sumondskull6
I'm thinking about maging steel dragons for a bit of exp because I'm bored and can't find another method to 99 mage that I can tolerate for more than a few days. The only questions is, what spell should I use? Everyone says fire bolt, but it's getting tiresome. Does fire wave profit? slayer dart? ancients? reasons to use them over others? I'd just like a bit of advice, spell wise, from someone who knows better than me what there doing there. I'd also like to at least break even. Thanks to anyone who helps
Dexek
Fire wave used to be great when they were being brought in through BA. I believe they were on par for the GP/XP with fire bolts back then. Currently it's best to firebolt. I would suggest maging the iron dragons though. You can kill quite a few more, even if the expensive drops are less common, I feel it evens out. I'm personally up 2M on 30k casts at iron dragons. If you're up more at steels let me know so I can potentially switch over. : PoetryIndexed Picture 1Indexed Picture 2 Killed my maxed Zerker pure April 2010 Rebooting Runescape

I was fire bolting in W99, but am currently smithing 5-50k addy bars on RS so I won't be around there for a while. I forgot to add that I use SC robes for my magic training. I like the 80-100k xp/hr and half as many casts idea for 99. Best of luck with the maging. I find that a pair of SC robes lasts me about 2k fire bolts. It is likely different for different magic levels. Also, that's a good 4100 points to 99 from 89, which is what I'm at now. How much exp do you get per 1k casts without SC?

I'm not sure per 1k casts, but if I was getting 80-100k/hr with SC robes, then it would be 40-50k/hr without. I wear the full robes because I can't wear Ahrims, and SC Robes = Mystic stats. I have enough SC points, and feel the game is fun enough to train with SC items. I've used maybe 3k SC points in the past month, and still have over 11k. PoetryIndexed Picture 1Indexed Picture 2 Killed my maxed Zerker pure April 2010 Rebooting Runescape

I think I've decided to do slayer dart/guthans barrows method, and with the profits do something costly and fast. Like barraging rock lobbies, stringing amulets, or even alching if I'm feeling lazy. JoeDaStudd
I've been posting this a bit as I've recently grown a massive love of it (4 full trips = 3 d axes, 1 zerker and 1 warrior and from lvl 78 to nearly 81 magic). Maging at DK's. The exp is good 40k+ per hour, its campable (guthan+unicorns with enough casts would last ages) and its good money. Per ~1.2k CoG casts I've so far averaged a d axe or berserker ring. Its better exp and money then barrows and if you get a nice population world it should be better exp the maging steels. It does require attention, but d axe, berserker and warrior ring drops all add up pretty fast so if you wanted to you could use that profit to burst rock lobsters, string jewellery or so on. I already did a few trips there, and I can easily last over 7 titans (7 hours). The ONLY problem I have with maging DKs atm is that I'd buy a SGS and DFS to stay a long time. I have a 94m cash pile, and I can't afford to take a loss on sgs/dfs with the fluctuating/inflated market, especially knowing that the summer crash is right around the corner. Although the profit might outway the possible loss. I'm just paranoid is all :( Edit: I've maged at Dks at least 20 times, but just a few times since I set my goal towards 99 mage. I know what I'm doing.
ultimatballr
I found maging Irons with fire bolt to not be that bad. The kills can get rather long-winded as opposed to other spells but with chaos guants the extra damage adds up and makes it bearable. You could stick to doing this for a little then hopefully get a few drops (vissage if you are lucky and buy the rest of 99) but it will get pretty old as the exp isn't that great. I don't think using SC items is worth it either but that's entirely up to you, I am just not a fan of SC I am in the same boat as you though. I too need 99 mage and right now I am buying 20k Unstrung Unholy symbols in GE (came out to about 5m). 2 days and only 5k bought to give you an idea on how it's going. I do not know any restrictions you have on your money though. Just do me a favor, if you find something good shoot me a PM ;) As I will do the same for you. Apparently, my signature was to big. And then being the stupid person that I am, but back sgs/dfs and go do some more Dks.
runoilija92
I just started maging irons/steels. The runes i have: 2000 bloods, 1000 chaos(gauntlets for these) 1000 deaths, 10k minds, air staff, fire runes. Gear: ahrim hood, sara cape, infinity top&bottom, wealth, fury, infinity boots, staff of air, barrows gloves/chaos gaunts, antidrag shield. Total mage bonus = 80 To me it actually seems that using fire strike is pretty effective(lol). hits pretty much as often as the other spells, normally hits 7s, 1 strike costs ~~40gp. I know it takes longer to get kills, the exp is slower, BUT you waste alot less money on the runes--> make moar profit!
