade.

Burning the Shades!

When you have a desired amount of shade remains, and pyre logs, go to mortton with them. You need 1 pyre log for every 1 shade you wish to burn.

There is roughly a 10% chance of getting a coin reward. The coins are a little bit more then what that log's longbow would alch for. You still gain the FM and prayer xp for burning them.

008.png

Use your pyre logs on the cremation stone, then use your shade remains on it, and then light it with a tinderbox.

009.png

You gain a reward of keys or coins.

silver_keys.gif

This is a picture of the silver keys you can gain from burning firy shades. The second shade, Asyn, gives you black keys, and sometimes the two lowest silver keys, red and brown. Only the type of shades in the room will drop the highest level keys for that room.

For example, lore shades will drop only bronze-red and bronze-brown keys. Phrin shades (in the bronze chest room) drop all the bronze keys, AND they drop steel-red and steel-brown keys.

The same is true for higher leveled shades.

IMPORTANT

Make sure you keep the highest level key you can get! This is to ensure that you don't nave to burn all the low level shade again. For example, I can burn up to yew pyre logs. So to ensure my ability to access Asyn shades again with ease, I keep a black key in my bank!

Rewards!

Rewards from chests vary. See the RS KB for exact rewards.

Sometimes you can gain alot of rune items and alchables, other times you simply get garbage. However, you gain alot of FM and prayer xp, so this is a profitable, abit slow way to train prayer. Here is a reward sample from one trip of black and silver chests. I alched everything alchable.

010.png

Another way you might gain profit from this, without doing the whole minigame.....

Sacred oil, pyre logs, and shade remains are in good demand. You can gain profit from getting all, or some of these and selling them. Firy remains are 2k each, worth alot. However you don't gain any prayer or FM xp from this.

It was all good until it got to the other shade remains and the keys. The keys really confused the hell out of me.

I might do this one day. You might want to mention dharok'ing shades for higher levels, its always fun to see some 100+ hits.

Started free trade with 1.5m cash. 2 weeks later, have hit max cash 2x.

PvP drops: 359 Brawling Gloves, 11 Vesta's Longswords, 41+ Zaros/Ancient Statues

9 Dragon Full Helms, 3 Dragonfire Shields on the old PvP loot system

Brawler guide is being finished!

Its quite hard to explain. Basically, sometimes you get a higher levled key from a shade that will lead you to the next room. And only shades in that room drop the purple/black keys for their rooms

Nice guide :) I haven't had the patience to get a full inventory of shades, but it's nice that someone thought about it.You might want to correct : Myreque, not Myresque. Also, you should do the quests that let you access Burgh the Rott Ramble minigame(I believe it's the "In Aid of Myreque" and "Darkness of Hallowale" quests).

well you could also use them for burning vyrewatch although it takes awfully long to kill them (which is what I'm doing).

You won't really need so many scrolls and 2 pouches. Summon one at the bank and bring 2-3 scrolls, then if you have enough resources, just buy and store 6 olive oils in your bird and fill the rest of your inventory with olive oils. sanctify, bank and repeat till resources run out. wish they would make a sanctify x though :(

love the guide though, I found shade burning to be very fun but I wished they would update the rewards or something. Maybe in the next myreque quest, hopefully

Nice guide, I personally prefer cremating vyrewatch though. The rewards are substantially larger.

I'm just going to mention some numbers I got last night from burning ~24 asyn shades with yew pyre logs.

*i bought my yew logs

*i got sacred oil myself

*i got the shade remains myself

The 24 yew logs cost about 10k

As shade remains and the pyre were free, they costed nothing.

After alching EVERYTHING from the chests I got from 24 silver keys, I had roughly 50-80k in coins, not counting yew and magic logs and fine cloth.

This means that you can still be semi profitable by buying your logs and shade remains!

Although I'm not sure what could be said from the firy shades, I can't burn them..
