Hilarious is fine. The prof was telling us not to use "mass hysteria" in papers anymore, but she's a sociology prof (I'm in her orientation class) so it's understandable that she has a passion for such things.

That's really only part of the story. Hysteria referred to a dubious (i.e. [cabbage]) victorian era medical diagnoses whose symptoms included a woman doing anything besides being subservient to the men in their lives. If she's not content with the [cabbage]ty lot in life that women of that time got, she had hysteria! The main treatment for hysteria was for the woman to be given a hysterical paroxysm. That's when she would go to the doctor and made to have an orgasm. Funnily enough, this led to women diagnosing themselves with hysteria, as they -ahem- enjoyed the treatment. The doctors of the time actually didn't like giving hysterical paroxysm, so they invented the vibrator as a means of self-medication for the women, so they would stop bothering them. Completely true story.
