Rules That Need to be Enforced

Recommended Posts

There are many rules not fully enforced on these forums, some being harder to enforce thne others. Now, to quote the Tip.It Forum Rules, which can be veiwed at:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=480329

Breaking it down into the rules that aren't enforced.

Avatar limits are 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels high, by 20Kb file size.

Sure, one of the hardest to enforce rules, but I've been right clicking and selecting properties on anyone I have a person grudge on these forums. Turns out more then 60% of them have an Avatar Size of MORE then 20KB. Right now, mine is 2000Bytes (Around it). With, what I think turns into 2KB, right? This rule is overly not enforced whatsoever and needs to be much more looked at by moderators and administrators.

Impersonating or acting like a Tip.It Moderator or Staff Member is forbidden and can result in disciplinary action.

This is very viewable and laxly (WordNet lols) enforced. Things like "This needs to be locked. and 'inb4lock lololololozorirhackor'" are just as bad as any spam.

I'm also going to point out contradictions in the rule system.

Mild, intelligent flaming is allowable. However, pointless harassment aimed at a specific individual or group of people is unacceptable.

somebody calling you a "noob"
That's completely an opinion and up to person who is being flamed up to decide if it is offensive or not. I think National Socialism is perfectly fine, but some may not. It is just a opinion.

Once I read over the rules a few more times I will post more.

Fun Fact of the week: Less then 1/4 of the total forum users have read the rules. Go figure.

Got a little news for you- The moderators work very hard behind the scenes to keep the rules enforced, especially the signature/avatar size limits which are difficult to enforce in themselves but even so necessary. I can tell you that your admittedly biased approach to checking avatars isn't really helping you here either.

If someone decides to post on the thread instead of reporting it, all they have to lose is their reputation. Do not worry about those posters, they will take care of themselves.

Basically what dsavi said.

If you have a problem with someone breaking the rules just use the little nifty report button at the top right hand corner of their post. There's even the option to report someone for having an avatar/signature that does not fit within the guidelines. ;)

You as a user can help just by notifying us when there is a problem and I'm sure one of the staff members can fix it right away.

I completely fail to see how you would notice how many avatars we deal with. :) We remove many per each week due to checking avatars, and users reporting them to us. Undoubtably a work force of around 50 people is not going to be able to remove every avatar/check every user when there are over 100,000 accounts. But we very much do our best, and I say we do a good job. But if that's your view, then it's very narrow.

A tip.it staff member would not go into a thread, and say "This needs to be locked"; and then leave it at that. So it is hardly acting like a staff member, if anything it is spamming, which we will often warn the user for. Though really it depends on the severity of the incident. If a user says it needs to be moved and links to the right forum, there isn't that much wrong with such a post, but if one says "inb4thelock", then they will often receive a warning as such.

I fail to see how you can 'nit-pick' our rule system merely be looking at the flaming section. Calling someone a noob, which is agreeable by most users, is not offensive. The definition of noob is merely a new player, there is nothing offensive about it.

Also;

Fun Fact of the week: Less then 1/4 of the total forum users have read the rules. Go figure.

I didn't realise you contacted every member and asked them if they had read the rules.

I swore I added in a report feature paragraph. IDG2S to do it right now. To Rainy Day, divide the Total Accounts by the Number of Veiws on the Tip.It Rules Topic.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=480329

And how many of the total accounts are inactive? Probably 3/4 of them, which logically means that almost all the user's have read the rules.

Now I know that probably isn't true, but it's the same kind of guess you made when you said 1/4 of members have read the rules.

In terms of the "ib4l" spam, yes, it annoys me too. But it isn't my job to deal with, or to make a post about it, so if it is that annoying, report, and move on.

Actually, mine isn't "just a guess". For a fact, less then 1/4 of the forum users have read the rules.

And as highlighted, less than a quarter of our members are actually active on the forum. I'd say the active users most likely have read the rules.

This one is enforced as much as possible, but we do primarily rely on reports for this. Moderators cannot give up all their time and just browse the forums checking avatar sizes :( We do remove them as we see them and remove all avatars that are reported, but we do have more important matters to attend to. This also isn't a huge issue that NEEDS NEEDS NEEDS to be addressed. I'm not saying we should let it slide, but it's not a #1 issue.

Moderators are fully aware of this and again, we take care of it as much as we can. However, I would not call this impersonation. Spam - yes. But impersonation is a bit of a stretch. No one would confuse someone who say that ("ib4lock") with a moderator. But something you have to understand is that SO many people say this. We remove as many posts as we can and send warnings accordingly, but no matter how many times we do that or how many announcements we make, people still say it.

We do not leave the rules up to users. When we deal with offensive content, we do not ask ourselves "Is the person whom this is directed at offended by what was said?" Instead, we ask ourselves, "Could anyone be offended by this?" We try to work in a broader sense here. Sometimes a comment could be directed at Person #1, and another person who simply reads that comment (but it wasn't directed at) gets offended by it.. rather because it was simply said or because it could also relate to them in some way. For this rule, moderators just have to use their best judgement. Obviously people could get offended at almost anything, so we can't get too out of control and remove things that most people would consider acceptable.. but this is where things are no longer black and white - but rather grey. It is impossible to run a forum with a completely black and white moderating system. After a certain point, moderators have to use their best judgement.

In conclusion, I don't think that any of the rules you mentioned aren't being enforced. There is a lot more to being a moderator, and our policies and just how we do things than what you see in the rules. Moderators use their best judgement and we do have our own private policies on how we deal with and interpret the rules. We all have the same general manner of thinking and same guidelines on how to interpret the rules and take action against violators, but we are also trusted to use our best judgement, and I think that we all do a pretty good job with that.

If you see any posts that violate the rules (like "ib4l" posts) REPORT THEM. If you just read them and think to yourself, "My gosh.. what lazy moderator hasn't removed this yet?" nothing will get done. You have to be an ACTIVE user. Report the post. We moderators do not have a built in radar that turns red and flashes whenever someone violates the rules. And we do not have a GPS system to direct us to that rule-breaking post. YOU - the users - have to help us. There are more users than moderators so more often than not, you will see a rule-breaking post before us. Help us by reporting it. Then we can deal with it appropriately.

This is why I have mine done by users who know how to make them without Immense Sizes. \'

To break down what Tripsis said in easier terms, They check all over the content because even though it might not offend the person its directed at, other users or even Guests browsing the forums could be upset about it.

Plus Moderators also rely on us plain ol' users to help as well. If we didn't report, there'd be alot of flaming, spam and abuse taking hours to clean up. ;)

I find it ironic how you're saying that rules such as the avatar size limits should be enforced when your signature is 2.8MB over the limit.

Forum Signature Limits are 450 pixels wide by 200 pixels high by 100Kb file size.

Are you sure you've read the rules? ;)
