Tiki Game - 3D Game Character Design WIP

Featured Replies

I doubt I'll get around to actually developing the game -- this is mainly for modeling/animation practice. The design idea is a "cartoonish" but mature-themed action/adventure game in a "tiki island" setting. The player can choose to be a healer, spellcaster or melee fighter.

Witchdoctor (Healer)

The concept is heavily influenced by this illustration.

Here's the modeling WIP... More to come soon!

Looks nice so far. Hopefully we'll be seeing him improved more?

This is a WIP, so I'll post updates as they come along.

Just trimming away polys now before I begin modeling details (pouch, headband, necklace) and unwrapping UVs.

How long did it take you to build that portion? An estimate would be fine.

Some nice concepts there.

I'm really loving the 3d concepts, especially. I really like the cartoony modelling.

Thanks.

It's taken me about 2 hours, maybe more. Will be my first time modeling a character. :)

Almost finished the model... Just needs some details.

Currently at 700 tris, I'm aiming for < 1500 for each main character.

What program are you using?

I'm using 3ds Max 7.

Tris = triangles.

The model consists of 374 polygons, but it has a lot of quads. Game engines tend to break each quad into 2 triangles, so it's sometimes better just to count in triangles.

Unwrapped the head today...

Wishing Max 7 had an automatic unwrapper rather than having to adjust and map everything by hand. :x

Quick texture test... ignore the torso

EDIT: finished unwrapping the torso.

Quick texture test. You can see the alpha map in effect with the feathers.

That looks pretty awesome so far. Good job.

What does unwrapping mean exactly? :?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_mapping

Essentially, it's a matter of lying all of the faces of a 3D model onto a flat, 2D surface (so that they can be painted on).

In Max, this mostly consists of unwrapping and adjusting certain faces in order to lie them out in a nice and clean fashion, making the most of the space you have while still ensuring that the textures will look proportionate and seamless.

I think I've got the hang of it now, though, so hopefully the torso will go by faster.

...What? It's a default feature in Blender... :?

Which is a good thing because I would probably do it pretty badly. :XD:

Looking nice. We need more 3d art and pixel art. The board is flooded with render photoshops.

Still trying to rig the thing. Rigging is a lot more frustrating than I thought.

I've got some bones linked, so far... Might take a while to load the animation.

tikianim01.gif

Nice stuff. I assume the animation is supposed to be slow at this point right? :)

I haven't tried rigging yet myself, really need to get into some character design for 3D though. Tiki guy is looking good so far.

Hi guys

I've always had troubles with unwrapping in 3ds max as it is a lot of work if the model is complicated. Here are some UVW unwraping tutorials that helped me improve my unwrapping skills

hope it helps

Hi

i dunno why you're so aggressive about it, did you at least take a look at the tutorials? are they totally useless? I dont think so.

I dont know about you guys but I learned how to use 3ds max by reading a lot of tutorials. I sure think that reading free tutorials sure beats the heck out of paying a ton of $$ to take some 3ds courses.

kindest regards,

John

Hey Venomai, it's been a while since I've last read these forums or been here but I thought I would give you some c/c since I am currently studying game development at the moment, first of all you're off to a great start.

My first peice of advice would be to perhaps rethink your 'edge flow' I'd start with the head by conforming it to something like this: (Hope you don't mind the paint-over ^^)

pover.jpg

With an edge flow similar to that, you will reduce your poly count and will also have a much smoother and evened out mesh :)

Here is a much higher poly head of a pretty standard example of some good basic edge flow:

Other than that I can't really comment on much because the texturing doesn't look to be near completion yet :P but if you have any questions about anything feel free to ask and I'll try check back and answer :P
