4th person you know that's had a child, or her 4th child?

There's only one person I know that's currently pregnant at my school.

Well, one hour of cutting later, and I got rid of a quarter of a page. Awesome.

I've always found this speech stuff kind of interesting.

So you prepare these big speeches on a topic given to you, and whoever gives the best speech wins?

Because that's the exact kind of assignment in school that I loathed.

Again, interesting.

It's kind of like that. However, we get to pick our own speeches.

Probably the most best explanation:

There's two categories of events, platforms and interps.

Platforms are what you would think of as a speech. We pick a topic, and we either write an entertainment(a funny speech with no factual merit), an informative(Informs, rather than persuades, about a topic), or an oratory(Persuades, rather than informs, about a topic). Then we get together and give the speeches, and get judged on who gives the most natural presentation with the best written speech and maybe the best visual aids depending on your event.

There are also Extemps. They're more like what you described - they get given a topic about some modern political issue, and they're given a half hour to write a speech about it and present it. It's a different kind of speech, and it's usually not counted alongside the others.

Then there are interps. These are more like mini-plays or acting skits than speeches. You don't write your own stuff, you find or put together a script and give an interpretation of that. There's HI (Humorous Interp, primarily funny), DI (Dramatic Interp, usually monologues about sad events (like rape)), and Poetry (Several different poems with a common theme put together and delivered.). The winners of these events are the ones who have the best characters, the best pops, and the best readings. Most people do these events, rather than platforms.

As a subset of interps, there's the two group events, duo and OID. Both of these can be either funny or serious, depending on what script you choose. Duo/duet is what it sounds like - 2 people interping a script together. The difference between duo and duet is that one of them allows the speakers to touch, and the other doesn't. OID, on the hand, is a group of people. 3-5 people are in an OID team, and they interp their script together. Touching isn't allowed in this event at all. Both events are judged on the same things as the solo interps, but the judge will also look at how well the group works together, which can be a blessing and a curse.

Speech kids don't get together so much for the speech giving, though that can be fun sometimes, especially if you're in a good entertainment round, but instead they do speech because it's fun and classy. Speech kids wear suits. That makes us pro.

Edit: Most best. Wow my brain is fried tonight. I kept writing right instead of write too. >.<

I actually read all of that. Is it like a class dedicated to giving speeches?

No, it's an extracurricular.

I had one of those days yesterday.

Anyways, that english reading was rather short. Not much of an adventure. It was Ben Franklin writing on how to be morally perfect.

Yawn.

Tyler, what was your Junior english setup last year? Was it two different classes? Or was it just one full year class?
