Don't Ask Don't Tell shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. Having it in the first place is discrimination, removing it makes the whole thing awkward, who the hell cares what your sexuality is.

Of course it was an issue, because things that shouldn't have been issues usually end up as issues.

I would assume some people don't like gays fighting for their country.

I don't know, don't really care either.

The once was a mexican called pepsi,

Or maybe it's just he had Hep C,

He was a pretty cool bro,

Bros generally are you know,

He hailed from the land of 'taters,

He was known to hate many-a-hater,

He likes a girl named Lacey,

His thoughts about her are kind of racy,

And also his dad likes to [rooster].

Most people say they can't even understand what there saying so how do you know if they're worshiping the devil? You don't, so maybe you should learn more about it before you judge and hate on it.

Of course it was an issue, because things that shouldn't have been issues usually end up as issues.

It didn't stop gays from joining the military, it just stopped them from being openly gay in the military. And if you don't join because you cant run around telling everyone how fabulous you are, you don't belong in the military anyway. So now when someone does act openly gay, all that's going to happen is that it'll be awkward for everyone else, and they'll probably end up semi-isolated, which is not good.

Yeah, but that's not what was happening. People would get discharged for simply stating their sexuality, not "running around being fabulous." The fact that they would get removed for saying that is discrimination. Running around being obnoxious is a problem that both gay and straight people have, and should not be "fixed" with creating Don't Ask Don't Tell.

If you're good enough friends with someone they probably wouldn't tell anyone you were gay anyway. You'd get discharged because then everyone knew you were gay, defeating the purpose. Gay people make many people, and so it would disrupt unit cohesion. What's more important? The unit functioning together, succeeding, and staying alive, or someone's "right" to let people know their sexuality. That's my problem with it. Your need to tell people you're gay should not be more important than my life or that of my shipmates.

Not to mention how much it was probably ignored. There was a guy in my boot camp division who was obviously gay, people avoided him, but no one ran to the chain of command to get him kicked out.

It's mostly because people are still uncomfortable around gay people. I support it being removed because it's a major problem that has to be tackled. Yes, it will take time for people to get used to it, but after generations of soldiers, it can only become a norm. Obviously not everyone will be gay, but it will become something that isn't really important.

So what you're saying is that we should promote people's hatred of gay people in the name of safety?

People try to hide all sorts of shit to get into the military. Medical conditions, criminal records, etc. They could probably serve just as well most of the time, but they still kick them out because they present a liability.

You guys love your rights to be individuals. That shit will get you killed, bottom line. I recently read an article about a Muslim ROTC girl who thought not being able to wear her hijab in ranks was discrimination. You join the military knowing you have to be the same as everyone else. Why are we trying to make exceptions? The military changes you, not the other way around.

@killer: I don't want to shower with a gay guy. I don't want to have to grab a gay guy's junk during a search, that's awkward enough with a straight guy. I think we have reasonable grounds to be uncomfortable.

A hundred years from now, most people aren't going to be idiotically afraid of or uncomfortable around gay people, luckily. Just like how 50 years ago we'd be talking about how people would get uncomfortable around black people and that they shouldn't be allowed in the military because it wouldn't make people work together as well. Now no one gives a [bleep]. We just have to let the close-minded people catch up.

So if gay people can shower with people they're sexually attracted to, why can't I?

That's not really true. In Greece and Rome, being gay was the norm in a lot of cases. Sparta, for example, had special practices for getting their men to like women when they were about to be released from military service, that way they'd have children and not just get with other guys.

I'd bet Sparta didn't have DADT.

My skin is finally getting soft
