A hundred years from now, most people aren't going to be idiotically afraid of or uncomfortable around gay people, luckily. Just like how 50 years ago we'd be talking about how people would get uncomfortable around black people and that they shouldn't be allowed in the military because it wouldn't make people work together as well. Now no one gives a [bleep]. We just have to let the close-minded people catch up.

That's not really true. In Greece and Rome, being gay was the norm in a lot of cases. Sparta, for example, had special practices for getting their men to like women when they were about to be released from military service, that way they'd have children and not just get with other guys.

 

I'd bet Sparta didn't have DADT.

 

All of Greece was gay, but that's a special case. I'm pretty sure pie was talking about modern society.

Because, believe it or not, most gay people aren't horny bastards that are just in the military to take showers with other men. If they cause a problem, then kick them out. That's not a problem with their being gay. That's a personal self-control issue. And a small minority of gay people showering with a ton of straight guys is a lot [bleep]ing different then all the men showering with all the women.

Its really no secret that 2 people who've served in combat together share a stronger social bond than almost, if not all others, including married couples. So if I wrote today "I love my brothers in arms." In 1000 years, someone reading that could easily interpret it as homosexual, whereas the literal meaning of it is different. But I'm no expert on Greek and whatnot, so it's not for me to say.

Additionally, men used to bathe with women all the time. It's in a society's standards whether or not it's acceptable for different genders to see each other naked in non-sexual environments.

Nah, it goes beyond that, basically the whole idea of "platonic love" is from men toward men, whereas love to woman is more social convention to procreate. Or something like that.

Again, I fall back on my philosophy of (almost) nothing being inherently bad. It's all about the connotations we, and our society, put on the subject.

I'm with Seany, there's no point in something that doesn't need to be said when that could affect your team in a negative way.

Did you read the debate? That's what I was addressing the entire time.

It all ends up falling on people not being comfortable around gays, and it's a change that has to happen in society. Social norms and morals aren't going to change in the millitary. Once homosexuality becomes more openly accepted in society, then changes in the millitary will follow. Just give it a generation and it'll be set.

So then what is the point of this debate if you guys are agreeing?

The day when there is no problem with gay people is the day when it should have been removed, but forcing it on a military/society that isn't "ready" for it will probably cause more trouble than help.
