Hasn't the internet been threatened to be taken over by big business since...well it's creation?

Has it yet?

How do you get on the internet if you don't go through one of those businesses?

Well I meant on the scale of this sort of "censorship".

This is different, this is governments controlling it. Under it you are guilty until proven innocent. Governments can use it to have websites they don't like shut down, corporations can have consumers disconnected for as little as 3 song downloads.

Besides, businesses just want to charge you more for accessing certain websites each month.

IMO the government shouldn't even care what people do on the internet these days. Why watch us here in the first place, when those officials have much better things that they should be taken care of?

And at least in China, they don't care about piracy.

Oh and a (good) solution for blocking: proxy/VPN servers.

It slows us down and is a pain to do.

Governments care what we do because they're afraid of us.

Exactly. A free internet means rapid dissemination of information, information sheds light on ignorance, and the abolition of ignorance forces people to see the world around them for what it is. The Regime can't risk that; it's subtle, but it's started: look at piracy-enforcement, massive government "shadow-proxies" and corporate spying.

"Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security."

Support transparency... and by extension, freedom and democracy.

What annoys me most is the fact that there is such an image. Why the hell can't they just write in freaking paragraphs. I won't even bother to read, and I'm not really worried about this thing since I doubt any politician would allow this without losing a lot of approval rating.

What happens when they put it under the guise that totalitarian regimes use to control the people, while the people voluntarily bend over the get [bleep]ed over?

Children.

Adolf Hitler

“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as government is perceived as working for the benefit of children, the people happily will endure almost any curtailment of liberty.”

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini

“Teachers and professors, you must be alert to watch your own colleagues to see if some of them are trying to teach deviating thoughts during their lessons to the children of our Islamic nation so that they can be stopped”

Lenin

"Destroy the family, you destroy the country….Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted….ideological talk and phrase mongering about political liberties should be disposed with; all that is just mere chatter and phrase mongering. We should get away from those phrases.”

Even here in Australia, one politician is using children to force a mandatory censorship of the internet, and they're trying to bring it in next year.

Stephen Conroy

“It is important that all Australians, particularly young children, are protected from this material….The Government believes that parents want assistance to reduce the risk of children being exposed to such material.”

“Online safety is critical for children to enjoy positive internet experiences, and to protect themselves from danger.”
