So I have never had a waterfiends task before, and I just got one. I need a good setup for killing them. I'm a very frugal individual and will not spend 20m on a setup for one task.

Stats:

att: 90

str: 83

def: 80

hp: 86

pray: 70

summ: 69-70

Help is appreciated

Wear the best mage def armor you can get your hands on. They are weak to crush attacks so a Z spear would be your best bet if you don't have access to a god sword. Pray range since their range attack is stronger than their mage attack..

With your stats, you might have difficulty with this task. The waterfiends are lvl 115, which is not bad; however, they attack with both range and mage. For most players, this means heavy use of prayer. With your lvl 70, you would need quite a few prayer pots. This also means the armour you wear will need heavy defense in range/mage. Also, if I remember correctly, waterfiends are weak in "stab" or "crush". You would be wise to check this out in the RuneScape Knowledge Base so you will understand which weapon to use.

I can tell you what I have seen used in that area fighting waterfiends, which might help. To start with, the familiars most popular are Unicorns and Bunnyips. I prefer Bunnyips because waterfiends drop quite a bit of "raw" fish; and Bunnyips will permit you to use those as food "without" scrolls. (Edited: ooops, you do need scrolls.) The weapons I have seen in here are zammy spears & sara godswords. The armour has been the more expensive ones such as Bandos & Armadyl. I personally use Guthans while carrying the sara godsword and have been able to stay longer than most.

If you want to try them just to see what they are like, I would suggest you wear the best armour you have that has the strong mage/range defense and carry a teleport tab for quick escape. (There is also a "log" near them which you can click on to get out. It carries you down a river to a safe exit point not far from Seers Village.)

Fairy rings will now take you straight to the waterfiends if you can use those; however, you would need to go in first and repair the one that is there.

Also, remember when going to the waterfiends you will be passing by green dragons; so be sure you have an antifire shield equipted with mage protect turned on during that run.

Hope this helps

I strongly advise you to first "finish" the fairy ring in the ancient caverns (you'll need 6 bittercap mushrooms and a spade for that).

The fairy ring makes it easy to escape and bank very quickly, without the loss of your familiar.

The best familiar by far is the bunyip. Bring "swallow whole" scrolls. 30 or 40 should do.

Wear gear with high mage def (karils or d'hide).

Best weapons are sara sword & zammy spear, both on crush.

Check the attack style again after using the fairy ring. Wielding the lunar staff tends to change it.

I usually dont even bother with pray range, but you might find it helps. Just give it a try with and without.

Good luck !

Striked through stuff is generally wrong.

Take:

Dhide/Karils

Zspear > SS > SGS > Any other Godsword/Dmace + Rune Defender.

Fury > Glory

Dboots

SW cape > Ardougne Diary cape > SkillCape (t) > Mage arena godcape.

Berserker ring > Lumbridge Diary ring > whatever other you want.

In invent take:

Staff for fairy rings

Bunyip scrolls

4 ppots

4-5 Monkfish

Ee if you have, but not if you take SGS.

Extra Bunyip pouch if you don't want to bank

Attacking with the crush setting of the weapon I usually pray ranged till they go unagressive. Then praying range when low on health whilst waiting for Ee spec or a raw fish drop.

With this you can last around 120 wfs without having to bank, and banking is a nice break from the dungeon.

Why can't the Big Bang be done by the hand of God?

It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities.

If you're really frugal, you could use my set-up, however I only got about 50 kills per trip.

Atk: 80

Str:80

Def:80

Pray: 60

Mage: 79

HP: 83

Slayer Helm

Glory

Black Dragonhide Body/Chaps

Dragon Boots

Rune Defender/Anti-Dragon Shield

RoW

Dragon Battleaxe(surprisingly effective, even for its mediocre speed)

I usually protect range. Bring about 4-5 prayer pots, a super set or two(just bring super attack and a regular restore pot if you use DBA spec, or a super restore to replace a prayer pot), and fill the rest with monks. I used a terrorbird to hold my food so I could pick up drops, but I'm sure a bunyip is much more useful. In that case, take a few more pray pots and an extra super set. I saw one guy actually safe-spotting them with range, but this only works if they turn non-aggressive. If you can borrow a GodSword, that would be nice, especially Bandos or Saradomin.

Very simple. Use your standard melee equipment, except replace the melee armor with Karils/black dhide and replace your standard weapon with the best crush weapon. Then bring your bunyip and about 6-8 prayer potions + pure sets and you're good to go.

Another good choice: Verac's flail. When I bought it, it cost 320k. It's crush bonus is also better than the Zamoakian spear, Saradomin sword , and the Saradomin godsword (65, 60, and 80 vs. 82), and it's as fast as a longsword. You can train all 3 melee types with it as well. It also degrades, but if You're only going to be using it for waterfiends this shouldn't be a big deal.
