Stem cells

Whats your thoughts on stem cells? pls dont flame its merely a political and spiritual topic.

In my own opinion, stem cells should be widely researched and used because they are going to be the future for many people. Various diseases or body defects such as being disabled or having neuromuscular tribulations plague the world today and there are no cures since nerves cells cannot or rarely go through mitosis (which is the division of cells which is a form of asexual reproduction). Many people are making this into a large controversy because of using a embryo of a child, it is immoral to destroy a child but if it were to be aborted, maybe its body could have been used to help people who are full alive and are struggling with every breath they breath.

Most people don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t have a vicious disease that haunts them every moment for the fear of dying or having their illness become more intensified. Humans have the capability for knowledge and the search for new knowledge. We have the resources to overcome any obstacle that impedes our quest for a longer lifetime or a proper life.

Since I am more about evolution then religion; my opinions are merely logically and scientifically based. Other people have their own opinions and I respect them.

But I will not respect anyone that flames this topic and tells me I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m stupid or I have no say or anything like that since this is merely opinionated.

i feel that there should be no restriction on stem cells there are ways to aquire them with out endangering or killing life. my best friend has a desiese called crystric fibroses and his lifespan is about 30 years then my aunt has mostris fiberosis and she has about 20 more years to live. stem cell rechearch will pass the only question is when.

Yeah I think it is good to a certain extent...just to help diseases though. I don't think that it is right at all to use stem cells from other life to try cloning....That is completely messed up and utterly wrong,

but the technology exists to take stem cells without killing life. when a femail is pregent the umbilicle cord or somthing contains stem cells and also i heard somewere that scientists can starv cells or somthing to make them regress to an earler stage or somthing like that making even skin cells stem cells. please dont say killing cells is killing life those cells would die ethor way most cells have a life span of about 1 month anyways.

I highly agree with this, it can save thousands if not millions of lives in only a few short years if it where to work they way it should.

I not that educated on this topic but if you HAVE to kill and embryo to do it i think its somewhat wrong, and they should find other means of doing it, (like you said the umbilical cord) or if the female WANTS and abortion and the people who do the research get the permission they can use it.

yea the umbilical chord does work, the only problem is that it only works for the people whose umbilical chord it came from. Most elderly people or teenagers have their own umbilical chord, hospitals are just starting to make a bank for umbilical chords for a small fee so if the patient needed new stem cells they can use their own stem cells.

scientists are making a new method of stem cells which come from mice, only problem is that the body might reject the cells and it needs to have a better source of growth, like the stem cells are grown on mice skin cells to grow off of. scientists are still researching and testing this method, but the stem cells from an embryo or a umbilical chord are more effective and have less of a chance of becoming rejected by the patients body.

It should be allowed, the umbilical cord does not have a brain and a heart, it does not grow once it is cut off, and stem cells from them should be used. But from the embryo.. who knows, depends what sort of a stance you're on in the abortion debate. This is just a religious debaco

i think you can get stem cells from abortions also and i dont understand why people are againts them because we have over 6billion people on this planet it can not support that many more.

thats so true, we need to stop making babies! :D abortion i think is fine at the cell stage(or early stage watever), but not when its like 7+months old

i just think that all science should go hrough to a certain extent. I mean, humans only use 15%(guess) of there brain, thats 85% thats doing nothing. if we could unlock that we could do anything.

Thats acctually an urban legend.

Abortions aren't the solution, Soylent green is.

the rest of us happily use all of our brains.

then why do you forget? why does everyone not see a picture and be able to paint it? That talks about USING 100% of your brain, nothing about how well we use that 100%, kinda like how everyone can draw a car, just some do it perfectly and others look like there drawing a cardboard box.

that 'physical make things float in air' stuff ain't true, not at all.

If you believe everyting you read, don't read

so as that says, we DO use 100% of our brain, just like 10% of each part.

Thats acutally a safety mechanism. There have been cases of extreame photographic memory where people have trouble forgeting anything. By the end of their lives they get all muddled, confused, and generally insane.

Get insane when there older, i'm more on about short-term memory, like how you forget what you said/saw a minute ago.

Here's some background info on embryonic stem cells:

Stem cells are derived from eggs from a donor, who is informed and consents to do such a thing. Scientists fertilize and grow the eggs in-vitro, meaning that they grow it in a lab (petri dish). Within a few days, the fertilized egg grows into a blastocyst, meaning "a ball of cells". The stem cells come from blastocysts. (I've never worked with stem cells, so I don't know how the process works)

We all have stem cells in our body, which are used to create new cells in your body (we have brain stem cells too!). These stem cells are found in our organs and tissues, and used by the body to repair itself. Though research has been done on it, there is still much work to be done on the subject. :)

What differentiates embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells is the fact that the embryonic ones are pluripotent-- they seem to have the potential to become ANY TYPE of cell. Adult stem cells (most of them) are unipotent-- they are "programmed" to become one type of cell, and nothing else.

Scientists have not fully figured out how these adult stem cells fully work. There's still a lot of research that needs to be done on them.

-----------------------------

I am studying towards a biotechnology major, and I hope the restrictions on embryonic stem cells are lifted real soon. Other countries are already working with these cells, and we are quickly falling behind.. I see the potential of these stem cells and I hope I can one day work with them-- I just hope that day comes.

Myth: Humans use only 10% or 1% of their brain. Though the brain still holds mysteries that are being studied, every part of the brain is known to have a function. A possible origin of this myth is the fact that only about 10% of the neurons in the brain are firing at any given time. However, if all of your neurons began firing at once, you would not become smarter, but instead suffer an epileptic seizure. In fact studies have shown that the brains of more intelligent people are less active than the brains of less intelligent people, when working on the same problems.

I never said it was a perfect mechanism, those events probably stuck out more during the time of happening, thus, they got recorded; more so than others.

ok i think the brain works this way its a huge glob of cells that are connected to each other. the more connections the smarter you are. if you got no connections your dead. i think the 10% ethor comes from the number of connections they have or 90% is used controling your body or maby sections of your brain sleep at difrent times (somthings got to control your heart and lungs when you are busy dreaming about sheep). but i dont know much about the body we skipped that section in life science last year  (i am only intrested in 3 things about life and we skipped 2 of them(how a cell works, how cells work together, and how life began))

I sincerely hope that one day stem cell research can be carried out, it's potential to save lives is simply huge, and at the moment it is the most promising way to cure things like cancer and other diseases.

A lot of people are against stem cell research because, for one, it's like playing God. Needless to say, agnostics and other religions could care less about this reason. If this is playing God, then what do you call genetic engineering? Next, one method involves "killing" an unborn fetus. The question goes, when is a fetus considered a human that you're killing?

Ironically, the same people that are sending hundreds of thousands of troops to war are the ones who are against stem cell research, because it kills a fetus.

The fact that they don't like the concept means that research on the subject is illegal, and even if someone in power along the line chooses to allow it, then we're starting over almost. I think it's one of those breakthrough technologies that will save numerous lives and be important to the future of humanity.

If people thought about it it would extend billions maby trillions of lives for 1000s of years and it will do in the medical world what the atomic bomb did to milatary and science. however the nuke was also the first time that man could kill almost every life form on the surface of the planet including us. People fear that 1 they are playing God as Peter stated and 2 we may end up killing everyone by exsploiting some genetic weakness in are DNA.

I just want to say that the reason most people don't like stem cell research is that because they think exactly that, we are playing god. But isn't that very very ignorant of them? Saying that we shouldnt play god. They are forcing their beliefs upon the people who want to better the world, and is that really okay? I say no, and they should stay out of other peoples buisness as long as its not hurting anyone (in fact its quite the opposite) and they can let their child die of the many horrible diseases that could be cured by stem cells.

If you think that "killing" a fetus is horrible, think of it like this: They were never meant to be alive and already have in mind to use this for the greater good.

so when u say we are playing god, that is saying that there should be no hospitals, clinics, doctors, prescription drugs. because all of those are the same as playing god because you are preventing someones death of decline in life. Playing god would more be shown as cloneing or genetically enhancing a fetus in the womb by making them stronger or more immune to diseases. If we are allowed to do all these things such as advancing the way of human life, i dont see how god has anything to do with it, since he never restricted it. yes we kill some fetus's in the process but in the end, we gain soo much more, such as a loved one being able to see their grandchildren or having another day to look forward to.
